  • The Scene
At 220 miles from Boston, Saddleback is a hike--but it's worth the effort. Besides the skiing, this is an exceptionally friendly place, with a cozy lounge and a few other unpretentious and happy joints in Rangeley.

    The Slopes
Looking west from the 4,000-foot summit, you can see Mount Washington and the Presidentials. Looking down, there's a view of what may be the most handsome collection of expert trails in New England. There are glades, steeps, even a broad avenue called Gunslinger, all leading to enjoyable intermediate trails. What's best are the extremely short lines. You could spend less time in the car and more time in lift lines, or more time in the car, followed by no lift lines.
