The Sacramento Poetry Center is an amazing resource. The variety and regularity of offered programs ensure that every type of poet can find what they are looking for. SPC creates a unique space in which both accomplished, refined poets, and younger, inexperienced writers can feel comfortable sharing a stage. If you are a poet, or even just a poetry lover, and you live anywhere near Sacramento, you should definitely take advantage of the SPC. Pros: Variety more

Feeds the Soul! 9/25/2002

The range and diversity of featured poets provides "something for everyone." Sometimes the readings are funny, sometimes serious, often healing. An "open reading" follows the featured poet. Attendees have the opportunity to try one or two of their own poems before a live audience. The Sacramento Poetry Center provides programs that bring interesting people together. The work is usually entertaining, and often feeds the soul. Pros: Usually free, easy parking, interesting people more

  • The Venue
Ask the average Joe or Jane on the street, and they're likely to say they've never heard of the Sacramento Poetry Center--even though the organization has been around for more than 20 years. One of the city's better-kept secrets, the center is nevertheless a boon for area poets and poetry fans.

    The Events
Among the center's regular events is a weekly Monday night reading series, which begins at 8pm and features a scheduled poet followed by an open mike session. The center also hosts less frequent "special" readings, which in the past have boasted luminaries Gary Snyder, Maya Angelou and Galway Kinnell. An annual writers' conference at the center offers workshops, discussions, and--yep, you guessed it--more readings.
