The Rock is CLOSED 11/18/2010

If you live in the area, you probably know this already. If not, and you are coming into town and looking for the PBR-Silo Metal Crowd kind of joint, don't head to The Rock. It is closed as of the summer of 2010. Too bad, it was a fun place. RIP, The Rock Nightclub. If you are looking for another Metal bar, check out Station 4 in St. Paul or Roberts Bar on Highway 10. more

Excellent sound, great staff, and cheap drinks 6/10/2010

The ROCK is a great venue, for big bands wanting to do a more personal show to the new bands just starting out. The sound system and engineers that run it, know what there doing and sounds excellent. The staff from the bartenders to security are nice down to earth people. Drinks are the cheapest in the area, concerts most nights of the week and a killer happy hour to unwind after work, Location is excellent minutes from hwy 36 and seconds from 694. Pros: smoking patio, accessibility from other cities more

Best Sounding Venue In The Area 6/9/2010

I love going to the rock for a show. The people that slam this place for the staff being asses probably were being asses themselves. they've always been very nice and courteous either when i call to buy tickets or get a beer or anything! i can agree that sometimes it's slow getting a drink at the bar but it's because it's probably slammed and a huge show that night. they could maybe use another bar or maybe more beer tubs but overall it's the BEST place for shows in the cities. Pros: Great Sound, Nice Staff, Better than Descent Food Cons: Slow Beer Service more

Greatest Concerts Around 6/9/2010

I have been to The Rock for many concerts with my friends. We always have a great time, and would recommend to anyone! The staff has always been very friendly. Pros: Great music, staff, and shows more

Awesome bands! 6/9/2010

Not only does the Rock Nightclub feature great bands almost every night of the week! They also have a great sound system to ensure the bands you see sound the best! I've even got to see some of my favorite bands there. The Rock Nightclub brings in everyone from Buckcherry to Dillinger Escape Plan. You are sure to have a good experience if you love to see live bands a have a few drinks! Check out the calendar to see who is coming! Pros: Good bands! more

best nightclub around 5/11/2010

I love going out to the rock nightclub. The staff there is really friendly and it's a nice environment to hang out in. I find their drinks priced fairly and quite frankly, they're really good. They have fun events there like the 93x get trashed tuesdays for those who would like to hang out and listen to some rock, they have karaoke on sundays, and live performances all the time. This is one of the few bars where you can have fun. But if you DO want over priced drinks, crap for music, and skanky ladies walking around, head somewhere else. Pros: friendly staff, great music, heaters on outdoor patio, good more

Overrated and Mean staff 1/19/2010

This place is a dump, the drinks are incredibly overpriced and mixed weak. The staff are complete dicks who can't wait to kick people out. It seems they have the attitude that because most mainstream acts play there, they will never lose business and can treat their customers like crap knowing they'll be back for the next show. By the way, can you tell which reviews were written by the owner? more

RUDE staff! 7/9/2009

I saw a great band there on Tuesday night however the staff, okay the short blonde bartender was such a snot! In this economy rude staff is unacceptable and i can't believe someone who treats patrons the way she treated my large group is allowed to even work there. She was condescending and I never saw her smile once. Oh, and that place definately smells! Pros: bands Cons: staff, smell, crowd more

Not a fun place 10/12/2008

Agree that the place is a dive. Smells bad even though smoking doesn't take place anymore. The service everytime I have ever been there was slow and unfriendly. Wouldn't eat there if I were you. Business practices are said to be shady as well....use with caution. Have heard some good sounds there, but for the most part the club struggles to deliver a professional atmosphere for musicians. Cons: poor service, smelly atmosphere, spendy drinks more

Great Rock Club 7/12/2008

Love it! Medium size venue with great parking, nice outdoor patio, good seating & dance floor, nice stage, good sound system, great accomodations for musician load-in, good bar service, great American food, accomplished local and national acts, and a great place to be yourself (wear whatever you want...tees, jeans, hats, tats, metal). Great local club for music lovers of rock and metal. If you want to hang out with disco drunks and crackheads singing Tie a Yellow Ribbon Around the Old Oak Tree, or YMCA, and throwing up on the sidewalk, then go to the discos in Uptown or Downtown. By the way, how hard is it to play prerecorded music over a sound system? Give this live venue some credit nay-sayers. Pros: Parking, patio, good seating, standing room more

Avoid at all costs worst major rock bar in Minneapolis 7/10/2008

This club is horrible, over priced drinks that you have to wait 20 minutes to get (unless your best friends with the bartenders they will ignore you even if your on fire), rude door men, stupid policies (they had a 24 MANDATORY Coat check in the winter, or you had to leave your coat in the car and pay to get in AGAIN) Sound is generally horrible, way too much highs from the deaf sound guy and booming muffled bass that blurred out everything else. Not just one time but Every time Ive been to this club, there are actually bands both national and local who now avoid this club even though its got one of the biggest stages in town. They dont know what they want to be but they do know they want as much of your money as possible Pros: has a nice parking lot, do yourself a favor stay there Cons: everything else more

Avoid this venue 4/18/2008

The Rock Nightclub may offer a great variety of music but they now allow smoking throughout the entire indoor portion of the club, even though the smoking ban is in place, making it hard to breathe without inhaling a cloud of smoke. Also the sound quality is horrible. Every concert I've attended has been muffled, too loud, and not mixed well at all. I've even heard the performers complain of the horrible sound quality themselves. The drinks are expensive, the place is dirty and the people are obnoxious. Every time I go there, I see drunks yelling at the bartenders, people barely able to walk, and sometimes women wearing little to no clothing. All in all, I am not a fan of this venue at all. Pros: Variety of music Cons: Bad sound quality, smoking allowed more

THis place smells like a plugged urinal 2/19/2008

This is the nastiest smelling bar I have ever been in. The stench clings to your clothes when you go home. I hear the bar is now doing an end-run around the state smoking ban. That's sure to make things smell better in this dive. NOT! Cons: Place smells terrible! more

Great Local Music Venue 1/18/2008

The Rock is one million times better since the smoking ban went into effect! They have a great little outdoor patio for the smokers (with heat lamps for those winter months). Inside is huge with a great sound system for the local or bigger name music acts. The strip mall location is enough to throw a person off, but it really is a great place. It's a bit of a drive if you are coming from Minneapolis, but it's wonderful for those that live out in the 'burbs. If you like rock music, check out their calendar of events and make it a point to check out some local music!! Pros: good sound, friendly staff Cons: far out from the city more

Great sound system, great live bands, great atmosphere, great drinks, all at the end of a strip mall. 6/6/2007

We performed at the Rock in Maplewood and just love this place. The staff is really nice and the drinks are great. This place is very roomy for a "strip mall venue". The sound system is awesome. It's clear, big, and loud. Reminds me of First Ave, or better. Some big acts have graced that stage and it was an honor to perform there. If you haven't been to the Rock, I suggest going out to a few shows there, you'll be hooked on this place. Smoking is allowed here, so if you don't like a smokey venue be warned, the couple of times we visited the Rock the smoke haze was pretty intense. Other than that, it's great: billiards, video games, great drinks, great live music on a stellar stage and system....this is THE place to be. Pros: Great sound system, great live music, nice bathrooms, really good drinks, all around great atmosphere Cons: Smokey more

Nice Club! 4/28/2006

Great Club, Nice Crowd, and great staff! Overall this would be a club I would recommend to all to check out! more

  • In Short
From the outside, few bars are more nondescript than the Rock: It almost presents a modern version of speakeasy secrecy. But the inside offers a pleasant surprise: A dark, expansive room offering good sound and sightliness for taking in the band. Those in attendance are there to hear the music, which can vary in style from the country of Chase Roberts to circa-'80s hair bands like Ratt and Loverboy.
