Incredible Red Rocks 4/24/2006

Breathtaking, humbling, awe-inspiring wilderness within minutes of civilization.. . one of the world's most glorious rock-climbing and rappelling sites. Gets hot in the summer... so go equipped with water and hiking maps from the loop.. . parking is limited Pros: Gorgeous Cons: ARE in the wilderness more

In Red Rock Canyon, Hike the Pine Creek Trail 8/5/2005

Located about 13 miles around the scenic loop, Pine Creek is totally unexpected. An easy hike for at least a mile (retrace steps to get back). In no time you're in a Ponderosa Pine forest with a creek paralleling your path. Fit hikers can choose either the South Fork or Fern Creek past the one mile fork in the trail. You can rock scramble or, if you're lucky, continue on up either canyon on unmarked trails. Fern Creek Canyon is complete with ferns, flowing creek and waterfalls- if you're persistent. Pros: Unexpected beauty, free, good fitness outing Cons: small parking lot, hot in summer months, up-and-back trail more

Great Hiking 8/8/2002

Awesome for hiking in the spring, winter and fall. If you decide to hike during the summer months, take extra, extra water and do it during the early hours of the morning or late in the afternoon. It also makes for a great sceninc drive. more

Nature without slots 8/7/2002

A great drive with a variety of hikes for different skill levels. All within a few minutes of the Strip. more

Deceptive at first 7/25/2002

Red Rock Canyon is underappreciated by the locals, deceptive at first, and surprisingly gorgeous. Even though I commute through Red Rock twice daily I am astounded every time by the size, colors, space and infinite variety of Red Rock. The monolithic cliffs look close enough to touch until you wend your way around the scenic drive or try to hike to their bases. Dawn and dusk bring amazing clarity and variety to the cliffs, while snow turns it into fairyland. You cannot visit too many times. Pros: Spectacular, Accessible Cons: Too many bike riders, Needs bike trails more
