I love this place. It's smack-dab in the middle of an area that has always drawn me because of its proximity to one of the oldest African-American communities in the state, and because of the area's insistence on persevering in spite of metro Washington's seeming attraction to cookie-cutter suburbs and glitzy downtown areas. The Publick Theater is sort of a beacon of hope in the middle of an area that has seen better times, but is flush with historic older homes and people who have lived there for generations. The venue serves its community of die hard residents who have lived here for generations upon generations, and newcomers drawn to its real feel. The theater offers a diverse array, from African-American dance theater to activities and features for children, and the prices are moderate. The space itself is modern, very nice and designed so that every seat in the house is a good one. Definitely worth a visit. Parking is modest, but on-street parking seems to be widely available. You'll have to drive -- there is no Metro nearby.
