Don't Go There 5/25/2010

I was visiting a girlfriend in the Bay Area and wanted to use my spafinder gift certificate that was given to me for mother's day. So I called spafinder and they recommended a spa near my girlfriend's home. We drove tto Primrose Country Day Spa because they had a website that made them look like they offered a variety of professional facials and massages. Also it would be a nice ride along the pacific coast on our way there. When we got there my girlfriend said" Is that the house?". I got out first and walked up the house. The landscape wasn't the best with broken cement on the walkway, but I tried to look past that. When I got to the door, I had to knock and a woman answer the door and look surprised. I did not make an appointment, but I usually could walk into a spa even in Las Vegas hotel and have one the same day. I figured if they were as great as the website they would be busy and no problem. The lady looked like she just go out of bed. It was 1100am on Tuesday afternoon. I walked in after telling her what I was there for. There was one guy who was standing on the porch earlier and now sitting on the couch. The furniture was dingy. The place had a smell. There was no list of services. It looked like she lived in there. I asked her if she did the massages and she said she and someone else. I got the impression she had to call someone in. I asked her to let me see where she did the massages. She opened this door off from the entrance, she said " I did not clean up from the last client". The room was dark and dingy. The sheets were in disarray and pillows dirty. I had seen enough. I said," No thanks". I left and was glad I did not call first and make a appointment. But I think it was no way she could have made that place look appealing without a major renovation. Stay away from this place. I would not take my door or cat there for a bath. Barbara Kansas City more

Not Your "spa experience" 2/10/2009

I had a massage here a few months ago and I was not impressed to say the least. My massage therapist did not communicate much with me about what type of pressure I would like, did not inquire about any health issues or injuries I might have. I had to bring them up. The massage was alright/decent. The whole experience was just not what I would expect as a place to go relax and feel like I was pampering myself. more

Some good, some bad 12/28/2008

I've had massages and facials here a couple of times. Once, they were having construction done so the owner had to step out of the facial room several times to interact with workmen and the noise was really inappropriate for a spa session. They should have offered me another appt time when it was more quiet or money off due to the noise. Like the other reviewer, the owner stepped in and out and could have been a bit more warm. I suspect she was stressed due to the workmen. I've also had a massage and facial there by staff other than the owner and those were awesome. more

I would not return 7/7/2007

I had the chance to visit this spa recently. I was very unhappy about several aspects. Lunch was included, but they had no menus, list of restaurants or anything. I was asked what I wanted from a local restaurant (worded that way). I didn't know any restaurants so I was asked "do you like chicken? We have a chicken thing". I was invited into a treatment room and then was left there for over 15 minutes while I heard the staff talking about their personal affairs. I felt I was at the doctor's office, wondering if I was forgotten. Normally a staff person asks if you have anything you would like addressed or any health problems. This was not asked at the beginning and I found that strange. The person doing my facial seemed very under-prepared. Often she would open every drawer looking for something and then leave the room to get the item. This happened every 5 - 7 minutes and sometimes she was gone for minutes. She wore heels, so every time I got comfortable, she walked out with her heels clicking and my mind was brought back to the business world again. Most places, when a product needs time to sit, the staff massages arms or something to pass the time. I was left alone, listening to everyone urinate in the bathroom next to the treatment room. I then had a body wrap done and the staff person couldn't remember how to do it or what position she wanted me in. When I asked if she was new, she replied that she has been in business for 20 years and she was the owner of the spa. The body wrap gel product was so hot it burned me. I immediately reacted to it and she assured me that it wasn't hot. When she stuck her finger in it to test, she agreed it was too hot. My massage with a different staff member was awesome and I loved it. That person asked about trouble areas and health issues, like normal at every other spa I've been to. Then the owner saw me again for the pedicure and offered me tea. She didn't know what teas she had or how to make it and had to ask me. Then when I went to pay, she overcharged me. There are no prices anywhere in the establishment, so I was going off memory from the website. I thought I just had it wrong and didn't say anything, but I checked online when I got home. My gift certificate should have covered the cost and I ended up paying additional with all the cash I had on hand. The only reason I gave Primrose Country Day Spa 2 stars is because I did get everything expected and the other staff member was awesome. more
