Colorado Golf in the most inspiring atmosphere possible 5/19/2012

If you want to find this course on Google Maps, the physical location of Pole Creek Golf Course is 6827 County Road 51, Tabernash, CO 80478. And if Tabernash has you scratching your head saying “uh?” you might be more familiar with the landmark of Winter Park Resort, located 11 miles away and home to some of the best skiing and snowboarding in Colorado. I think some of the best golf in Colorado is found at Pole Creek. The first 9 holes – The Meadow – originally opened in 1983. The 9 holes of The Ranch opened in 1985 which also saw the course named as “Best new public course in North America” by Golf Digest. A further 9 holes – The Ridge – were added in 1999, ensuring that, at an elevation of 8,600 feet, Pole Creek is one of the highest 27 hole courses is the country. Even though the altitude will help you hit your ball 15% further, at 7,173 yards from the blue tees (Ranch/Ridge combination), it’s a long course. The white tees are recommended for guys playing off a handicap of 10 or higher and you’ll probably enjoy the experience more as a result. While I keep being told to stop “thinking” too much about my game, you do need to think your way round Pole Creek. There’s a different challenge with almost every shot. The tee box is almost the only time you’ll get a flat lie, the fairways demand accuracy, and the greens are relatively small. Up and downs are tough, the bunkers are deep, and the greens tough to read (although remember they tend to slop towards the creek and/or towards the Continental Divide). Talking of the Divide, this range provides a magnificent backdrop and compels you to look around and take in the beauty of the valley. Drinks carts are on hand to help you relax even more if you’re that way inclined! And friendly faces are everywhere – from the pro-shop, to the restaurant, to the grounds crew – they’re all there to help you have a great experience. Twilight golf is $48, peak season $99. This is a true test of golf in the most inspiring atmosphere possible. more
