I don’t like the month of January in Portland. My pants are invariably one size too small from overindulging during the holidays, the clouds loom heavy overhead, and the rain…my god, the rain. What’s a girl to do?
One way to burn calories and fight off the winter blues is to head to Mt. Hood for a day of cross-country skiing or snow shoeing. If you haven’t invested in the equipment or just want to try the sport out, Otto’s is a great place to rent for the day. The shop is tiny, and sometimes there’s a line out the door, but the staff is efficient and the wait is rarely very long. You can usually avoid lines all together if you show up before 9am and drop off your rentals before 3pm.
If you tell them your skill level they can suggest trails or shoeing areas you might enjoy. They also have a selection of outerwear, sunglasses and such, in the event that you need anything for your outdoor adventure. Cost for one-day rental: cross-country skis, boots, poles ($15); snowshoes ($12).
Otto's, 38716 Pioneer Blvd, Sandy. (503) 668-5947.
