La disappointment at La Mansion 11/27/2005

We were very disappointed in our stay at La Mansion del Rio. The front desk and concierge staff are less than helpful, often misinformed, and in one instantance incredibly rude. The poolside rooms are very noisy. Our ""deluxe guestroom"" had burned out lightbulbs, a broken thermostat, and very little hot water available in the mornings. This is supposed to be an upscale hotel in a high-end tourist area, but we've had nicer stays at Holiday Inns. Pros: Nice location, Good restaurant, Helpful valets Cons: Poor room conditions, Rude concierge, Noisy more

Tough Critic 8/11/2005

If you can afford it, Las Carnarias is the perfect reprieve from the jammed Riverwalk. Let your servers indulge you, they are very good at it. Their fresh breads are excellent and all our meals were equally as good. A beautiful restaurant with beautiful service. Pros: Food, Ambience, Service more

Great Hotel 7/2/2005

I stayed here with my wife in July 05. We got lucky with an upgrade and were treated like royalty. The room was clean, modern, and spacious. The hotel is situated right in the middle of the River Walk. Their restaurant is great too - the eggs benedict and smoked salmon hit the spot for breakfast. Pros: Clean, Convenient, Fancy Cons: Expensive, Pool side is loud more

Wonderful experience! 6/20/2005

We drove to Las Canarias from Austin to experience a romantic meal on the River Walk. We were so pleased with our experience. The fact that the restuarant was linked to a hotel was of slight concern but the ambience was that of a (stand alone) fine dining restuarant with pleasant guitar music and a romantic feel. The service was more than outstanding. The matre de took special interest in making sure that he exceeded my expectations when a small comment about seating arrangement was brought to his attention by the hostess. Cannot say enough good things about Las Canarias. It lived up to all of what we hoped for in our fine dining on the River Walk. Pros: Romantic Ambience, Great Food, Fabulous service more

Simply Perfect 11/16/2004

My husband and I drove in from Austin for a romantic dinner to celebrate our 1 year anniversary. We were greeted with a surprise glass of champagne, the best service we have experienced together ANYWHERE, and food that was to-die-for! Our waiters, Rick & Shawn, couldn't have made our visit any better. If you are hoping for a memorable evening, you can't miss with this restaurant!!! Pros: knowledable staff, delicious food, perfect location more

too expensive 4/13/2004

While it looks beautiful from the outside, I found this establishment VERY average - the rooms are small, if you move anything in the small fridge they try and charge you for it and it is much too expensive for the quality of the room. Don't pay extra for the river view - there is regular construction going on and you may pay for a view of the mud. more

Wow! 1/20/2004

Beautiful and comfortable place to stay. Staff is excellent and makes you feel at home. I'd never stay anywhere else again in San Antonio! more

My Favorite Texas Restaurant 5/15/2003

I'd never heard of Las Canarias the first time we visited, but it's been very dear to my heart and taste buds since. The ambience is beautiful, the service is always friendly and knowledgeable and the food is incredible. There is wonderful creativity in the kitchen and they tickle the imagination with menu items like sweet onion caramel on desserts and white truffel macaroni and lobster sorbet. I always look forward to a trip back to Las Canarias. Pros: Location, Adequate Parking, Great Bar Cons: Reservations Needed more

Fabulous Spot! 11/17/2002

Just got back from a weekend stay at La Mansion, and it was wonderful. First class service and amenities, coupled with the best location on the Riverwalk! If you can, book early and request a room on the Riverwalk on the 2nd floor - they have balconies with incredible views. I would highly recommend this hotel. Pros: spa tubs, location, decor Cons: often overbooked more

The Coolest 10/18/2002

Before we visited La Mansion I checked this site for the reviews and became somewhat concerned over the negative ratings. Those were either plants or snobs. This hotel is dripping with ambiance, comfort and casual elegance. It's not snooty, but it is first class, and I have seen first class at the best resort towns in the States. Viva La Mansion and thanks for the memories. more

Great Foods and Excellent Service 8/6/2002

Las Canarias is the best restaurant in town value for money and rivals the top restaurants that I have dine at through-out the world when it comes to food quality and service. Fresh, creative high quality food and excellent, attentive and friendly service. Whether for lunch, Dinner or their incredible brunch I recommend it highly. more

Wow 8/6/2002

The Sunday brunch is worthy of all the praise it receives. The excellent and expansive assortment of food is delightful to eat and the experience was fun as well. 4 stars and two thumbs up. more

Most romatic restaurant on the Riverwalk 8/6/2002

I have been dining in Las Canarias for years and can quite simply say that the food is stupendious! If you haven't experienced their Sunday Brunch, your life just isn't complete! My entire family loves Las Canarias! Simply the best in San Antonio!!! more

Hidden Riverwalk treasure 7/24/2002

Hidden inside La Mansion Hotel is a treasure of culinary treats called Las Canarias. Sunday brunch is the best in town complete with champagne, omelettes made to order, pastries, salmon in multiple varieties, bread pudding to die for, fruits, salads, shrimp, and regular breakfast items done with excellent gourmet taste. The dining room is elegant but simple. THe outdoor dininig is romantic and overlooks the Riverwalk above the walkway level so passer-bys are not eyeballing the food or the way you are eating! Excellent attentive service which is not overwhelming or pushy. Competitive prices with other hotel oriented breakfast buffets. I've never ordered off the menu although I've heard their breakfast menu items are equally to die for! Well worth it, but make reservations at least a day ahead of time. more

Quality Stay 6/23/2002

My wife and I stayed in early June for our 5th anniversary. The hotel is very, very nice but it is very, very old. You can smell the age in the unventilated hallways, not a bad smell, but you can smell the years. The room was very nice, big and spotless, with a view of the wonderful courtyard. Service was second to none, the staff responds instantly to any requests. Watch out for the mini bar, it has ""sensors"", and if any item is moved, you are auto charged for it. You have to ask for a refund if you did not consume the item, even if you returned it immediately. Overall, nice stay, but if you don't like historic buildings, stay away. Parking is $21.95 per day for guests. Riverwalk location is the best in town. Pros: Location, Service, Room Size Cons: Electric mini bar, No vents in hallways, Daily parking charge more

  • Perched on the celebrated River Walk, this luxurious getaway in San Antonio, TX features refined restaurants and a heated courtyard pool with bar. Omni La Mansión del Rio RiverWalk is set in a Spanish colonial building across the street from the Majestic Theatre. Refined rooms and suites boast marble bathrooms, exposed brick walls, and/or beamed ceilings. Guests also enjoy a kids program and access to an elegant spa next door at the neighboring Mokara Hotel.

Editorial
  • The Scene
This historic building began as a private school in 1854. Eventually, it evolved into St. Mary's University's law school. In 1966 the blackboards were traded in for beds, and the property became one of the most elegant hotels along the Riverwalk. Its refined atmosphere is a welcome respite from the riverside bustle.

    The Details
Today visitors are greeted by a lobby filled with Spanish and Mexican antiques. Although the building's collegiate days are over, they are recalled in El Colegio, an intimate piano bar that was once the university library. Like the public areas, guest rooms and suites echo the Spanish history of the area. Many have beamed ceilings and graceful arches, as well as private balconies overlooking the River Walk.
