The BEST NY style Pizza on the West Coast! 12/1/2009

As a native New Yorker living out here for 10 + years, we got tired of ""NY Pizza"" claims from the other pizza joints in Portland. So we kind of gave up and just made our own, which still wasn't close since we don't have a proper pizza oven. Then a friend suggested New York, New York on Barbur. We live about 3 minutes from here. I will never eat another pizza in Portland other than the great pizza that owner Pat and his lovely daughter Deena serve. This is the real deal. Authentic NY-style pizza needs to flop, drip with a bit of grease and have a crispy crust (but not crunchy) - they get is right here. I've also eaten ""NY Style"" Pizza in San Francisco, LA and Seattle - and nothing comes close to the mouth-watering pizza here! Thank you for allowing me a little piece of NY here in Portland! I've already put the word out to my NY network here in Portland! Pros: Real NY Pizza - other 'imitators' should just give up! more

Very good pizza, homey joint, but not gourmet 10/11/2009

I haven't found much NY style pizza in Portland and there's no doubt this place is good - the crust has a nice crispness and the standard ingredients are available. The restaurant itself is homey but don't expect gourmet service or food here - good solid food is what you'll get. Definitely not the best restaurant nor the best pizza in Portland but worth a try if you're in the neighborhood and like this kind of place. Pros: Good NY style pizza w/ crispy crust Cons: Good, but not great more

Authentic NYC Style and perhaps THE BEST Pizza in Portland 4/27/2009

I can overlook that Pat will not allow garlic salt into his restaurant (garlic salt... it's a NY'r thing) because this is the kind of pizza I remember getting as a kid growing up in Rockaway Beach, Queens. When you fold the pizza in half the bottom crust cracks just a little bit (the way it is supposed to). If you don't fold the pizza the cheese slides right off the pizza, perfect! \r \r I also got a italian sausage sub to take to work... it never made it! I started to nibble on it just a little and slammed the whole thing on the spot, it was so good!\r \r This is Italian food with all of the character and tastes of NYC. I will be found here FREQUENTLY. Pros: Hands Down the Best NYC style pizza in PDX- no question! Cons: I wish the place were a bit bigger more

Hands Down Best Italian Restaurant in Portland 2/24/2009

Absolutely the best Italian restaurant in all of Portland! I would go on and on, but all I have to say is that we ordered their food for our wedding - and everyone raved! Oh, and by the way, the LARGEST pizzas in Portland...Dine in and meet the ever-charming owner and chef Pat, who is from NY and makes the food from scratch. Pros: Service, food from scratch, best Italian in town, ambience Cons: Parking, bad view of Barbur Blvd. more

Best Pizza in Portland 11/20/2008

This is the best pizza in Portland, for sure. Pat Pasquale is there and he's just amazing with his sauces. The pizza is the best. The cheese is done at the same time the crust is. That's what you don't get in other places. It's so great and you'll just love the atmosphere. It's like you are in New York! more

Not to be rude to the other reviewers, but... 10/29/2008

...a friend of mine from NYC says this is the most authentic New York Italian deli in Portland. Authenticity aside, it's absolutely excellent, and the service is amusing and professional. I think the other reviewers (dickweeds) were looking for a Round Table experience. Don't listen to anything they said; they're clueless. more

go elsewhere 9/20/2008

I was hoping this place would be good but the pizza tasted like frozen pizza from Costco and the olive cheese bread did not taste like anything original or gourmet. It tasted like a regular sub bread with cheap mozzarella cheese and canned olives. My sub was ok but nothing spectacular. I prefer the better and more unique restaurants around town that serve quality food. And I thought smoking was reserved for after 10pm??? more

Not worth the money 9/11/2008

We ordered a dinner delivery from New York New York, and we were sadly unimpressed. The food was mostly mediocre, except for the overly salty minestrone, but what we received for our money was definitely substandard. We are not the type who expect to gorge on gigantic portions, but a meal of pasta that does not even come with a salad should be enough to satisfy an adult appetite. Fettucine alfredo with shrimp was just that...about a cup of cooked fettucine noodles with alfredo sauce, and 5 medium sized shrimp perched on top. Not prawns, shrimp. Seriously. 5 shrimp. For $16.50. \r \r Added to that was the fact that the garlic bread was burned and they sent it anyway, and instead of sending the soup in a soup container, they sent it in the same type of flat foil cake pan with cardboard cover that they use for their pasta. There is no way to seal the top, and it was leaking.\r \r Not a restaurant we'll be patronizing again, thanks. If this is how they send out delivery food, we are not interested in visiting them.\r \r more

Authentic!! 8/24/2008

This is the closest thing youll find out here to an authentic New York style place!! Real quality, great service....thanks again guys!! Pros: killer food, fun, great service....mmmmm more

What I've been waiting for... 8/19/2008

Simply put, amazing. AH-MAZING. The base ingredients (mozzarella, marinara sauce) are fantastic and if you've got 'em in your dish, you really can't go wrong. Service is absolutely delightful. Family-run feel with masterful flavors. I could describe everything I've eaten, but you should just stop reading and go. Pros: Service, Food, a nostalgic trip to the boroughs Cons: Um... parking? more

Greatest meal ive had in burlingame, hillsdale or multnomah village!!! 8/14/2008

I walked in to this little italian style cafe on barbur for the first time and was charmed by the eclectic new york theme. it has a combination of romantic old italiano restaurante charm and wacky new york style deli charm. we had a pizza and BAM!! it took me back to the bronx (which is where the owner is from) so good!! we returned for a sit down meal at a table with high back chairs(which provided a little privacy and brought us to a more intimate experience) classic numbers by the ratpack playing all the while. affordable food, but the wine was great, i have a wine shop and i cant get a 50 dollar barbaresco that is so nice. had a chicken dish that was great and filled me up a third of the way through. we had fun and it set the mood for later in the evening......we will be frequenting! Pros: nice father/daughter team take great care while serving delicious, authentic, quality food!! Cons: gets packed quickly and it can be very spirited and boysterous. more

Pat is an italian wizzard from the bronx! 8/14/2008

I am a food person and i have been going to NY NY on barbur next to the burlingame freddys since i moved in to the burlingame neighborhood six years ago. I can tell you that Pat (the owner) is making the closest thing you will find to authentic new york style italian, which is an awesome meal made fresh. yes, at times it will take twenty five minutes, but come on its all hand made when you order it.....relax. the best veal in town and the best prices on veal, but plenty of vegitarian options too. and forget about it, the pizzas are huge-about the size of four pizza hut pizzas and they have the crust down to an art!! my wife craves the chicken parm paired with one of pats special wine selections(for only $5 a glass!!!). i was shocked when i read the negative comments, but i know there is another location in tigard that people confuse. i suggest if you had a bad experience at the barbur location you give it a second chance and say hi to Pat, he is a neighborhood star, a gentleman and a hell of an interesting guy!! Pros: amazing food, Pat is a living cartoon!! they even have a drive up window for to-go's!! Cons: some dishes take twenty minutes to make, not as lively when Pat is not around more

Great pizza and great subs! 2/2/2007

This is not a place you go for atmosphere, but if you want a downhome Italian sub, pasta, or pizza this is the place! The pizza's come in to sizes 18"" and 24"" the 18"" is 18.00 for whatever you want on it. Great value! Try their meatballs, always tasty! I highly reccomend this place. Pros: Great food at a pretty reasonable price. Cons: No atmosphere. more

Fabulous food! 10/23/2006

This place is awesome. REAL New York food with REAL ingredients. Everything is fresh and tastes amazing. I have never had a bad meal here. While the service may be slow (all the food is prepared to order), the staff is very friendly. Both locations are good, though the Tigard location is larger. Wonderful place! Pros: FOOD, prices Cons: Long wait at times more

Tigard location is the best! 7/17/2006

Although we live closer to the Barbur location, Pat the owner spends most of his time at his new place in Tigard (the old Quakers). It's more of a restaurant/bar feel then the little place on Barbur and Pat makes the best Ceaser and the best pasta dishes (the chicken marsala is a favorite among many of our friends). I see in a lot of these reviews about the customer service and all I can say is don't go to either location if you are in a hurry but if you want to relax and have the time to socialize while you wait for a fantastic, authentic style Italien meal then this place is the best! Pros: Pat and his son make the place! Food is fantastic and inexpensive. Cons: Don't go if you're on a diet or in a hurry. more

Lousey customer service 6/30/2006

When we arrived, we stood in the hallway for over 5 minutes before we could find anyone to seat us. We had heard about how great the Ceasar salad was so one of our guest ordered it. Only one person makes that particular salad and he wasn't there so we couldn't get it; another guest ordered a bloody mary and the bar was out of tomato juice so the waitress commented ""since we don't have anything you want would you like to just leave?"" We decided to stay, but that waitress never returned to our table, we never had the same one the rest of the evening; no one came over to ask how our food was, fill our water etc. The food was cold and the marinara sauce was extremely runny. One guest ordered a sandwhich and they forgot to even fix it. We would not return. The lack of customer service will keep us from recommending it to anyone. Cons: lack of customer service more

So sad 5/25/2006

This tiny treasure has seemingly turned into a vast wasteland. After being rudely dealt with over the phone (apparently it is impolite to ask ""how many pieces are in a medium pizza"" as I was told ""Look, do you know what you want or not?"") we were told to come pick up our pizza in an hour. When I arrived an hour later to pick it up, they had no record of our order. We're not unreasonable people, but there really weren't any of the I'm so sorrys that one would have expected. I won't be going back and strongly encourage anyone who once loved this little place, as we did, to not go there. Hopefully someone in charge will get the message and turn it back into a great little restaurant with great food. Cons: service, attitude, promptness more

Downhill fast!! 3/28/2006

The owner is great, we have eaten here many times and loved it- until last weekend... Owner now spends his time at his new Tigard restaurant, obviously not here. Almost empty when we went in, should have been a sign. Pizza crust is thicker, cormeal burnt on botton but pizza was undercooked, bland. Used to be the best pizza in town, now subpar. Lasagna was cold in the middle. Service was terrible even though only one other table of diners. Really bad water spots on all the tableware, empty tables dirty. With little parking, small dining area, and now bad food, we won't be back to this location. Sad to see this happen. Pros: Apparently none Cons: Everything more

NY NY Comes To Tigard! 2/17/2006

I go to the NY NY on Hwy. 99 in Tigard. I am from Chicago and grew up in an Italian neighborhood. Always on the lookout for good Italian food, and I found it here! The restaurant reminds me of the storefront Italian restaurants back in Chicago, except Pat, the owner, is from The Bronx and has NY Yankees stuff all over the place! This Chicago White Sox fan forgives him because the food is always so great. There are red and white tablecloths, starched cloth napkins, and Sinatra, Dino, or Jerry Vale records playing in the background. Very cozy, very homey in here. Pat is very personable, pours a mean drink, and always has the freshest pasta in the kitchen. The gnocchi in marinara sauce is to die for! The garlic bread is always crisp and is ""just right."" This is gonna be my new Friday night Gnocchi Place! Pros: Great food, Owner, Pat, is a hoot, Cozy and friendly Cons: No salad with meal, No water offered, Dumb Yankees Stuff! more

I love this place - you will too! 5/9/2005

The subs are fantastic, the slices of pizza huge and EXACTLY the way a slice of pizza should be. We loved it so much we have been back a half-dozen times in the past month, for lunches and dinners... I've now eaten a good quarter of the menu and enjoyed every single bite. The service is quick and friendly, the atmosphere warm and inviting (the outside of the place is quite misleading). The prices are very reasonable and the desserts INCREDIBLE. Other guests have raved about the manicotti and lasanga. Pros: Food, staff, prices Cons: too small more
