The Scene
Geological history from jurassic through Pennsylvanian times has been exposed by a vast system of canyons befitting the park's name. Centered upon the confluence of the Colorado and Green rivers, the area is geographically divided into four districts. Most popular is the Island in the Sky District north of the confluence, which offers breathtaking views of the region, the rivers, and colorful Permian-aged rock. Island in the Sky is accessible by paved highway. The Needles and Maze districts east and west of the rivers, respectively, are mostly accessible by four-wheel drive and on foot.
What to Do
Beauty and serenity found here are well worth the time and effort of rough travel. The rivers district includes Cataract Canyon on the Colorado, best known for its wild whitewater. Not all of the waterways are so tumultuous; many miles of calm, scenic stretches can be enjoyed by canoe, raft, or jet boat. Various outfitters in Moab offer half- through six-day expeditions by jeep, raft, canoe, and jet boat.
