Moundville Archaelogical Park 3/24/2006

This is my most favorite place in the world to be. If you love ancient sites, this is the place to go. Admission is free for residents of the town of Moundville, and for students at the University of Alabama, and $4.00 for visitors. The museum is open daily from 9am to 5pm, park open from 8am to 8pm . The gates are locked after 8 pm and won't open until 8 am. 26 large prehistoric platform mounds (including one giant Chief's mound) in 320-acre park. Attractions include reconstructed Indian village, museum (remodeling but open to public), nature trails(newly remodeled!), campground( RV hookup), temple mound and picnic sites on banks of Black Warrior River. National Landmark Site. There are scenic nature walks (carry mosquito spray in the summertime; they are bad off the river) and well manicured grounds with open land that is perfect for kite flying or remote control plane flying. There is a paved roadway all around the park which is perfect for bike riders or skaters. The "Mounds" hosts yearly events from bike-athons to pow-wows and Native American festivals with food, crafts, art, native dancing and demonstration booths, and music. This is a historical place (the Natives who lived here, did so in 900 AD) and a beautiful place, and if you are in the area, you should visit it. more
