Been Training & Boarding at Misty Pines for 15 Years 12/12/2011

I have trained, boarded and have had groomed 8 Labrador Retrievers at Misty Pines since about 1995. We still go to to school almost every Saturday. My dogs are in the All Level and Advanced classes. We also participate in charity and other events with Misty Pines. The instructors are exceptional and are open to new ideas and suggestions on what to specifically train for in those classes. My dogs are titled hunting and field dogs and need things to be done a little bit differently during class. My requests have always been accommodated by the instructors beginning with Puppy class to the Advanced class. These folks understand that what my crew needs is often not the routine class exercises. Doing something different is A-OK and encouraged. Obviously, I have supported Misty Pines for going on 20-years now. IF anyone ever got out of line, exhibited an attitude or handled an issue less than courtesly or, most important, in an unprofessional manner, my Labradors would never have stepped a paw in the door again and I would have written a scathing review a long time ago. I've been in the Pittsburgh retriever world a long time as have many of my friends who train at Misty Pines - not one of us would hesitate a half-second to recommend this training facility to anyone regardless if they were training field dogs, competition dogs or companion dogs. Jeff and Amy Woods and their staff work tirelessly and are just terrific. They have earned an A+++ in my book. Misty Pines does more accidently for their clients and charties than others do on purpose. These folks just don't pay lip service and talk a good game - they live it. more

A more arrogant and rude individual than owner Jeff Wood you will not find. He is quick with sarcastic criticism, yet will not acknowledge or take responsibility for his operation's own carelessness. Twice my dog has come back from his stay at Msty Pines with Kennel Cough despite having had the vacinnation two weeks prior to his stay, Yes, they have nice grounds, but they are over priced for the quality of services they provide. You can do better, trust me! more

Mixed Bag, Beautiful Campus 3/11/2011

Beautiful grounds. Great outdoor man-made pond. Again, 3 - 4 months out of the year. Well posted and good rules about dog bullying in the fenced dog park area. However, its on the small side and can get crowded quick. Not necessarily staffed or always monitored. You can report incidents but when a dog park is private and charges for use, there is a reasonable expectation of staff enforcing rules and being on-site while its open. Friends of ours are hunters and have a pure breed bird dog. They sing praises for the bird dog training here. Never used the grooming b/c the wait list was so long to schedule. Overnight boarding can have a very long wait list too. Kennels are walled to about your waist then chain link, noisy, but clean. Something like 60 dog capacity........might be too much chaos for certain breeds. ?? No suites or upgraded kennels available that I found. Friends' dogs seemed completely stressed out after a three night stay. Staff interact professionally with the exception one male that is impatient. Nice retail store geared mostly to the outdoorsmen or hunting crowd. Clean facility. Prices are reasonable but, in my opinion, match the accommodations for overnight boarding. Obedience classes are pushed hard here with people voicing mixed results. Boarders pay for playtime. Its a bit off the beaten path, accessible from I-79, back roads otherwise. more

Very Nice Place! - but a lot of rules. 7/2/2008

I recently relocated to PGH from Atlanta, and had to board my Jack Russell for almost 2 weeks while we were moving into our new home. I took a tour of the facility and was impressed by the cleanliness and size. The play areas are big and kennels have outdoor/(heated)indoor areas, which was important to me because it was winter. I did have to pay additional for my dog to get playtime when I was boarding him, which I thought was odd. In my previous experiences in Atlanta with dog care, kenneled dogs are allowed to play with the ""doggie daycare"" dogs. Now that it is warmer here, the grounds are wonderful to walk my dog. We especially enjoy the pond and the play areas are also fun with the obstacles and tunnels. more

CONSUMER BEWARE!!! 5/10/2007

Mr. Jeff Wood and his staff are unreliable and do not accept responsibilty for their actions. We scheduled our female show dog for grooming at Misty Pines. The staff had been informed multiple times that our female was in heat and was to be isolated. They agreed to this. We had even asked for them to kennel her when she was not being groomed. We offered to stay with our dog until she was groomed, and then take her home. We were told that this was not policy. The day of her appointment, a careless staff member placed our female in the open play yard with an intact male. Exactly 60 days later, we had an unplanned litter of half-breed puppies. We have requested that Misty Pines reimburse us for the cost associated with the litter. Mr. Woods has refused ( however, he doesn't deny that the event took place. we have dna proof) This is blatant irresponsibility and lack of safe-keeping of a pet entrusted to their care. DON'T LEAVE YOUR PET AT THIS FACILITY!!1 Try English Acres - a wonderful enviroment, and extremely dedicated owners. Cons: Thumbs down. Irresponsible staff and owner more
