Mishka's Cafe

I liked the place until I came in with my laptop one day and was asked to move because I was at the wrong table. I'm a hard-working grad student, I mind my own business, and I was just trying to sit where I wouldn't be crowding anyone. (There was one person in the area reserved for non-studiers, whereas the area for studying was packed. Maybe because it's hard for anyone in school to find time to just read the gd newspaper!) I'm a paying customer. Let me sit where I want. Am I bothering anyone? more

Mishka's is home to the only coffee roaster in Davis that serve only organic and fair trade beans. On top of being "guilt-free," their coffee is consistently some of the best in town. In addition to drinks, Mishka's also has a nice selection of pastries and confections such as croissants, macaroons, baklava, and chocolate truffles. Many might consider the truffles to be the best in town, better than the ones at Ciocolat, a chocolate-dessert-centered business. The truffles are made by a local outfit called Vevey Confections. You can also find them at Common Grounds. This place is great for late night study sessions as people will share their tables once it get crowded. There's a hugely comfortable feel to the place, and even with all of the background noise, a great place for studying. more

Modeled after the old fashioned European café, where people go to chat, have a coffee, and linger for hours, this place is a favorite of UCD students who can been seen here at all hours of the day studying, or relaxing. An extensive café menu and a large selection of loose teas makes it a great place to come for a bit to eat or an unusual tea. The only problem is its own popularity, sometimes its hard to find a seat. more

Crowded, popular, non-pretentious cafe. Outdoor seating is nice, and they actually have a section where studying, computer, etc. are not permitted-- a place reserved for those of us who actually like to have a cup of Joe and read a newspaper the old fashioned way-- on paper. We haven't seen the place when UCDavis is in session, but it's ok for the summer. Biggest draw for many is the free wireless internet. more
