Took my laptop there because the screen would go dark if you opened it wider than a 45-degree angle. Let's see: half-closed, it works; open all the way, it doesn't. It's pretty bloody obvious what you need to check first, right? There's a faulty cable in there somewhere.
Mikey's Hook Up charged me $40 just for the privilege of having them look inside my computer. I suspect they never did look inside. If they did, they must be staggeringly incompetent. Here's what they told me: they don't know what was wrong with it, but they suspect a faulty logic board. Their suggestion: let them mail my iBook to the Apple service center, where for the low, low $300 flat fee Apple will fix whatever it is Mikey's Hook Up failed to spot.
I told them to forget it and took my laptop to the Harlem Apple Store, which right now is just a guy working out of his apartment. The guy, David, is awesome. He opened the Mac up, diagnosed a faulty cable (surprise, surprise!) and replaced it, at the total cost to me of $80.
Mikey's Hook Up, I want my $40 dollars back!
Pros: Trendy surroundings
Cons: Incompetent or maybe lazy - bad service either way
