This a nurturing environment . The emergency room wait is usually not very long and is good for minor emergencies. I fthe problem is too big for there capabilities, they transport you immediately to the larger hospital in the area. The staff treat you with dignity and respect. This a nice Catholic hospital run by nuns and they are with you every step of the way thru your treatment. PROS: caring staff CONS: are unable to handle larger emergencies more

Owner Message
  • The story of Mercy begins over 90 years ago during the devastating flu pandemic of 1918, when we first opened our doors as Queen's Hospital on the corner of Congress and State Streets in Portland, Maine. Over the years, Mercy has faced many challenges, among those a growing and changing population, and dramatically different medical technologies. As we continue to fulfill Mercy's mission of service to the changing health needs of the greater Portland community, we will be implementing a two-phase plan that ultimately relocates most of our State Street services to the Fore River campus - though State Street will continue to operate as a full-service hospital and 24-hour Emergency Department. We plan to begin work on Phase II of the Fore River campus within the next few years, and expect to fully relocate well in time for Mercy's 100-year anniversary in 2018. Mercy State Street Campus is located at the corner of State & Spring Streets. Mercy Fore River Campus is located on Fore River Parkway.. Clinical excellence and compassionate care for nearly 95 years. That is the story of Mercy.

Beyond the doors at Mercy State Street and Mercy Fore River - and all our locations throughout greater Portland and beyond - is a story of the latest medical technology, utilized by a team of highly skilled doctors, nurses, physician assistants, therapists and support staff.

Alongside all of this expertise, the story of Mercy is a story of community health care that recognizes each patient as a whole person - body, mind and spirit. A story of quality. A story of compassion. A story of value.

    Our Roots

Mercy is a not-for-profit community health care system sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. We are also a member of Catholic Health East,a multi-institutional organization serving communities through regional health care systems in 11 eastern states from Maine to Florida.

Established in 1918 by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland and the Sisters of Mercy,Mercy Hospital's mission has always been to carry out the healing work of Christ by providing compassionate, accessible, clinically excellent health care, especially to the poor and disadvantaged.

    Our Difference

Mercy Health System of Maine encompasses three unique campuses with a combined total of 230 inpatient beds. And at our flagship State Street and Fore River campuses, all rooms are now 100% private, enhancing a speedy recovery and a more restful, less stressful stay for our patients.

The Mercy system provides a broad mix of medical, surgical, and outpatient services. In addition,we bring the Mercy Difference closer to you and your family through a growing number of family and specialty physician practices and several important community-based programs throughout the region.

    Our Responsibility

This year,Mercy's community focus amounted to nearly $12 million in benefits, ranging from un-reimbursed and pro-bono medical services to community education and prevention outreach. One of Maine's largest employers,Mercy is the first and only hospital to receive the Governor's Award for Business Excellence, which recognizes Maine businesses that demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to their communities and employees.
The full range of Mercy Health Care Services are focused on clinical excellence, compassionate care, and a commitment to quality and patient safety that is second to none in the region. In fact,Mercy was recently recognized by the Maine State Employee Health Commission as the only Tier 1 hospital in Greater Portland, making us the preferred provider for some 40,000 state workers and their dependents - a privilege we've held over the past five years.
