Went here with co-workers for lunch. I had the tomato and buffalo mozzarella pizza. It was soggy and I couldn't eat it like a regular pizza. Also, we sat ""on top of the oven"" and I was sweating the whole time. more

Yummy Pizza, Yummier Desserts 5/24/2010

One of the first things I heard about Matchbox before I ate there was that the pizza was AMAZING. So I went there expecting some life-changing, revelatory pizza and of course I was kind of let down. It's pretty darn good pizza, definitely. But I have a feeling there's probably another spot somewhere in DC where the pizza is even better. I do like their spicy sausage, peppers and onions pizza. And their shrimp and grits is excellent - you don't get many shrimp but it is just an appetizer. I am huge fan of their desserts - they have this cookie sandwich concoction that's just decadent and I loved their doughnuts with espresso-kahlua creme dipping sauce. So if you go to Matchbox, try to save room for dessert. Pros: some good, strong dishes; awesome dessert Cons: not sure if it's the best pizza in DC more

Upscale Pizza Bistro 3/30/2010

For a while matchbox was my go-to restaurant when out of town visitors wanted a quick and affordable bite to eat downtown. You cannot go wrong with ANYTHING on the menu. I am addicted to their sliders and pomegranite martini. Just steps from the Verizon Center and Chinatown metro, Matchbox is the perfect date spot or girls night out restaurant. Pros: Excellent sliders and pizza Cons: Can get crowded easily more

delicious pizza 3/18/2010

This is my favorite place for pizza in DC. The drinks are normally delicious as well. The only real downside is the lack of a waiting area - expect to be standing on the sidewalk while you wait for a table to open. more

Brunch Review Juicy sliders and thin-crust pizzas have been driving the hordes to Matchbox for years, but for my money, brunch is the meal worth ordering. Cast-iron skillets loaded up with eggs, potatoes and proteins including smoked salmon or steak make for hearty options -- in addition to bringing a down-home touch to the table. I always go for the stromboli-like roll of goat cheese, chorizo, asparagus and scrambled eggs; a zippy chipotle sour cream brightens the dish. For dessert, tuck into cinnamon-dusted "doughnuts," deep-fried puffs served with an espresso-Kahlua dipping sauce. It's indulgent for midday, but a fun dish to share with friends. The bloody marys are not to be missed, especially for those who like a morning beverage tinged with heat. Skip the "bloody beer"; only a die-hard Pabst Blue Ribbon aficionado could drink the stuff when swirled with the house-made bloody mary mix. (For the record, co-owner Drew Kim says the drink "does very well for us.") Capitol Hill-dwellers take note: The Eighth Street location has live jazz during Sunday brunch. -- Julia Beizer (Feb. 19, 2010) more
