Great deal in downtown Phoenix 8/12/2010

We stayed at the Hyatt in downtown and stumbled upon this restaurant across the street. This restaurant was a great deal! The margarita pitcher was a great value and was perfect for my wife and me. Everything we tried tasted great and was not expensive compared to the other restaurants in the area. I loved the chicken Picado, and my wife loved the red tamale dish. The website doesn't hide the fact that the restaurant is owned by Greeks and there are Greek items on the menu, but to us it seemed authentic and tasted great and was worth it. We had breakfast there the next morning and the breakfast was great, too. Much better than the hotel breakfast buffet.\r more

really tasty 7/28/2010

Six of us stopped in here for lunch earlier this week. Our service was actually quite good,\r \r They had quite the variety on their menu, Greek, burgers...even grilled cheese! My friends told me they'd disown me if I ordered grilled cheese at a Mexican restaurant, so I got the chicken fajita salad. This salad was so big they had to carry it out on it's own platter. The chicken was cooked perfectly and all the veggies were fresh. The other folks at my table ordered some of the $6 specials of the day (tacos and burritos) and those looked really tasty as well. more

We were ignored 3/15/2009

We are Asian from the Philipiines, moved here from New York 2 years ago. We have been a long time New York residents and you will never experienced prejudice in other race there. They are more educated, more diverse state. We are both with a college degree and a very high paying job with a Fortune 500 company here in Phoenix. Anyway, my wife & I went downtown Phoenix yesterday 3/14/09 for good weekend stroll around the city. We got hungry and went to Matador Restaurant, We got sitted and waited for a long time but no server came to our table. After a while, two caucasians came in and got sitted next to our table. And the server approached the 2 caucasians and took their order before us. We felt humiliated and we decided to just walked out and leave the restaurant. We are finding out that Phoenix is a city of prejudice. That's not the only time we have a bad experience in a Phoenix restaurant. My wife's company along with their vendors went to Capital Grill in E Camelback and got ignored by the server too. They should not judge how people look. People don't know that we are a very generous tipper. I hope somebody will read and recognize this problem here in Phoenix. Pros: Didn't get a chance to try their food Cons: Waited a long time and got ignored more

Expected too much, gone with little. 2/18/2009

My husband and I enjoy of good food, specialy good mexican food as you expected it. We have tried mexican restaurants all over the place and, we had good expectations on this one, but we left a bit disappointed.\r \r Food took about average to be served. I believe the place is prepared for a good eating experience, however we found it a little overpriced for what it was, and after getting the check we realized that we would had been better at eating at any random berto's in town. \r Pros: Location is ok. Cons: Food was ""ungood"". more

What the heck happened?! 1/26/2006

The matador has been around for years. In the past, I have heard good things about it and thought it would be a treat to eat there while we were downtown. What a wake up call! The tacos were very greasy, the beans had and odd color to them and the food was very bland. Calling the food Supermarket Frozen Food would only be praise. The service was slow and unattentive even though there was only one other couple with us in the entire restaurant. The only thing possibly keeping this place open is its close proximity to the downtown lunch crowd. Pros: Downtown location Cons: Food, Service more

Don't Go! 1/5/2006

This was the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. Don't waste your time. I cannot say one good thing about the food or the service. more

Decent Downtown Mexican 12/23/2002

The daily lunch specials are a good deal, and the unlimited chips with a very unique salsa combo are excellent. I recommend the Tuesday special - Red beef burrito. Service could be better, and other places in town have better food, but the value is definitely good. more

Give the Bull a Chance 7/9/2002

Why this place remains open is beyond me. Whatever it is they are serving, it isn't Mexican food. Take your frozen Mexican entree from the supermarket, make it even more bland and make customers wait 45 minutes to get it and you have the Matador. If this place wasn't so tragic, it would be guilty of committing fraud. This isn't a Mexican restaurant, this is a disgrace kept alive by a busy downtown crowd that needs something or anything to eat. The Matador needs to be sent to the showers. Pros: Downtown location Cons: Poor service, Terrible food more
