Editorial review from Citysearch 7/7/2012

Carole is fantastic. She worked with us to design wedding invitations on a small budget. She had great advice on the invitations and also had really good ideas about other aspects of our wedding. She was very knowledgeable and thoughtful and genuinely listened to us in order to help us come up with invitations that fit our personalities and matched what we wanted. This was a great experience. more

Great Stationary, Great local store, great service! 12/22/2009

Carole who owns the store is wonderful, big-hearted, and is the best of Pittsburgh. This store has everything great stationary stores around the world have, but also has a great collection of unique gifts and classy Pittsburgh items. This is the type of neighborhood store one should support and whose products you will feel good about. Pros: great service, caring people, and very high quality product Cons: it is a smaller shop compared to chains more

Good Selection of Quality Stationery; Horrible Service 9/22/2008

Dropped by Marjie Allen Fine Stationery on a Sunday to browse wedding invitations -- a day which they aren't typically open. However, the local arts festival was going on, so the owner was there with the door propped open. I walked in and the owner was on the phone, so I browsed while I waited for her to finish her call. After about five minutes of her continuing her call (clearly personal in nature) she asked if I needed something. I told her I wanted to take a look at wedding invitations, and she (clearly annoyed) told the person on the phone that she would need to call them back. Her next question was when my wedding was, and when I told her it was about a year away, she dismissed my request, looked at me like I was crazy, and immediately told me that it was too early to look at invitations! I pushed back and mentioned that I just wanted to take an initial, casual look through some books because it was my first time ordering custom invitations. She told me that since their store is so ""customer-service oriented"" that they don't let people browse -- they'd want to sit down with me and talk through everything ? something that she ""didn't have time for today."" She went on to tell me pointedly that the store wasn't supposed to be open (even though the door was propped open) and that she was just trying to get caught up around the store. I went into the store excited about looking at wedding invitations and left extremely irritated and disappointed. I've shopped there before for holiday cards, and the service was shoddy, but never this downright dismissive and rude. While they do have wonderful things, it's not worth experiencing the bad service. Pros: Quality products Cons: Horrible service more

not impressed 7/17/2007

I have lived and shopped in Shadyside for many years and when I became engaged I decided to have a look at their selection of wedding invitations in the interest of supporting a local business. There wasn't another customer in the store, only a girl stocking a shelf and what I could only guess to be the owner. I walked toward the many invitation books. As I squeezed past her, the girl asked if she could help me but I told her no, I only wanted to see what was available. The owner, who had not addressed me verbally, stared at me in distain and said to the girl, ""SHE DOES NEED HELP"" as if to imply that I would certainly ruin something if someone wan't watching over me like a hawk. It was extremely uncomfortable to say the least. I do not expect anyone in any retail establishment to jump like a Jack Russell when I walk in the door but if I am considering spending over $3,000, courtesy goes a long way and this store most certainly has a long way to go. Pros: Selection of quality stationery Cons: Rude owner/manager more

Very pleasant to work with so far 3/27/2007

I completely disagree with the person that wrote the last review. I have found this store to be extremely helpful and unpretentious. I am ordering my wedding invitations from them and they have been VERY pleasant and easy to work with throughout this process. They have a large selection of invitations and they were helpful and not snotty about keeping me within my modest budget. I have not officially placed my order yet, so it is possible that things could still go wrong, but at this point I've been very happy with the service that i have received. The first time that I went in there, it was 5:15 and they close at 5:30 but they graciously sat down with me and allowed me to leaf through their sample books, even though they were about to close. They were helpful with choosing the design of my invite, figuring out wording, and keeping me within budget. So far, so good! Pros: helpful staff, large selection Cons: parking tough, close early on weekdays more

Nice products - rude, arrogant service. Look elsewhere for the same quality product. 3/15/2007

I recently went to Marjie Allon to purchase wedding announcements on a neighbor's reccomendation. They have a vast selection of invitations, stationery, etc. and I was very pleased with the result. However, the service was terrible. My mother and I were greeted with indifference and disdain - we should have left right away. We selected announcements & were told they would be ready in 10 days to 2 weeks, with an additional 1-2 days to address envelopes with their calligraphy machine. A few days later, I got a phone call saying the proof was ready & asking me to come in and approve it. When I entered the store, our contact ""Diane"" was chatting with someone I can only assume was another employee. There were no other customers in the shop. She looked at me as if with disapproval and asked very rudely ""Do you need something?"". I identified myself & told her why I was there, at which point she sighed and grudgingly interrupted her chat to find my proof.\r \r After 3 weeks and no notification, my mother called & was told ""Oh yes, the announcements are here."" We said we would drop off a list of addresses for the envelopes and were told that would take an additional 1-2 weeks. Far from the 1-2 days we were originally told. Needless to say, we ended up hand addressing the envelopes ourselves.\r \r Marjie Allon has a great selection, but if you want personal service that treats you with respect, look elsewhere. The employees are rude, arrogant snobs who seem indifferent to the fact that customers make a choice to spend hundreds of dollars at this establishment rather than another. Choose another establishment. Pros: Great selection, high quality stationery Cons: Rude, indifferent, negligent service more
