Below Average Theatre but Good Indie Movie Selection 10/9/2006

The Maple Art Theatre, which is nestled behind a mega mini mall along Telegraph Rd. and Maple (15 Mile) in Bloomfield Hills is not the greatest theatre, but you don't have a whole lot of choices for Indie movies. Last night, curious to see what "Jesus Camp" was all about I headed out to the Maple Art Theatre since it was the only place playing the film. A ticket to the film cost me $8.75, slightly higher than the going rate at other bigger theatres. The staff was mostly sitting around talking, not really being very helpful. After I walked through the gate toward the theatre and employee ran up to me and asked to tear my ticket (there was nobody around at the gate). I felt like I was bothering him from talking with his friends. Once in the theatre there were a few previews and the movie started. The house lights remained on "dim" setting the entire time and unfortunatley I was sitting directly below one which distracted me almost the entire show - I probably should have just moved. Everytime there was music with even a tinge of bass, the speakers in the theatre rattled and made popping sounds. If you're going to see a film here, I recommend you sit up front where the house lights aren't as bright and the sound system seems to be a little better. To their credit, this theatre and the Main St. Theatre in Royal Oak are the only places you're going to find newer indie movies and documentaries. more
