Buy a book, change a life 1/17/2011

This store is amazing. I visited my friend Paul Brown and family in MBTS and was introduced to MBTB by Don, his son in law. I found, in the back of the store, an old, beautifully illustrated, book on the classification of marine Helminths, flatworms that live in the ocean, and bought it for my professor at Nahant Marine Station. He was a specialit in this field. I noticed but paid little mind to the previous owner's name and inscription.\r On giving it to my prof he noted the inscriiption and broke down. This book had been owned and inscribed by his first doctoral student at UNH, over 50 years ago. What are the chances of this? Only at MBTB store!\r \r more

Hidden Gem 6/14/2009

Manchester By The Book is one of the last of its kind to survive the unfortunate takeover by national bookstore chains. The friendly owner is happy to make suggestions based on your taste and interests. The shelves and tables of hard to find books are coupled with the latest best sellers. It's a treasure chest of words and a perfect place for readers of all ages to spend a minute or an entire afternoon. Pros: Customer service, hard to find books Cons: nadda more

What a gem! 6/9/2009

The maps of Cape Ann ought to have the words HERE BE TREASURE, with an X over a corner of Union Street on old Route 127 in Manchester-by-the-Sea. If the characters on LOST found this place under the infamous Hatch, they might never come out. In short, this a booklover's blast. With a comfy couch!! Pros: He just gets the neatest stuff Cons: He keeps adding neat stuff and I must have it all more

a find for the literatti and bibliophiles on the North Shore 4/17/2009

For those coming to Singing Beach in the summer by car or rail: when dark clouds loom and rain ensues and you have to leave the beach, get yourself to Manchester-by-the-Book. You can spend all day amongst the stacks and it's right near the train station, in the heart of downtown. Locals know about this haunt that's been around for over 10 years and is a staple in Manchester-by-the-Sea. If you don't find what you're looking for, the owner, Mark Stolle, who minds the shop virtually every day, will be more than happy to help you or at the very least have an invigorating discussion. Treat yourself to an afternoon of being surrounded by books, in any weather or season, and enjoy! Pros: great selection of used and rare books Cons: n/a more
