Well, went there for a late lunch while on vacation following the advice of the woman at the information kiosk. The service was good and the view was great. The seafood mix was good; lots of fresh mussels, but didn't have all the items that was described on the menu (no fish,etc... just mussels, shrimp, and a couple of snow crab legs). The salmon dish was just okay... could have been anywhere and nothing special. The big disappointment was the salad (crab louis). At a restaurant right on the beach, called the Mad CRAB, owned by folks who came up there to be CRAB fishermen; I would have expected fresh crab and not canned!! Suffice to say; I'll try another restaurant next time thru. more

Mad Crab - Wonderful Waterfront Restaurant! 3/17/2008

My husband & I wanted to take a drive to the north end of Whidbey Island this last Sunday, and ended up in Coupeville. I punched in local restaurants on my iPhone, and found this site. Well, after reviewing the first two reviews, we decided to take our chances and have a looksey for ourselves, even if just for the entertainment value alone. Well, I'm happy to say, I'm not sure where those others ate, but the Mad Crab we went to was wonderful, very clean and charming. Our waitress was sweet and friendly, service was fast and the food was incredible. The prices were right inline with fresh seafood - about $20 per entrée. The seafood was wonderful - we had the steamed mussels, the mussel linguine and the fresh Dungeness crab cakes. All was yummy, served hot and wasn't over-salted. If you're wanting a waterfront restaurant with fresh seafood on a leisurely weekend drive, we highly recommend The Mad Crab in Coupeville, WA. We're giving it 2 thumbs up! Like the other gal said in her post, the 2 negative posts are almost criminal, very unfounded and should be disregarded. If in question, try it yourselves. more

The Mad Crap, my kind of Restaurant & Bar. 6/26/2007

The other two reviews I've read are so miss leading. Almost criminal! I I think the food and people who work at the Mad Crab are excellent .I've lived on Whidbey Island for 29 years and have eaten in all the restaurants around here. I've eaten at the Mad Crab many times and each time it was better than the last. Most weekends there's great live music downstairs in the bar. For my money the Mad Crab is a wonderful place to enjoy great food, great music, and a great night out with family or friends while over looking Coupeville Bay. I give four stars to the Mad Crap. So there!. more

Not So Good 4/22/2007

My family and I visited the Mad Crab last summer on our vacation to whidbey island. When we first entered, there was a little boy who looked like he must have been only 12 years old. We walked by the kitchen and had second thoughts on coming to the mad crab as all of the cooks were scroungy looking and appeared to be intoxicated. It was too late to turn back now, so we picked a nice table by the window. The menu was made of school paper and was dirty and torn. All of the servers seemed to be very young and disrespectful, so we asked for someone older. We got a new server and she was blonde with very large breasts. She appeared to be interested in my son, and we were soon offended when she tried to show him her fun bags. She informed us that they were out of almost everything on the menu. We were left with only a few choices. The food was not very impressive, very over salted, and very unappetizing, especially after seeing our server grab young co-workers' behinds before touching our food. I complained about the food and our server told us to fuck off. The cooks threw food at us as we walked out. I will never be back to the mad crab. more

This seafood restaurant is a mixed bag 3/17/2006

We recently ate here on a "girls night out". Freshly sliced bread is brought to the table along with saucers of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. We ordered the calamari and the artichoke dip for appetizers. The calamari was a big disappointment, especially for $10! All we could taste was the breading, the addition of salt helped the breading but not the overall flavor. We really enjoyed the artichoke dip but found the portion size small. The tortilla chips to dip seemed more like fried pita chips, they were yummy but there were way more chips than dip. Portion sizes of the entrées were large. It seemed like the fish portions were enough for two people. The salmon and halibut entrée was tasty. Beware that the blackened halibut is quite spicy! I had the seafood bowl. It contained crab, prawns, mussels and clams. I thought it was ironic that a place named after a crabbing expedition in Puget Sound serves king crab instead of Dungenous. My entrée was advertised as coming with crab legs. Instead I got a hunk of body. It was very over salted. I only had two prawns in my dish but that's ok because they were overcooked to the consistency of rubber! The mussels and clams were delicious. Everything came out swimming in a tasty broth. There was nothing to soak up the broth with so I asked for more bread and enjoyed every last drop. For dessert, we got the ice cream sundae. The chocolate sauce was very tasty. The views are great, right on the water. The prices seemed steep for Coupeville, the entrées were in the $20 range. Also, the water in Coupeville isn't very tasty. Get a beverage or ask for a slice of lemon to disguise the water's flavor. more
