local shows! 4/16/2006

local 506 is a members only private club on west franklin street. the membership is $5. The reason most people go here is for the cheap shows. they have some really good local and indie bands playing every week. they have a connection with cat's cradle where if a band can't be scheduled at cat's cradle, they can play at 506. check out their website for a schedule. more

pretty good 4/6/2006

Local 506 is a member's only club. But I guess that's not so bad considering membership is only something like five dollars. They have a lot of random bands playing all the time. Some are really good finds, and others are a little less so. The whole atmosphere is kind of dark, which isn't always a good thing. It's also a little cramped and seating sucks. I only go there if I know there's a good band playing or there's an event going on. more

bands are cool...other stuff could be better 8/16/2005

i've only seen a few shows here, but i thought it was pretty cool overall. indie-er shows than cat's cradle puts on, but the shows are cheap and the stage and pit are nice. parking sucks, but thats franklin street. the membership thing is also kind of lame, but it's a minor annoyance. if a band you know is there, or if you're looking for good cheap acts to see, it's definitely worth a look. more

Local 506, Local Music 8/2/2005

Local 506 is an established venue in Chapel Hill for local and national acts, and especially since the demise of Go! Room 4, they’ve begun to play Chicago to The Cat’s Cradle’s New York, drawing solid, well-known, but slightly smaller acts that might not be able to fill Chapel Hill’s most famous venue. The space is nice: the stage is high, so all but the shortest patrons should be able to see at least a little, even from the back. The drinks are about what you’d expect from a rock club: not outrageous, but not local dive bar cheap. Two things that can be frustrating: parking in Chapel-Hill/Carborro is always frustrating at best, so be prepared for at least the possibility of a hike from your parking space to the front door (and if you park illegally, get ready for a ticket); and Local 506’s member/guest policy. Call or check the website about it before you buy tickets to a show; they are serious and inflexible about this rule. more

Editorial
  • In Short
It's not exactly the kind of place where you can dribble dinner on your steppin' out clothes and still go anyway--not exactly. Local 506 is aptly named as it reflects local flavor and flare as well as anywhere else in the Triangle. The crowd is mixed and the music usually is too, but nothing beats this club when the genres of choice bounce around its two dark, often smoky rooms. Local 506 is famous for its Alt-Country/Rockabilly/Southern Rock.
