Good Food Great Service 10/5/2011

I decided to try this place out one day with my girlfriend Rawan. I live in the Dominion so I really dont care to drive downtown for lunch but she twisted my arm. Well, I must say that to my surprise everything was absolutely delicious. The customer service was amazing! There is truly nothing that is more important than customer service to me. The outdoor patio was so beautiful. I'm not on that side of town often but I will be back. You guys keep up the great work! more

good food 9/18/2011

I love Main Street eatting! 4/7/2008

La Fonda is another reason that I love eating on Main Street! I think this place has such a cute vibe going on! I'm a salad person, but a picky salad person, and I absolutely love the salad they have with walnuts and chicken. It's a tiny bit pricey, but obviously I think it's well worth it! more

Traditional favorite, average cuisine 12/2/2007

I've patronized this SA landmark since the 70's. Located in a quaint stucco building in a quiet neighborhood that is easily accessible from downtown area, this restaurant is a favorite for locals and a real treat for tourists. The atmosphere and service recalls that old-time casual dining experience that has virtually disappeared from the restaurant scene now days. The patio area is a ideal spot to enjoy a margarita or a tall glass of sangria. Service is generally very good, but there have been occasions over the years when I felt a little neglected. Food is primarily traditional Tex Mex with a lean toward Southwest cuisine. I'd rate the quality on most dishes I've sampled as middle-of-the-road average in a town that boasts some of the best mexican food in Texas. My wife and grown daughter love this ""cute"" little place. As former restaurant owner, I have to point out that great food and decent service will sell regardless of the ""atmospere"", but the over-all experience at La Fonda should place it pretty high on your dining list the next time you're in SA. Pros: If you have a romantic notion of old SA Mexican dining, it's perfect. Cons: Average food in a great Mexican food town. more

girlfriend tradition 8/24/2007

Each year my BFFs come here, drink spectacular margaritas on the patio, order the specials and celebrate our lives and loves in San Antonio. Wouldn't go anywhere else! Pros: cuisine, not just food Cons: parking limited due to popularity more

Great place 5/25/2007

I'm not the biggest fan of mexican food, but I really liked this place. My favorite dish is the rainbow trout, thought I don't think you can go wrong with any of their other dishes. It has a great atmosphere, and the waiters are very professional. I love sitting outside in the back. THere's a beautiful little fountain. My coworkers and I would go there all the time for birthdays and other celebrations more

Good food, good atmosphere 11/2/2006

Great Mexican food and a great atmosphere, especially if it is a nice day and you can sit outside. Of course, the margaritas are excellent as well! Pros: Margairtas, Mexican Food more

Wonderful Food and Service! 5/21/2006

My wife and I ate lunch at La Fonda this weekend and it was an excellent experience. Our server, Maria, was very attentive and checked on us repeatedly. The food is not your standard Mexican food but is creative and delicious. We have eaten here one time before and enjoyed it very much then. I highly recommend it. more

Good Experience 8/17/2005

The food was good, yet the outside patio made the experience completely worth it. While being relaxed and casual, La Fonda still has a touch of class enough to suit the needs of any well dined individual. The location is convenient and parking was simple. I will definitely be back. Pros: Good Parking, Relaxed Atmosphere, Great Outdoor Seating more

Since I was a Kid 1/3/2003

I've been going here since 1946 and still enjoy the ambiance, the good food, great service, and wonderful memories. Pros: atmosphere, food, service more

Yo quiero LA F 7/13/2002

Ive had a chance to know LaFonda, from front and back, they have the most creative, and selected dishes of a true mexican restaurant. Reminds me of Mi Mexico............ Great food listen to a Mexican Pros: Freshness, enviroment, great patio Cons: not play ground, kids r welcome more

La Fonda not so Hot 7/9/2002

Really enjoyed the ambiance, but the food lacked in quality; the service lacked as well. Needs to work on these two aspects. Pros: environment, open windows Cons: slacking service, food quality more

La Let Down 7/7/2002

My wife and I recently dined at La Fonda on Main and were extremely disappointed in the food. The patio was pleasant, and the service was very good. Our food arrived quickly, however I believe that was due to the fact it had been prepared well before our arrival. All of side items appeared to come from a box or can, and the main dishes were uninspired. I could understand La Fonda's popularity were it located in Ohio, but San Antonio has far too many great mexican restaurants for this place to remain open let alone popular. Pros: Nice Patio, Good Service, Warm chips Cons: Bad Food, Bad Food, Bad Food more

  • Historic La Fonda on Main La Fonda's long and colorful history began on Main Avenue in 1930 when resourceful sisters Virginia Berry and Nannie Randall opened a Mexican food-to-go shop. These two ladies supplied take-home Tex-Mex favorites to the neighborhood. In spite of the Great Depression, their little business prospered and an opportunity presented itself to purchase the house across the street at 2415 North Main Avenue. Converting this home to a full-service restaurant seemed a risk worth taking, and in 1932, La Fonda on Main formally opened. In the early 1930's, San Antonio was a very different place. Houston had just surpassed San Antonio as the largest city in Texas, with Dallas in third place. Laurel Heights and Monte Vista were affluent suburbs at the northern edge of our city. Model-A's and trolley cars were the primary means of transportation to and from the busy downtown area for San Antonio's 235, 000 residents. So much has changed. Today, La Fonda's staff and patrons recall old times, memorable restaurant highlights and the hard-working ladies that made it all possible. It is fascinating to hear how popular La Fonda has been as a dining spot of history's most celebrated people. Every famous officer in World War II seems to have eaten here, including Generals Eisenhower, MacArthur and Hill. Even American presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson enjoyed La Fonda's fare. Gary Cooper, John Wayne, Yul Brenner, Veronica Lake, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, along with many other stars, visited this historic restaurant. Most importantly, La Fonda became a lunch and dinner tradition for San Antonio families. All the while, the La Fonda reputation grew for having delicious food and great service. Over the years, the restaurant received many accolades, including the coveted Holiday Magazine Award for Fine Dining and the Duncan Hines Seal of Approval. Mrs. Berry's sons Bill and Jack became active in the business in the 1950's, carried on the tradition and expanded the La Fonda reputation. Today, besides our La Fonda on Main, there are two other successful La Fonda Restaurants in San Antonio, each separately owned and operated. In late 1997, we purchased this landmark restaurant. As San Antonio natives, we also have our remembrances of special times at La Fonda. Our goal has been to breathe new life into this wonderful institution and create an environment that will endure the test of at least another "seventy-five years". We have extensively renovated the building and kitchen and created a patio worthy of a true Mexican hacienda. We have lightened the food, retained the best of the Tex-Mex and added many of the authentic dishes of interior Mexico. We hope that Mrs. Berry and Mrs. Randall would approve of our restoration and beautification of this historic landmark. Thank you for helping the story continue. We're glad you're here!
