I was so pleased to hear that La Caille had gone a new direction. Away from the old tired food and service. I had to try it out. My wife and I had the best meal that we have ha...

We were celebrating my daughters 16th birthday, and LaCaille is one of her favorite restaurants. Since it is quite expensive, we don't go often. But turning 16 is a big deal, and ...

former server with the inside dish 5/12/2008

As a former server of this institution, I am happy to say that this place is a total joke. The general manager is a former alcoholic pervert who harrasses all of the female servers and negotiates prices for all of the canned goods, meat, and vegetables...meaning, he looks for the cheapest cuts of meats, therefore the worst quality as well. None of the cooks there are trained chefs, including the ""executive chef"" that the instution so proudly boasts. The health codes violations are unbelievable, and the event coordinators are untrained, nepotistic beasts who exploit all of their servers by paying them minimum wage. This place is an upscalehooters, wannabe Disneyland and not worth a penny. The dry foods pantry that is kept under tight security is full of rodents, ratfeces, and canned soups and broths. Why would a place that charges so much use canned au jus, canned miropoix, canned onion soup, canned tomato soup (for the ""tomato bisque""), and spoiled vegetables. The wine is the only thing that can compensate for the prices, but the wine is still overpriced. If you want food that has quality and a good price, go to the Paris Bistro, Mazza, Fresco, Lugano, or anything else besides this dump. Pros: some of the service, although some servers are completely untrained and unprofessional Cons: everything, price, food, management...awful more

Very Bad 5/3/2008

I must agree with some of the other reviews on this restaurant. We both (my husband and I) felt as though we were victims of a con after we were presented with a $362.00 bill for an evening that was very disappointing. We have never been opposed to paying top dollar for a special night......however, value must come into play somewhere along the line. The food and service were both terrible. I could describe in detail about the tasteless, dry, and overcooked venison I ordered (it was sent back to the kitchen twice, and then I gave up) but I do not have the time. I could describe in detail about the unprofessional and rude server, but I do not have the patience. The fact that my husband and I wasted our time and money, and through away any good memories of our 20th wedding anniversary by dining at this place is our fault.........but we do live and learn, and will never return. If this review saves anyone else from the frustration we endured, then we will feel better. Pros: The view Cons: The whole restaurant is a con more

lipstick on a pig 3/26/2008

We arrived late, yet were seated promptly. Outside our window was enormous mounds of peacock dung, we ask to move to another, and were informed that none were currently available, although only three other tables were occupied. Our server, who will remain nameless, was at best, unprofessional. She was confused, and had no answers for the questions we had. Her fingernails were dirty, her costume was torn, and her hair was unkept. The food was a joke. I ordered the lamb (overcooked and tough) pressed into a pile of mashed potatoes with flavored orange juice on top for about $72.00. My partner ordered the duck, which came to him bloody rare surrounded by old, almost moldy berries which ran about $60.00. The wine steward (a teenage-looking boy) who claimed to be an expert, hounded us constantly to purchase a $400 dollar bottle of wine we were not interested in, even after we had finished our meal. The view of the mountains (beyond the piles of dung) were fabulous. Overall, we were not impressed with much. For the staggering prices this place charges we deserved much more. If this place is 4-star, than so is applebees or tgi fridays. more

An amazing experience 3/16/2008

If you want an enchanting evening out of another era, you must visit LaCaille. Do NOT expect a quick meal at some diner down the street. It is an experience - and well worth it! IT IS FRENCH, and the french make dining an event - you really are transported for an evening and it is magical. The presentation of the food is beautiful, the atmosphere is unbelievable, and there is nothing like it anywhere else in Utah. If you go - realize you are going to a 5 star (plus) restaurant - and enjoy an unforgettable evening! more

below average 3/8/2008

This restaurant has a reputation for being very expensive. The atmosphere is suppose to be beautiful in the summertime (average in winter). We must have dined on an off-evening, it was very slow. The food was not up to our expectations, the service was fair, yet somewhat unprofessional for what is described as a fine dining establishment. Overall, not very good for the amazing prices they charge (about $150.00 per person). Pros: mountain view Cons: food, service, very slow more

Perfect experience 2/12/2008

Whenever we have out-of-towners visiting, we always take them to LaCaille for Sunday Brunch. the atmosphere is enchanting, and I have found the service attentive and gracious. The food has always been thoughtfully prepared and presented. I can't think of a better experience to give our visitors than to take them for brunch on Sunday. I have never eaten there at night, since we have to drive from Ogden, so I can't comment on the service or food at night, but I can't imagine that there would be a total turn around from brunch to dinner. I have eaten in fine restaurants all over the country, and this one ranks right up there with the best. I highly recommend it. Pros: Beautiful surroundings, gracious service, excellently prepared food Cons: cost more

Same Old Food and Stuffy Service 11/12/2007

We dined at LaCaille last week for the first time in about two years. What we encountered was the same menu, the same rude servers, the same sloppy presentations, the same noisy atmosphere, the same stuffy attitude, and the same outrageous prices. We have never complained before, but we feel this establishment takes advantage of people by marketing themselves as a high end restaurant, not producing, then charging well beyond the threshold of value. BUYER BEWARE!!!! Pros: The drive up the lane Cons: Food, Service, Prices, etc. more

Never Better 10/23/2007

I've been frequenting this restaurant since the early 80's and it's definitely had a comeback in the past year or so. The food and service have made great strides and are the definitive best in Utah as far as I'm concerned. If you're into wine, which La Caille very much is, even to the extent they keep their own vineyard, make sure to talk to their sommelier who opened me up to some great new labels. I very highly recommend this place if you want to impress, but plan your night around it. \r Pros: Amazing food & service, best wine list, amazing views & ambiance Cons: Wait on busy nights, Price more

HORRIBLE.....LIKE A CARROT ON A STRING 9/25/2007

This place gave us chills when we first saw it........lovely gardens and view by the mountains. The food and service gave us extreme pain during our visit, very poor and thoughtless preparation of our food, very amateur service made us feel belittled. The bill was outrageous. Live and learn........we should have checked out the other reviews of this restaurant before we wasted our evening. It also scared us when we were discussing our horrible experience with friends, they informed us that the LaCaille grounds may be contaminated with arsenic and lead, (check out the EPA superfund web site). We have drank the wine, made from grapes grown there, yuk!!!...... Needless to say..............we will never return. Pros: view, mountains Cons: food, service, price, care, value more

Very dissapointing 7/31/2007

This place has no value. The food was not fresh, the service was below average. The extremely high prices ($120 per person) should demand an unforgettable experience IN EVERY ASPECT, not just the atmosphere. We came hungry and excited, and left dissapointed. We will not be back. Pros: Setting, View Cons: Food, Service, Value more

Beautiful outdoor setting with peacocks, flamingos and wonderful scenery 7/10/2007

I really enjoyed my dining experience at this restaurant. Common sense tells you it will be very costly. If you don't have the money, go to a lower priced restaurant. I must say that the lobster bisque soup isn't as good as some of the restaurants in L.A. Chicago and NY however we live in Utah so it is understandable. We don't have fresh seafood here. The desserts are incredible and the ambience is incredible. I like dinner to be an entertaining experience. Dinner at this restaurant will not be rushed. You should relax and have a few glasses of wine while enjoying the beauty that nature brings. more

Nothing to shout about 1/10/2007

Had a pretty good lamb dish, but the rest of the meal was below average, a horrible male server, (we asked to change to another), a slow, crowded, unrelaxed, noisy 4 hour dinner, however, had a good time looking at the girls. When you look at the standard rating system, (food, service, atmosphere), the restaurant overall is pretty lousy, (I give it about a 3), but their is some great looking women there, some beautiful lights, a good wine list, and they park your car for you.\r The prices are absolutely outrageous when you look at your statement a couple weeks later, however, while your there, after the third or fourth glass of wine, poured by the buxom bar girl, they don't seem that bad.\r I suggest to go there for appetizers or desserts only, with the guys, and take a limo. Pros: the grounds, the lights, the girls Cons: below average food, bad service more

Best night i have had in a long time 12/6/2006

It had been a long time since i had enjoyed my evening at a restaurant. I am picky, i like good food and even better service, and who doesn't right. Well this is truly the place to get it. It has the most stunning settings i have seen outside of Paris. The service was friendly and the food was amazing, i recomend the duck. I would like to list the cons of La Caille, but anything that was negative was not at all bad enough to list, for example, we needed to ask for extra butter. i wonder about the other bad reviews, did we go to the same restaurant??? I truly feel that others should re-visit this place, it is one of the best dinners i have had!!! more

Felt like a victim 12/4/2006

I should have read the previous reviews on this place, \r we had a nasty time from the minute we entered, until the valet gave us our wrecked car. (they deny the dent in the fender).\r Food was very sub-par,\r Service was absolutely horrible (rude and unprofessional),\r Noise level was uncomfortable,\r Prices were outrageous, (for what we recieved, an absolute rip-off)\r Yuk! Pros: costumes on the waitresses, christmas lights Cons: too many to list more

what a joke! 11/21/2006

This place is the most expensive restaurant in the western United States. And, without a doubt, one of the worst. True........beautiful gardens, yet, once inside, watch out! We had outrageously horrible service, food that was cold, and stale. And sat next to a group that looked and sounded like they just came from a rave party. (the head hostess and some of our servers were partying with them all night long). Then came the bill.........$769.00 for 5 of us.........that included 3 bottles of average wine.\r A total disaster!!!\r Please.........go visit the grounds for the eye candy, then turn around and go to burger king. JBA Pros: the grounds Cons: everything else........food, service, noise, price, value, attitude, etc. more

The Emperor Has No Clothes! 7/26/2006

This is a special occasion restaurant and so on our anniversary, my husband and I went to La Caille to ""splurge"". Oh my, what an experience! We were seated at a small table next to a family with screaming kids. Who takes small kids to an expensive French restaurant? Good grief! Our server was painfully slow with drinks and appetizers and we were starving by the time the entree' arrived. Two hundred dollars lighter and a screaming headache later, we left feeling disappointed and were still hungry. To top it off, the waiter spilled on my jacket and didn't offer to have it cleaned...\r \r I had three wishes that didn't come true: I wish we could have been sat at a good table instead of next to the family from hell, I wish the waiter would have cared about our table, and I wish the food had been hot...\r \r With prices as high as they come in Utah, the food, service& ambience must be stellar and it wasn't. Pros: Beautiful grounds Cons: Pricey, slow service more

Too Pricey 7/11/2006

The scenery is beautiful, but the food is so so and the portions are small. There are other fine dining places to choose...in my opinion. Pros: Ambience Cons: Too much money for the food more

Beauty is only skin-deep 3/9/2006

The scenery is breathtaking--no expense is spared. But when it comes to the food, you are better off going elsewhere. The food is bland, more American than French, and can be outdone by any local Red Lobster (I'm not a fan of Red Lobster either). There are places nearly as beautiful with wonderful food and service, both of which are lacking at La Caille. And I'm afraid that the waiters are clueless as far as etiquette is concerned. Gorgeous setting is worth the price, but the food does not match the grounds.\r \r UPDATE: 8/2/07 - Service has improved, and the grounds are as immaculate as ever. Very impressive wait-staff. Filet was good, not incredible (see Ruth's Chris review if you want incredible). Wilted Spinach salad was good. Lobster Bisque was excellent. Bread was good. Irish Coffee was a spectacle to behold. Bananas Foster and Cherries Jubilee tasted horrible, but were fun. Overall, better than previous visits, impressive as ever, worth checking out once or to impress someone that isn't much of a food critic. :) Food still so-so. Pros: Beautiful Grounds, Lights, Pond Cons: Food more

Most Breathtaking Ambiance 12/28/2005

While other reviewers may give a bad review on the service; it is a classic French Restaurant - Service can be quite good if you act with Traditional Ettiquite, and somewhat slow with rudeness or vulgarity. The staff are freindly, attentive & quite knowledgable of fine wines. I had visited in the Wintertime, and I can say without a doubt that this place is a Winter Wonderland. From the Cobblestone driveway to the snow covered trees, it is a magical place to spend an evening. The food was delicious and in classic European portion sizes. Do not expect to get a Claim Jumper sized portion for the price. The meals are fashioned so that you may have a multicourse dinner that spans an evening (about 3 hours) with a glass of wine or two. Pros: Beauty, Ambiance, Delicious courses Cons: Expensive more

Some Enchanted Evening 7/24/2005

From the fog lifting up off the river to the lavender carefully tied to the gift from the gift shop, the shivalry never ended. The food showed careful preparation and was wonderfully presented by candlelight. We were attended to with care but not enough to irritate. Music piped throughout, put a finishing touch making it romantic beyond measure. With the best company I can think of I felt like the princess that I am. It was certainly a breath taking experience not to be fogotten. Pros: excellent food, good service, great atmosphere Cons: I cant of any, sorry, ------ more
