Kumon

My oldest daughter started taking Kumon at the Newton center in 5th grade. Shortly after seeing the stark improvement in my daughter’s math skills, I had my younger daughter, then in grade 2, join the program as well. Under the guidance of Winston and Jane Chiong, my oldest daughter ended the program with a math level 2 years above her grade level. During her partake in the program; I noted how both Jane and Winston never once showed frustration, or weariness while teaching the kids. Their patience in explaining has undoubtedly encouraged the children at the center to continue their studies no matter how difficult it was. My daughter is a graduating senior this year from Waltham High School and will be attending college on a full academic scholarship in the upcoming year. Without the care and attention my daughter received during those years at the Newton center, I am sure she would not have achieved her academic successes, as well as her great marks in her math classes during her high school experience. My daughter now a teaching assistant at the Newton center has learnt how to care and teach with the same educational expertise from the Chiongs’. Even to this day, she claims that her time at the Newton center has helped her invaluably in her grades and she thanks them for their teaching. Jane and Winston’s compassion for wanting their children at their center to learn effectively in a positive atmosphere has produced many happy parents alongside myself and with this review, I want to express my gratitude for not only the Newton center but, as well as for the Chiongs’ utmost care for both of my children. I strongly recommend the Newton center for parents who wish to have their children start their studies early in an optimistic environment. Their effort has helped paved the road for my children’s easier, if not even greater, success for the future. more

My kid didn't receive meaningful instruction. Also, one of the owners is incredibly rude and unhelpful with basic requests and questions. more

Owners are very rude with no respect for customers. Stay away from this center. Same guys own Belmont. There are many other options. Try Waltham or Lexington. more

As a former student of 5 years and employee of 8 years, I can say with confidence that joining Newton Kumon was one of the best decisions I've ever made. As a Newton Kumon student, I enrolled in the Math and Reading programs, progressing from level D to I in Math and level DI to K in Reading. I attribute much of my academic success to the Kumon program, and particularly to the investment of the instructors at this center, Winston and Jane. It is evident that they genuinely care about the students' success, and they are constantly customizing worksheet combinations to fit the needs of each particular child. I got a 2330 on my SATs - a perfect 800 on my math section, and without a doubt, I could not have accomplished such a feat without the strong foundations of mathematics that Kumon and Winston/Jane had taught me. Reading taught me critical reading and analytical writing skills that allowed me to excel on the reading and writing sections of the SATs as well. By no means is this center solely dedicated to building a foundation for standardized testing - I went from a student who could barely make it into the 5th grade honors level math to a student who was consistently in honors math courses in high school, getting straight A's, and got a perfect 5 on my AP Statistics exam. I also differentiated myself as a critical thinker in my literature classes in high school, receiving numerous awards for excellence in those English courses and A's as grades. Overall, Newton Kumon is a great learning environment for both students and parents. Parents are able to keep track of what their kids are learning and succeeding in, and students are able to reap the rewards of their work at the Kumon center, at home, and in school. I've spoken to friends who have went to other centers before, and many of them recount stories of apathetic instructors and lack of academic improvement. Often, I refer them to the Newton center, and they find that the instructor(s) truly do make all the difference. more
