Best Thai in Portland 11/4/2010

My brother had roommates from Thailand and I miss their cooking. This is the next best thing. I'm usually to hungry to wait, but it IS worth it. a great date place. Everything is made to order and I love that. The only server is the husband and he was very nice, We make time to dine here. more

Worth the Wait... if you have the time 10/30/2010

Do NOT go to khun pic's if (a) you are you going out to eat with someone you do not like and will have a hard time chatting with them for a while. (b) you have somewhere to be and want to go someplace fast. Bottom Line: it is worth the wait... if you can wait. A part of me does not understand their business model. They sent three tables away when we were there bc the customers did not want to wait. With one extra kitchen staff and one extra server they could have so much more business. But, alas, they have not changed over the many years that they have been there so it must be a choice. They have the BEST peanut sauce. more

good food. super long wait. 3/1/2010

the food was incredible, but the wait was SO LONG.\r we waiter and hour and a half, got our hot and sour soup, then 30 minutes later, got our other 3 dishes. took forever. we were there for nearly 3 hours. \r the food was incdeible, though. Pros: food. ambiance Cons: prices. portions. LONG WAIT more

Easily the Best Thai in PDX 12/5/2009

As mentioned by other reviewers, Khun Pic is staffed only by a husband-wife team, so patience is a requirement when you eat there. But you will be handsomely rewarded by excellent food. This is the only place I've found in the area that serves REAL Pahd Thai (no ketchup). The only other Thai restaurants that I've been to that match the level of food qualtiy and authenticity is Thai Kitchen in Spokane (also husband-wfe run, and requiring patience when busy), and restaurants in Bangkok. This is the real deal, kids. Pros: Real Pahd Thai, fresh ingredients, made-to-order. Cons: Only one server and one cook, so patience is a must. more

best Thai in Portland 7/21/2009

If you don't know about patience for great quality food, then don't bother going to Khun Pic and then writing a crappy review about it. This is the only place in Portland that you can get authentic, wonderful, priced right food. Khun herself does all the cooking and her husband is the front operation. It's small but they do it great. You've never had such fresh flavors in thai food in portland. Everywhere else you go they use pre packaged vegetables, she cuts everything to order and serves table to table, so yes, it can be a bit slow, but completely worth it. It's amazing how the last reviewer ripped them apart, I have a feeling that there palet for thai food must be the carts downtown. But that's ok, Khun's is a hidden little secret for most of us, so don't bother going if you can't handle the kicked back experience that might not be as quick as your fast food thai. Pros: everything you put in your mouth more

worst restaurant experience ever 11/18/2008

I don't understand how so many people can recommend this place, including Portland Monthly. The food is subpar Thai Food that isn't that imaginative or tasty - I've come to the conclusion that most people in this city just don't know what any ethnic food is supposed to taste like since they don't know any better. The service is painfully slow. Even with the 6 tables they had filled, the one server had no reason to be going as slow as he was. We were in there for 2 hours, on a weekday. And the prices are really high, the portions weren't equal to what we were paying for, and the menu was small and predictable. I will never come here again, and will caution everyone I know from going there. The cute idea of having the place look like someone's living room doesn't make up for the lack of customer service and boring food. \r Pros: nice ambiance Cons: food, service, price, everything else more

Best Thai Food in Portland 9/18/2007

This restaurant is so wonderful. The waiter is great and has remembered me over the years. The food is always top notch. The atmosphere is the best in portland with its beautiful victorian house, golden ceilings, and decorative hardware. Like all the other reviews have said never go here starving or in a hurry. I have spent 3 hours here before which could be frustrating if you didn't know to bring a crossword, good company, and perhaps a snack. The garden in the summertime is unbeatable. I hope this restaurant is around for many years to come. Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Garden Cons: None if you plan properly. more

Thai food beyond expectation! Go midweek. Enjoy the time to converse with those your with. Don't fret. 9/5/2007

Best catfish dish I've ever tasted. Everything had exceptional flavor. Had a wait but listened to my daughters hint to expect to wait and not be in a hurry (go midweek is the key). My wife and I both were extremely pleased. Kick back atmosphere. Waiter was very courteous and warned us that the chef (his wife) made each patrons order from scratch so it might take a while. I would return again with no hesitation. Pros: Best Thai food around-worth the wait. Cons: Can be crowded and slow. more

Tastes like Thailand. 12/29/2006

This is wonderful Thai. I lived in Thailand and while there are some tastes that cannot be replicated without the locally grown foods found there, I have not found a place with tastes so close as I have at Khun Pix's Bahn Thai. (Citysearch will not allow me to say ""p i c ' s"" without the spaces)\r \r It is the perfect place for delicious food, enjoyed. You can sit down, have a conversation, enjoy your food and stay longer just talking. It is wonderful to have a place with such wonderful food and atmosphere where you can take your time without feeling pressured.\r \r This is one of the few places where I *truly* enjoy the experience, the pace of the meal, the personalities of the family - and I always tip very generously here as I feel is right.\r \r I could not recommend it more.\r \r As others said, it is a dining experience, not a place for you to just stop, fill your tummy, pay the bill and begone. If you are in a rush, look elsewhere - that isn't at all what Khun Pix's is about. Pros: Delicious, authentic, atmospheric, unhurried Cons: No cons more

User review by jthaskin 5/26/2006

I lived in Portland during college, found this place my freshman year and used it as my go-to for every special occasion for the following 4 years. Yes, the service is slow - but with only one server, that's not surprising. John (the waiter) quickly had my standard order memorized, and for my final meal there before moving away, Khun Pic came out, we all talked, and they ended up refusing payment for my meal. Go - precisely because the service is slow, and the ambience is amazing, and the food is delicious. Spend one evening making an evening of a meal. Pros: Service, Food, Ambience more

delicious thai food 5/12/2006

It is absolutely delicious thai food i'm so serious! I mean the flavor the aroma the mouth watering taste! It is that good! Pros: delicious food, lovely outdoor seatin, good food more

Exceptional food and wait... 11/14/2005

We arrived at 7:30 on a tuesday night, and had to wait for at least 10 minutes to recieve menus and water...aside from the only server being slammed, once he caught up to us, he was gracious, attentive and hospitable...the food was prepared quick enough as we were the last table seated....flavors are powerful and redolent of lemongrass, where i normally dine...vegetables were dramatically fresh as it seemed they were grown that day for the purpose of being used in this dish...i've never had brussel sprouts in thai food...all in all worht the wait if you're not famished... Pros: quality of food Cons: wait time more

The best atmosphere and food! 11/3/2005

We arrived with 8 people and the server Khun Pic's husband graciously seated us and was always helpful and smiling. The salad rolls were fabulous! One order for 4 people isn't enough so we ordered 6 just so we wouldn't have to share. The Tom Ka was superb as well as the Pad Thai. Khun Pic is a fabulous chef and I will go there again and again. The atmosphere did make me feel warm and happily invited. It does take a long time but come on, its a two man show. Its worth the wait. Pros: atmosphere, food, service Cons: takes a long time, but worth it more

Best Thai Food since Thailand. 8/30/2005

This is the refrain from friends who have been to Thailand; I've gotten used to hearing it. Kuhn Pic is a very special place run by an incredible couple who rebuilt the house first and then built a tremendous following by the relentlessly sublime tastes emanating from the kitchen. You have to look for it the first time, it's snuggled in behind a wonderful garden arch lush with greenery and the best of the season. Once you walk through your evening is already en route to being transformed. Don't expect the norm. Celebrate where you are. It will be magic. Pros: sublime food, like being family more

Enjoyable environment and food 8/19/2005

Thanks for the heads-up on the slow serving - we were prepared when we went on a Friday evening and it took quite some time. But the wait gave us plenty of time to enjoy the lush green romantic patio. After a long wait, the food was especially delicious - their special that night was cat fish in a sweet and sour sauce and it was very yummy. Friendly service. Pros: Ambience, taste Cons: slow more

By far the best! 6/1/2005

Plan to take your time. This isn't a fast place to dine. more

Delicious, charming, unique 2/3/2005

I took 3 out-of-town guests here on a recommendation and we had a fabulous meal. There were only a few other diners so it's possible that I didn't get a true feel for the ""slowness"" that this restaurant is known for. It was so personal, homey and the food was delicious. Can't wait to go back. Pros: very good food, ambience, value Cons: not a "quick meal" more

More than worth the wait 12/29/2004

It's true that the service can be excruciatingly slow. Sometimes you'll be lucky with it, sometimes you won't. If you can deal with that, go! The owners are friendly and sweet people. Their menu is small, but everything on it is exceptiona. Their pad kee mao (drunken noodles) and pad thai are the best I have ever tasted, period, and that includes those made by the owner's sister's restaurant, the equally-fabled Lemongrass. If you don't mind possibly having to wait a long time in a lovely setting, this is the best Thai food you'll get in Portland. Try the salad rolls -- the bit of crispy apple in there along with the mint and fried tofu is amazing with their peanut sauce. I recommend the pad kee mao with chicken or the pad thai with shrimp or chicken. The fried rice is delicious, and her curries are wonderful. Pros: amazing food, atmosphere, amazing food more

Best Thai when you have the time 8/15/2004

I would like to delete my review but Citysearch will not let me so I am replacing my review with this. Pros: Fantastic food, Friendly service, Relaxed atmosphere Cons: , Usually crowded more

Yum 4/2/2004

Great food--best Thai I've ever had. Everything tastes homemade and ""real"", the atmosphere is nice. On the bad side, I like the husband/owner/waiter guy, but I feel like I'm invading their home when I eat there, as he allows his kids often interrupt his service. Oh, one more dislike---no debit cards? Grrr... Pros: Food, Atmosphere more
