  • This beautiful site is located in the extreme northwest corner of the state on BLM property. Irish Canyon takes its name from a trio of outlaws who hid in the gorge after a holdup in Rock Springs. From Irish Canyon, you can hike to the Indian Petroglyphs, Vermilion Falls, Lodore Hall, Browns Park National Wildlife refuge and the Gates of Lodore — a magnificent canyon where the Green River leaves Browns Park and crashes downstream to meet the Yampa River in Dinosaur National Monument. Hiking and mountain biking in the area is wonderful, with many little-used jeep trails.

Driving directions: From Maybell, drive west on US-40 for half a mile. Turn right on Colorado 318, follow it for 41 miles to CR-10N. Go right eight miles to the campground. Seven sites/no fee. Open year round. Bring water. —Nancy Prichard
