The results are worth the sacrifice! 11/26/2010

In 1997 I ran into an old friend while grocery shopping and loved her short hair cut! I had been toying with the idea of cutting off the more than 14 inches of hair I had grown out. This was the ""DO"" I wanted! My friend gave me the information for hairstylist Dana at ""In The Master's Hands"" ( it may have had another name at that time, my over 40yr old memory betrays me at times). I called and scheduled an appointment the same day. To my chagrin, she did not have an opening for another week or so. I was willing to wait.\r Two hours later to my delight, Dana called to say she had had someone cancel and could do my hair that evening. She gave me a very good consultation and suggested I not get a relaxer for another two weeks or so. After I explained to her I wanted to have it all cut off, she agreed to relax it.\r It was beautiful! I learned so much about caring for my own hair between visits and the products available for purchase in the salon are the best! Dana continued to care for my hair until I relocated to Texas in 2001. I searched for a skilled hairstylist in Texas for months and could not find one I was pleased with.\r The first red flag was I notice their clients they serviced did not appear to have the healthy hair I had grown accustomed to seeing in ""In The Master's Hands"". \r After months of searching, disappointing results, sub par service and in some cases, incompetence, I decided I would take the 8 hour drive to New Orleans so that my hair would once again be in the hands of a master stylist! It was worth every dime!\r After a couple of years of driving all night Fridays so I could make an 8 am appointment (every 6 to 8 wks), I decided to go ""natural""!\r \r In 2006, my 14 year old daughter decided she wanted to have her hair relaxed for the first time, there was no doubt that I was going to take the 8 hr drive to take her to ""In The Master's Hands""! We were very pleased! after a couple years of doing this, it grew tiring. Once again I started a search for a stylist in North Texas who's focus was ""healthy hair"". After more than a year of poor service, overprocessing and finally severe damage, we found someone that was ok. It was too much, too little, too late-my daughter had to have her hair cut very short. It was cute; however, I believe this would not have happened if she was still a client at ITMH.\r We have decided this week, that she is returning to ITMH when she has to have any chemical service because we know there expertise in the realm of chemical services and healthy hair, is beyond reproach! \r I am thankful that in six weeks, my daughter will once again be ""In The Master's Hands""! more

Good for the Hair, Good for the Soul!!! 12/15/2009

I have been at ITMH for a little over 9 years now and have not walked away not one time disappointed in my hair. NEVER! Just as ""Lady In The Mall"" I am always receiving compliments and people wanting to know who is my stylist. Just as others say you get what you pay for. To walk away with a head of hair that is healthy, bouncy, and gorgeous is worth the pay any day. It is a family salon with a great atmosphere!! Pros: Experienced & Knowledgeable Stylists who know hair!! Cons: None! more

I Am the Lady in the Mall 12/14/2009

I am one of the women who has been stopped in the mall and asked where I get my hair done. I am also one of the women who has to sneak and scheme to get my ""relaxer"" to stay in for a few extra minutes. Why? Because my stylist says that my hair has a ""natural curl pattern"" and I do not really need a relaxer. Subsequently, she will only lightly touch up the very front edge of my head to appease me. It is so patronizing! \r But, when I walk into the mall, or into church, or into the office at work, or anywhere... I LOVE MY STYLIST! I NEVER, EVER loved my hair until I began going to ITMH 7 years ago. I kept my long hair in a ponytail most of the time and NEVER enjoyed it. The stylists at ITMH are committed to the health and wellness of the individual's hair. They will not give you what you request IF it will cause damage to your hair, even if it costs them your business. Why? I have come to understand that it is because they are trained to repair and beautify hair...not to damage it. \r At ITMH, I was taught all about my hair, how to maximize its' beauty and how to keep it healthy. Haircuts provoke anxiety. But, I learned how to reduce the anxiety by being as clear as possible about EVERY haircut even if it is just to trim an existing one. We always have a brief but poignant discussion prior to the haircut. I am firm and specific about the length I love and want, as well as about the length I do not want. I clarify and make sure that my stylist understands my needs regarding the cut I am getting that day, and I do not engage in conversation while the haircut is going on. \r I am continuously pleased with the attention and professional care given to my hair. My stylist's ""advice"" to forego getting a relaxer is one of the main reasons that I am enjoying my hair so much. It is fuller and easier to style because of its' ""natural curl pattern."" I thought that since I had thin hair, layers would make it look even thinner. My stylist taught me that they actually present the hair as fuller, and once again, she was right. It was not easy giving up control to her, but the results have been irrefutable and my hair gets a lot of unintended attention. The fact that they attend professional development workshops and conferences on an ongoing basis has earned my respect and complete confidence regarding what is best for my hair. \r Clients are pampered with light refreshments, fruit, coffee and/or tea. It does my soul so much good to see a FAMILY of WOMEN working together day in and day out with an obvious love and respect for one another.\r Love My Hair,\r Lady in the Mall \r Pros: Expert, Professional, Friendly, Great Results Cons: 2-Minute ""Retouch"" but I feel the love & I love the results more

allow me to split the difference, ladies 12/13/2009

in defense of the one star rater's comments, i understand where she's coming from. this salon IS expensive, and i, too, experienced a bit of the ""thanks for your input, but i'll cut your hair the way i see fit"" when i went. i also suffered with the roller set scenario. the problem to me seems to be that there is a bit of a one-track mind with regard to styling. they like a lot of stacked up curls, and that is just the way it is. it doesn't matter if you show them a flat, laid down style--they will still curl your hair up big. fortunately, curls are not permanent. (a single night's sleep has taken care of this for me both times.) now...in this salon's defense...your hair will be healthy and shiny. they use great products and are really very skilled with our hair--in every texture and length. i can't fathom them having a chemical mishap because, from what i've seen and experienced personally, they really seem exceptionally well versed in this arena (very attentive, thorough, and professional), so i'm terribly surprised and sorry to hear what happened to the one-star poster. the salon itself is very nicely designed (with separate areas for shampooing, chemical service, drying, and styling), and the staff is exceptionally friendly and approachable. overall, i would recommend the salon with just the two caveats: (1) expect to pay a lot of money and (2) expect to leave with some big, ghetto fabulous, stacked up curls. but hey--some people LIKE that! :-) Pros: knowledgeable staff, quality products and service Cons: limited style vision more

The place to go 4 healthy hair!! 12/12/2009

Any hair type, any condion of the hair, these people know. Clients are educated on how to take care of and maintain their hair. They sell the same products they use. Every new person gets a free consultation before they are seen. Pros: Extremely educated on every aspect of hair and color. more

GREATEST EXPERIENCE EVER! 12/12/2009

I had a great experience at this salon! It's unfortunate that, what's her name, felt this way. I was referred to this salon by a number of individuals, 2 of which were random strangers that I stopped in the mall because their hair was just so bouncy and healthy looking. The other person was in my Math class at XU, who had a short sassy cut with really cute colors (like 3-dimensional or something). \r \r Long story short, I decided to try them. The first visit was a little expensive because my hair was damaged and I needed extra treatments and a cut. But I've been going for like a month now and it runs me about $37 for a wash, cond, style. I have gotten so many compliments on my hair! My hair feels and looks healthier. My mom, aunt, grandma, and sister go now too. We all see separate stylist because we all like to go together. So, in our experience they all know their stuff. They're all related some kinda way, so the team-work is great. And like the other review said, ""you get what you pay for"". I paid for some lady to mess up my hair for 10 years, who was a lot cheaper... but I'll be damned if I ever go back. These people have a very faithful following, me and my family to name a few. \r \r They are experts at what they do, I'm sold! You spend your money at the doctor, but do you also tell them what you need for the health of ""your own"" body or do you respect their knowledge? Same concept. Pros: PROFESSIONAL &THEY KNOW THEIR STUFF!!! Cons: Uhhh?? more

THE ONLY PLACE I'D EVER GO TO GET MY HAIR DONE RIGHT!!!!! 12/10/2009

I have been going to ITMH since 1997 and wouldn't let anyone else in my head.(PERIOD). The only people who have a problem with this salon are those who have no concept of how healthy hair should look and feel. As far as the price for service.... you get what you pay for.... QUALITY QUALITY QUALITY Pros: BEST STYLISTS IN THE CITY. more

Avoid, avoid, avoid 8/7/2009

The most traumatizing hair experience of my life. I could write a book, but I'll be brief: 1.) said no layers, but in actuality got layers (and a crazy look when I said no layers please), 2.) said no to roller set, was cajoled into it because I was told it would be healthier for my hair, but ended up looking like combination between Ronald McDonald and Bea Arthur, 3.) relaxer burn so bad I was almost in tears the next day and considered going to the doctor, 4.) asked for a certain style and the stylist refused to do it (Here's where I started to wonder whose hair is this anyway? The owner of the head to which it is attached or the stylist I paid over $100 to style it ?). Long story short, another stylist had to give me the style I wanted. She actually did an amazing job. So, let's review: the most traumatizing (and one of the most expensive) hair experiences of my life happened here. I have layers in my hair that I don't want and it will take months to grow out. I'm out $118 for my troubles. My hair actually looks nice now, but I went through HELL to get it to look like this. This is a cautionary tale, and a sad one. I would have loved to give this salon my continuing business and I seriously considered it after the second stylist did such a fantastic job, BUT the pain (physical and, yes, emotional- I felt so hideous) I had to deal with are enough to keep me away. Pros: Nicely designed salon, professional (to an extent) staff Cons: Just about everything more
