Fun store with great ideas 5/22/2010

I have been to this store once and I am surprised that people talk about things being overpriced. First of all, this is a business, and someone is trying to make a profit. Is'nt America all about capitalism and enterprenuership? Secondly, when looking for furniture or anything else, it is the customers responsibility to check on prices and do their research before buying anything. Once the purchase is done, complaining about the price is really not fair. When I walked into the store, and was browsing, the owner spoke with me very politely and I told her I was there just to browse and was not going to buy anything till my husband accompanied me. She was very accepting of that and she told me to ask her if I had any questions. I personally felt that all the furniture is of very good quality, and she has excellent pieces. I did feel that the price was higher than some other places but this is the Pearl. We pay for the ambience and the atmosphere, the pleasure of shopping in that area. Pros: beautiful, good quality furniture and art. Cons: high pricing more

Great Saleswomen, Good Values, Feels Good 11/24/2008

I love this store. The sales staff are so down to earth. I tend to go overboard and when I was redecorating and picking from so many of the amazing things that are there, they were clearly helping me make rational choices rather than padding their commissions. I was out of mind excited when i was shopping and I realized later that they were really considerate and helpful. Such great variety and the prices are cheaper than they look, don't be intimidated. Pros: location, service more

Take responsibilty 11/2/2008

I do not usually write reviews, I felt the need to also comment on the latter reviews in complete defense of Lisa, the owner of Hunt and Gather. I, too ,am a business owner, I know the struggles of trying to find good ,honest employees and what it is like to have an employee betray your trust,,,,, or worse. When a person goes shopping in the Pearl district , they are aware that they will probably be spending more than going to a Marshalls. That is part of the experience. It is very frustrating to read these reviews that are obviously written in anger and vengeance... I often find the people who complain the most take no responsibility for their own actions. If you can find a sofa cheaper somewhere else, than go do it. Dont whine about it later. As far as I know it is still a free country. No one made you pull out your wallet and purchase. The fact that you thought someone whom you in effect ""hired"" to help you design your home tried to be your friend says it all. She is a business owner who has had to deal with people just like you. You want quality and good service yet you do not want to pay for it. It would be a great day if everyone had to try to open and sustain a business in this day and age. Its ok not to have been happy with the quality of a purchase, That is understandable and should be addressed but that was not the case in any of the reviews. Stick to the the facts.....and be fair. more

Ethics Beyond Reproach 11/1/2008

I am writing this post to call out athena901, retailorinthehood and oceans1157. Sincerely people, grow up and stop blaming others for your individual inadequacies and personal challenges. This kind of behavior is unwarranted, unprofessional and unethical.\r \r Hunt and Gather has been a destination landmark in Portland going on 10 years now. Small businesses like Hunt and Gather do not sustain without delivering superior service levels and quality deliverables at competitve prices. That being said, the business continues to thrive and endure, even with this challenging economic turmoil we presently live in. \r \r The public should be aware that the writers of the aformentioned posts are spineless former employees with nothing better to do than conspire against a reputable long standing pioneer in the Pearl District. Termination of their employment within a few months of each other was entirely warranted and completely justified. These attempts to compromise the health of Hunt and Gather and slander the owner directly are unfounded and entirely full of innacurate lies. Legal recourse is presently being pursued. \r \r Please do not pay heed to the remarks represented in the aforementioned posts. Hunt and Gather's owner and dedicated staff are extremely service oriented and knowledgeable. As a loyal customer and friend, I have personally witnessed the creative capability and definitive guidance that this business provides. Come to Hunt and Gather and see for yourself, the unparalleled design, style, quality and value that Portlanders have enjoyed for years. more

DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS BUSINESS 10/2/2008

The owner of this business has no integrity. She routinely prices items beyond the MSRP. She sold me a rug at almost twice the MSRP, all the while pretending to be my friend. At my home consultation she pushed items for sale on the floor rather than what would have been best for my home. I have seen items from Marshall's for sale in her store marked up in price. One of the artists who had their art for sale on commission at Hunt & Gather told me she tried to cheat her. She gave me a quote for a custom sofa that turned out to be substantially more than the quote I received for the same sofa at Sofa, Table, Chair. Once she takes the order and has your money, don't expect to hear from her. The employee turn over rate seems to be rather high, so don't expect to be greeted as a loyal customer, either. more

Manipulated and Deceptive 7/29/2008

This store, despite its interior, has manipulated and deceived customers for years. This is entirely the oneness of the owner who proclaims her niche in the home furnishings market of being contemporary, knowledgeable and a supposed honest business woman. Absolutely a falsehood. Prices are inconsistent, quality of pieces are failing miserably in comparison to other retailors in the neighborhood, and to say customers are deceived is being kind. After having shopped this space two different time, I was shocked at the declaration of sale: As I was considering a SouthCone piece, saw it listed at one price then in a few months later, see it as a sale item with the original price raised. I contacted Southcone directly to recieve further information that as not only did the owner raise the price above MSRP but was also declaring SouthCone to be sustainable in its entirety which is another lie. I personally witnessed the owner lying about the construction of an upholstered piece which I had researched elsewhere. Unbelievable this woman is in business! Her staff has always been gracious and knowledgeable but amazingly enough the owner has no regard for customer service or intergrity. Boycott this store forever! more

Poor customer service and treatment 7/3/2008

I am glad that City Search exists so that the customer has a voice. The two times I have tried to shop in Hunt and Gather I was drawn to the good taste of the floor samples. However once you step in the door the experinece with the staff is snippy and ""put upon"" at best. The first time while browsing in the fabric area I was told to leave the area as they wanted to use that space or something. I just walked out as I was too shocked to say much else. Then I tried again, this time I had to deal with some young person who knew nothing about the furntiure and when I tried to take a picture of a small side table (to see it in my home if the style would go) I was told to stop taking pictures or I would have to leave. I asked why, as I have shopped in New York, Palm Beach, CHicago Dallas and LA in the best and most unique stores and no one has ever told to not take a picture! Then they said they needed to protect their ""design"". I was laughing at that point as really this is just a store with overpriced furniture . I think the owner has an inflated view of her talents and may want to travel outside of Portland sometime to see that in the big world her store is just average. So I left the snooty floor help and vowed to not shop here ever. However if you want to get free design ideas, by all means go there, just buy somewhere else. Pros: variety of style Cons: snippy, snooty service more

I would never give themmy business again ... 2/22/2007

The first thing you have to know is that this store makes it a common practice to charge above the manufactureres suggested retail price. Once is a fluke - twice a mistake but by the fifth time I am sure it is there standard practice. I was charged $80 more for a picture that I found down the street. Then on a hunch I did a search on a bench and foud that the quote the owner Lisa gave me was $300 more then the MSRP. This lead me to question all of my purchases and the end result was that I overpaid for 2 candles, 4 picture frames, an upolstered chair, a metal bed and 3 lamps ... ranging from 30 - 50% over retail. In our world paying retail is what you want to avoid but nobody pays above retail for anything ... retail is designed to be the highest price point for these items. When confronted Lisa refused to cancel my furniture order or to compensate me for her terrible business practices. To add salt to the wound since I was such a good customer she was giving me a 10% discount on everything I bought. Well, 10% less on something being overcharged by 40% is no special favor. Bottom line is the store is beautiful and has beautiful things but you can find tons of catalogs, internet stores and other local Portland stores who will sell you the same items for the correct price ... often under the MSRP. I advise you to steer clear of this store. Pros: Great selection and beautiful items Cons: Market up nigher then MSRP so everything in the store is a rip offffffff!! more

Holy Grail for home decor options! 3/23/2005

Simply another world inside! the options are tremendous and beyond vast: the bedroom in the back has a cloth ceiling!!! Furniture options are high end and of beautiful quality. Trinkets and inexpensive and creative: bought a few candles and art objects for my anniversay and the cost for quality was surprisingly cheap. Staff was very up to date with trends and offered an in home consultation for my color patterns to match: simply can't get better than that. a must to roam the show floor and dream. Will surly go back for couches. Pros: variety, quality, price points more

frustrated 9/10/2004

I was very happy when I picked out my dining table and chairs but was very disappointed with the customer service. My furniture was delayed by 3 months (told 2 months and it arrived 5 months) but I was never called, no one ever returned my phone calls, and the owner did not take any responsibility for the delay or poor customer service when I talked to her in person. There are plenty of other stores in town with better customer service. more

incorrect expectations 7/9/2003

i was pulled in by a friend who told me about getting a custom couch: thought there's no way i could afford it. was i SO wrong. not only did i find my dream couch but the owner held my hand in picking out my own fabric for the couch AND for the pillows. the cost was the SAME as the others that i had found at the chain stores. shocking. the owner even offered to come to my house to help me with my 7 other rooms that need decorating. Pros: variety, knowledge, options more
