Howard Beach Animal Clinic P C: Steven R Weinstein, DVM

Dr. Weinstein only cares about money and NOT your pets. I took my dog in for a simple case of diarrhea and loss of appetite. After negative bloodwork and an exam performed by his associate, Dr. Iva Porkorny, they prescribed Flagyl which they claim is the only drug that kills Gardia. My dog was fine for 3 days then suddenly had a seizure on the 4th day. He just turned 10 years old and has no history of seizure or neurological disorder. After my own research I discovered that seizures are indeed a side effect of Flagyl and that this drug is NOT approved by the FDA for use in dogs but is routinely used in veterinary practice. I called Dr. Weinstein on the phone and he asked me to bring in the dog. I did and his associate Dr. Peter Roufail saw my dog. He didn't agree that Flagyl was the cause but didn't rule it out as a possibility. He recommended more bloodwork to check his white blood cell count and a thyroid panel. They saved the life of my puppy who swallowed a string and required serious abdominal surgery, because the string got stuck in his intestines and he didn't eat for 4 days. All doctors were very friendly and helpful, and Dr.Weinstein didn't charge me for xrays and some other procedures, though surgery was quite expensive, but you will find such prices (usually higher) everywhere. the only disadvantage of the clinic is a waiting time. IN MY OPINION DR. WEINSTEIN IS AT BEST A HALF WAY DECENT VET AT LEAST. OVER THE LAST 20 YEARS I TOOK MY DOGS THERE WITHOUT INCIDENT UNTIL I HAD A DOG ABOUT 8 YEARS AGO WHO HAD GOTTEN BIT BY ANOTHER DOG WITH MINOR SCRAPES AND A PUNCTURE. DR. WEINSTEIN TOOK 5 MINUTES TO LOOK AT HIM GAVE HIM A CREAM TWO DAYS LATER HE DIED AT 2 YRS OLD. I HAD AND INDEPENDENT NECROPSY DONE SAYING IF HE WOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN INTRAVENOUS ANTIBIOTICS HE WOULD HAVE MADE A FULL RECOVERY. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT SINCE HAS BECOME MORE AND MORE SUCCESSFUL HE SPENDS LESS AND LESS TIME WITH THE ANIMALS AND HIS PRICES HAVE GONE UP (SO LESS TIME MORE MONEY). I AM NOT SAYING HE IS A HORRIBLE VET, BUT I'VE BEEN TOLD STORIES BY AT LEAST TEN PEOPLE THAT MONEY SEEMS TO HAVE TAKEN OVER CRITICAL CARE FOR HIS PATIENTS. I agree with this comment because I know from experience that ANY veterinarian that is affiliated with ANY pet stores, then they are in bed together. This means that the pet store pays off the vet to say the pet is healthy NO MATTER WHAT. Do you think a pet store wants an "ethical" vet? No way because an ethical vet with morales could not in good faith pass off these poor gentically defective and very sick animals as healthy. Weinstein and his cronies get PAID to say these puppies and kittens are healthy. Half the time, they keep them in their hospital for free or they just keep them healthy for enough time so your buyers contract runs through. My exboyfriend use to work at Howard Beach animal hospital and there are despicable things that go on there besides Weinstein trying to pick up ANYTHING that has legs (females) even the young girls that work there. Stay clear of the joint, its a hazard. The staff is disgusting and the Doctors all suck. They dont care about the animals, they care about how many they can rip off. My ex warned me about the place but I didn't listen to him. The girls at the front desk are little snot noses and the other "kids" working there practically drag my dog in by the collar as she slid on the damn floor. he has kids working there so he probably doesn't have to pay them no more than minimum wage. I didn't like the way he was eyeballing me as I tried to tell him my dog was coughing. Gave me the creeps. I left there feeling dirty and won't go back. more

I have seen a lot of reviews here and the problem is that more of the people with bad experiences are posting comments and not enough of the people with good experiences are. I have been taking my dog to HBAC for 7 years and just recently had and emergency situation where my dog was bleeding internally. Dr. Weinstein performed emergency surgery and was completely communicative to me and my husband throughout the whole ordeal. He told us the facts and treated my dog with compassion and utmost care. The girls at the front were very understanding to all my concerns. Dr. Weinstein is the greatest....don't listen to the haters. more

Not all the negative reviews are as true as they seem. I feel most people have such harsh things to say about Dr. Weinstein is because he is a very honest man. My complaint is why are appointments a most, but they are never keep. I made a appointment at 10 o'clock, got there 15 mins early and was not seen till 12 o'clock. I can not speak negative about the staff, but I can speak highly about one of the girls I dealt with. Her name was Samantha. She was super sweet and so helpful. She took the time out to explain the medication to me for my puppy. And even took time to answer any questions I had that were not related to the medication, but as simple as what I should be feeding him. For that alone I will go back to the Howard Beach Animal Clinic. more

i went to see ivan and his english bulldogs. his quality and experience impressed me.i purchased my fem english bulldog from him.i took it to the howard beach animal clinic.the staff was very friendly and the different doctors i saw were great.my experience was great and recommended 2 other friends for french bulldogs i only have good things to say about ivan and the howard beach animal clinic. i would def recommend both more

whenever I go to howard beach animal clinic I always request to be service by Dr. Weinstein or Dr. PETA spelled like the animal organization PETA. The other staff there act as if they are fresh out of school and they are still practicing . And the girls at the front desk are arrogant Non-professional Bitches with a capital B. And you would think that with all these negative reviews that Dr.Weinstein would care enough about his customers that he would address these girls ,and explain to them what the word Professional means but no these Bitches act as if they own the Clinic and the customers need them . Extremely dissatisfied with the Howard Beach Animal Clinic. \r \r I was referred to this clinic from the pet shop where my dog was purchased - I had some sort of 5 year health guarantee, but it was voided because I failed to bring my dog in for specified preventative care. I didn't know this until I realized that my bills were getting a lot higher than the first year visits. I was finally given an explanation during my last visit of $200. No notices for check ups, no calls, nothing. \r \r The animal clinic is very busy, so I've avoided going during peak hours. It has helped because of the limited parking. But that's the least of my frustrations.\r \r The girls at the front desk - in person and on the phone- are unhelpful, unapproachable, unprofessional, and extremely rude. I was a customer for an number of years against all reviews, but he is a poor excuse of a vet who not only killed my dog because of ignorance, arrogance and lack of know how but also lied about the dog's condition.... for the love of god do NOT GO there, find another vet... as a matter of fact stay away from Queens vets period.... I can assure you that ALL negative reviews are quite true.... Ok I used to go to Dr. Weinstein when i was going there he was very nice he even drove me home once. Once i thought my dog was sick and he wasnt Dr. Weintein refused to charge me. But the staff are terrible with customers they treat you very badly thats why i stopped going. very nasty. i take my dog to the human society they love my dog and I know they are there for my dog.They are cool and run by appt.So in all fairness Dr. Weinstein was very good to me.staff can go fly a kite off a bridge more

I have known Dr. Weinstein since I was 10 years old and got my first Pet dog. He has always been compassionate and caring when it came to my pets through out my life. It is sad to say that not all the staff but the majority that work the desk are unfortunately nast and obnoxious. I have seen other vets in his office who as I noticed in the other comments posted here are inexperianced as well as have terrible bedside manner. What I do is if my pet needs to go to the vet I make sure the appt is with Dr. Weinstein and no one else. Dr Weinstein if you read these posts maybe you should consider checking into their validity. Dont allow your 20 years of service and good reputation to be tarnished because of volume and workers as well as vets with bad attitudes. i have been going to dr weinstein for 17 years,i have 12 cats,i have never had a problem,i would highly recommend his services-he takes care of your pet like his own more

First off, the receptionists are totally obnoxious and need a reality check, I think they forget they are working in a vet's office and not in Saks Fifth Avenue. As for the vets, the female vet is very nice, however, Dr. Weinstein is not the sharpest tool in the shed. I think they overdrugged my dog who went in for a spay and when I brought her to another vet I was told that her incision was abnormally large and there was no reason for them to do that. A friend of mine who brought her dog in for a simple mole removal had the worst suture job done EVER. The wound opened up 3 times that day and she had to drive all the way from Whitestone to Howard Beach THREE times to have an unsympatheic, apathetic Dr. Weinstein say "I'm normally a good Doctor, don't know what happened here". When he took her dog to the back he was crying in pain as I'm sure by this time his anesthesia wore off and he was able to feel them sewing up his open wound. my experiences at the Howard beach animal clinic is horrendous cause the staff are a bunch of stuck up bitches that i ever saw in my whole life i have seen mistreated dogs example i saw a dogs nails being clipped where the person was choked hold on the dogs and cursing at the dogs and cats too and i experience at the kennel bad services i would never take any my dogs there again.... more

Dr. Weinstein is horrible! The only thing the man cares about is money. He mistreats all the clients and animals. He should be shut down! The place is disgusting and the girls behind the desk are miserable. Do NOT go there! more

Late one night during a Holiday weekend my dog had (what I didn't know at the time) a anal gland rupture. He was incredibly uncomfortable and crying. I had no clue what to do. I called the emergency number and left a message. NO ONE CALLED ME BACK! I told the operator that it was an EMERGENCY but come Monday morning, I hadn't heard from anyone, including Weinstein. I took my dog in as soon as possible and there was a young rookie vet-the only doctor on staff for the day. I left my dog for a emergency surgery and she said they would call when I could pick him up. The ditzy staff girls called early and hung up without leaving a message. When I tried to call back, they weren't picking up. Come to find out they had decided to stop taking calls so they could lock up early. I rushed down there in a panic and received my dog with a butchered, cut and bloodied rear end-they literally shaved him down to his bare skin and he ended up with razor burn! She then proceeded to tell me SHE HAD NO CLUE more

My shep mix went swimming in Jamaica Bay and ran into a broken beer bottle. He severed a vein and I took him to a vet in Brooklyn. Two days later it was evident the wound was not healing properly and I took him to Howard Beach. Dr. Weinstein is the most intelligent, caring and concerned vet I have ever come across. Needless to say, under his care the leg healed flawlessly. I sometimes go to another vet in Manhattan Beach, but I always come back to Dr. Weinstein. He is a great diagnostician. Don't settle for one of his associates and put up with the staff. Always be polite and considerate and that will go a long way with dealing with the minutia. more
