Unprofessional!! 9/4/2010

My partner and I have been getting our Wheaten Terrier groomed by Chad for about a year and have never been fully satisfied with her cut. We like her cut with the traditional Wheaten taper on the legs, but a puppy cut around the face. Although we don't like the "show cut" on her face, which includes a fall that obstructs her vision, we don't like her face cut super short. We opt for something fluffy and full around her muzzle. Having explained this to Chad, we usually say "remember, don't cut her face too short" when dropping her off. On several occasions, including the most recent grooming, Chad has had a hard time understanding this concept. He sheers the top of her nose and between her eyes down and cuts around her long muzzle until she looks like a weasel - the exact OPPOSITE of what we requested. In our most recent encounter, I called and made and appointment for a full-groom, haircut, bath, nails, etc., and my partner dropped our dog off and returned home. I then asked him to call Chad and remind him, yet again, not to trim the face to short. Somehow Chad took this to mean trim ONLY the face, an absurd and non-sensical misunderstanding. We picked up our girl and her face was cut but the rest of her fur was still 4 inches long, making her head appear far too small for her body. Confused, I called Chad the next day and said that her body was left long and inquired as to why. He proceeded to argue that my partner asked that only the face be cut and as a result he charged him 60 dollars for a trim rather than 75 for a full cut. Chad said that he could cut the rest for another 60 dollars. Frustrated by a year of unsatisfactory service, I called around for open appointments at other groomers to fix Chad's mistake. But, each groomer assured me that any groomer would gladly fix this error without charge, and that Chad should do the same. Unable to secure an appointment elsewhere on such short notice, I hesitantly returned to Chad, who trimmed her body (without the Wheaten taper on the legs) and sheared her face once again. When I picked her up, I asked that I be able to pay the difference, 15 dollars, for a full groom, but that I not be charged twice for an error on his end. He then proceeded to yell at me about how there was constant miscommunication and that this was not his fault. I told him that I was in the room when my partner asked him not to over trim her face and anything else he heard was clearly his own error. He then proceeded to lie, telling me that he was frustrated with my partner, whom he typically deals with, because he is always dropping our dog off hours too early and demanding walk-in appointments, when in fact my partner has merely asked Houndry staff whether it was okay to drop her 15 minutes early to which they obliged, and merely asked whether he had any walk-ins available, to which Chad obliged. My response was, if you can't take the appointment, simply say so. Don't take the appointment and then get angry at us later. When I informed Chad that we would no longer be using his services he told me that I should speak to which ever groomer we decide to work with because although he has never had a difficult time with me, when he speaks to my partner, he "just stands there, like aduhhhhhhhh," mocking my partner as though he is dumb. I said "please do not mock my partner, that is beyond rude. Just charge my card so I can get out of here," to which Chad responded, "I sure can charge you, the full 75!!" I have to say that I will NEVER return to the Houndry for any services. I cannot understand how ANY business owner could conduct themselves in this way. more

Great Dog Day Care 3/10/2009

We tried several other dog daycares in the city and this is by far the best we found. Friendly staff, nice facilities. And I'm a fan of the cage-less boarding which I think is less stressful for the dog. more

Not much selection 2/4/2009

There is not a whole ot to choose from in this shop. It has a ton of potential but I live in the neighborhood and I never recieve anything from them as far as discounts or ad's. I prefer traveling a few blocks away to 4Legs...now that is a pet store! Cons: Not much to choose from! more

Very Happy with the Care and Attention at The Houndry 10/8/2008

Excellent facility! The staff is really friendly and well informed about dog health and behavior and the facility is very clean. My dog participates in daycare here a few times a week and when she comes home, not only is she happy and tired but also she doesn't stink - unlike when we've used other places in the past. I know she's in good hands and having a blast while at The Houndry because she gets excited every time I mention the name and she's happy when I pick her up. Thanks for taking such good care of my baby! Pros: Great staff, clean, convenient. more

Great Boarding! 9/2/2008

We have used The Houndry for boarding several times. Bailey was treated like the queen she thinks she is. Wonderful facility for playing and having fun with other dogs. The staff is very attentive and Bailey always came back healthy and happy. We'll definitely be back!! more

In Response to Another Fake Review 7/7/2008

This is Jack Stanley, Owner of The Houndry. "ONENEVER" has chosen to give us a 1-star review without ever using our services. According to his other review, "his guy" is actually "his girl", a Maltese named Jill. But he's probably just confusing his fake CitySearch identities. He claims to have "found his place" at Pooch over a year ago, so why the sudden urge to review us? And if their services are so good, and you're so happy, then why do they only deserve a 3-star "Average"rating? Here is why: this is merely the latest in the continuous pathetic attempts by another facility owner to manipulate review sites to create a facade of quality for his own business and steer unknowing dog owners through his doors. He is correct in saying that dog owners should look around--we always encourage people to check out their options for dog care. There are a number of quality dog care providers in Chicago, he just isn't one of them. If you use review sites as a guide, be warned that you should look closely at what you read. Be very suspicious of any business that receives clusters of glowing reviews, most often by "clients" for whom this is their first and only review. Especially when they are supposed long-time clients. The advantage to Yelp is it allows messaging between reviewers, meaning you can contact other Yelp users for real feedback and opinions. Not so here. Also, CitySearch openly encourages businesses to offer "financial incentives" to clients who post positive reviews, a practice we find questionable and in direct contradiction with the purpose of an objective review site. Finding proper care for your dog is extremely important, and we always recommend that people talk to other dog owners who have first-hand experience. We greatly appreciate how our clients willingly spread our name through word of mouth--The Houndry staff work incredibly hard to provide the best dog care possible, and we will always strive to improve. more

Not Happy 7/6/2008

I saw this place, nothing exciting. Dogs are upstairs all day in a room. No windows or out time. I'd check out others before I use this place. Pros: 2 blocks from my house Cons: I need more then a padded room for my guy, no outside or chance of seeing daylight more

nice on the outside, too small on the inside 3/2/2008

I am a former costumer. I do agree that the owner (Jack Stanley) and the staff are polite. Unfortunately, the place is relatively small and the doggies are packed in on their busy days which creates more opportunities for the dogs to scuffle. There have been several incidents where dogs went home with punctures. Also, as polite as the staff is, they are young and inexperienced. Swearing at the pups is common, sometimes I could even hear them. The place could be better with a mature staff and better management. Pros: cage-free, young energetic staff Cons: too many dogs, small, inmature staff more

Fantastic Cage-Free Dog Boarding 12/28/2007

This is a wonderful place, staffed by diligent and knowledgable people who go the extra step to make sure your dog is cared for properly. I have 2 dogs, one who is social but very attached to me, and one who is extremely afraid of people and not really into boarding/day care of any sort. After touring 8 other boarding facilities throughout the city, this was the only place I could leave my dogs without fear that they would be lost in the shuffle. While I was away, the staff not only took my calls every day, but they were always patient, honest and I could tell that they really were concerned for how each of my dogs was faring during my absence. The dogs came back smelling and looking great. I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone who has to leave town. If you board your dogs at The Houndry, you can be assured that they will be well-cared for and loved while you are away! Pros: Staff is amazing, product selection is great Cons: Parking, but not too bad! more

Great Place! 8/13/2007

I can?t say enough good things about this place. My dog loves it! We?ll walk in and she immediately gets excited and wants to run upstairs to the large play area. The staff is great and very accommodating. I love the fact that you can buy packages that do not expire and you are not required to have your dog attend a minimum amount of days per week like other places. Also, this place is very clean! I totally trust the staff and feel very comfortable leaving my dog with them. I would recommend them to everyone!! Pros: Clean environment, Price, Staff Cons: none more

Perfect place for our puppy 6/19/2007

We were thrilled to find a place for our puppy to stay while we were away. We had just moved to the city and were very nervous to leave her. The staff was extrememly welcoming and made us feel very comfortable leaving Nevin there. We were most impressed by the fact that there is always someone with the dogs whether just playing with them or petting them. There was no need to have Nevin come back barking- she had constant love and attention. We're thrilled to have found a home away from home for our puppy. Pros: friendly staff, clean facilities, lots of love for each dog more

A Home Away from Home 4/11/2007

The Houndry is wonderful! Bailey loves to go, is always eager to get there and very happy to see the staff. She loves playing in the spacious play room and hanging out with the other dogs. The staff is very knowledgeable of proper care and nutrition and we feel very confident knowing she's getting excellent care. No cages, no misbehaving dogs, no excessive barking, etc...... We're excited we've found a home away from home for her. more

Finally! The perfect boarding place. And we looked for 2 years. 4/7/2007

I'm an 8 y/o lovely (natural) blonde lab/shepherd mix. Me and my human daddy moved to Chicago 2 years ago. My daddy has put off taking a vacation without me for 2 years because he couldn't find a place he thought would take care of me in a manner befitting the love of his life (me). And he checked EVERY dog boarding facility out in Chicago. Nothing seemed just right. I even tried some of these places out myself for a few hours. Daddy knew something was wrong when I'd refuse to go back in a second time. And slowly the list of prospects dwindled to none. It seemed the more he found out the less likely it seemed he'd ever take a vacation somewhere more than a 3 hour car ride away. He especially wanted a cage free place as he didn't think I'd like being behind bars. And no, I wouldn't. I did that once for 6 weelks in a shelter and it just isn't the lifestyle I was looking for while waiting to be rescued. But wait. There IS a tail wagging ending. Just when he was about to give up he heard there was a new place that had recently opened up: The Houndry. So we went over there one Sunday. We met the owners and all the people who work there. Everyone was beyond nice. They all took the time to sit down to find out exactly what it was that we were looking for. This place is so inviting and nice and wonderful and the people who work there treat me as nice as my daddy would if he ran a dog hotel just for me. I liked it so much I started going over to the Houndry once in a while for a few hours at a time just to try it out. I couldn't wait to go back. Everything about this place is just perfect. It isn't crowded. It's clean. I get brushed and my my belly gets rubbed and I get free treats and I get to speak all I want without being told I have a big mouth. And at night when it's bed time all us doggies sleep in a big pile with whoever it is from The Houndry who's doing the sleepover. So we're never alone or abondoned. And now daddy can go on vacation. Pros: Genuine loving care and high level of standard. Cons: None. more
