Best

Hominy Grill has it all... great food, great atmosphere, great prices and a friendly staff. HG is off the beaten path which makes it feel more ""small town"" than tourist attract...

Worst

This morning was my last visit to the Hominy Grill. While the food was edible, Ive been much happier with breakfast at a Waffle House. Two slices of bacon, $2.95, nothing specia...

Yum Yum 12/18/2007

Hey Ya'll. OMG the corn bread is lip-smacking good!! Delicious soups and specials! I love this place...yum yum in my tum tum. Pros: Cornbread Cons: if you want to set & talk private like gossiping...the tables are a little close so MarthaMae might hear you. So Be Sweet!!! more

My favorite restaurant in Charleston! 9/25/2007

I love Hominy! This is the one place I make sure to take guests when they visit. The food is amazing--high class southern food. You MUST try the grits when you go. My favorite is the shrimp and grits. My girlfriends are fans of their double-cut bacon. My guy friends are known to have ordered two dishes each because they can't make up their minds. Everything there is delicious. This is one place not to miss, but be ready for a wait before sitting at a table! Pros: Food, ambiance Cons: You will have to wait for a table more

So tasty, So friendly, so fresh, soooo good 8/7/2007

While visiting Charleston last spring my family and I were hopping around doing the tourist stuff, before we knew it lunch hour was almost over. We headed over to Hominy and were pleasantly greeted, seated and treated to the best food and southern hospitality there is. We all ordered lunch and then of course, dessert. DO NOT SKIP DESSERT HERE!! Everything was wonderful, so much that I bought the cookbook and make the Buttermilk Pie at home. The staff was exellent, the food was unforgettable and the atmosphere relaxing. If you are visiting Charleston, you must go. It is one of those places that the locals do not skip just because there are tourists around. Who in their right mind would skip out on this place??\r Go! You will love every crumb. Pros: DESSERTS Cons: none, zip more

Comfort anytime 1/4/2007

On a quiet afternoon in early December, my fiance and I stopped by for our last lunch before driving back to DC. The place was empty aside from 2 tables that were on dessert, so we took our time perusing the menu and the waitress sensing our apprehension and the obvious signs of an ""out-of-towner"" came over and explained some of the specials that I had been straining my neck sideways to read. I went for the Shrimp creole with okra, peppers & ham in a rich tomato sauce over grits with a side of fried okra (can't get enough of it) and my fiance had the Fried green tomato BLT - we both ordered Sweet tea (which was just perfectly sweetened and not sugar with tea flavoring like some other places). No sooner did we order then the place just filled up - both in the inside and the patio outiside (it was in the 60's - got to love Charleston weather). The meals came out and I don't think I ever wolfed down food like that before - tears came to my eyes with every bite - brillantly seasoned, just a hint of heated spice and the side of okra was a meal in itself. I kept picking at the fried tomato in my fiance's sandwich, the remoulade on it was tasty. We had to order dessert after all that - finally after much pomp, I had my piece of Buttermilk Pie, which oddly reminded me of DC's Vidalia's reknown Lemon Chess Pie but way creamier. We also got the Hot Bread Pudding and I've got to tell you that short of the Gumbo Shop in New Orleans, that it was the real deal. The place might be a converted barbershop but they know what they're doing in there. The service was supreme and the atmosphere had no airs about it. We'll be back when we move down there in 3 weeks...yes we will. more

Great Grits 9/18/2006

I had the Grouper with baked cheese grits and greens for Dinner. Great lemon buttery sauce with the grits. Nice cozy atomosphere. A little pricey for dinner, maybe try lunch. Stay away from the chocolate cake. Hmm the frosting was good but the cake itself kept crumbling off that I couln't get a nice grip with my fork. Not enjoyable.Very average, nothing spectacular at all about it. more

Overrated - Just OK 4/12/2006

We live a block away from this highly touted restaurant and have been several times because our guests have always heard of it and want to try. Honestly, I'm not a big fan. The food is only average, there are better southern restaurants and at a lower price, unfortunately most aren't downtown. My biggest gripe is that there's nothing on the menu to really get excited about, everything is just kind of plain. With that being said the service has always been friendly and the atmosphere is just what you would expect. If you're craving southern food, Boulevard Diner, Gullah Cuisine, and Salt and Pepper in Mount Pleasant all have better food. Pros: location, atmosphere Cons: overrated, dry biscuits, boring menu more

Thumbs Up! 3/25/2006

On a recent visit to Charleston, my husband, daughter and I decided to try out Hominy Grill. While a number of friends had recommended it, I had no idea how great it would be truly the best meal of the trip. What a relief to finally find a restaurant that offered the best of low country cooking without the pretentiousness of so many Charleston restaurants: shrimp and grits, shad roe, collard greens.and even fried chicken and some pretty incredible chocolate pudding for my two year old. Our waitress could not have been sweeter, sharing must see local sights/activities and making sure our daughter had plenty of toys to keep her entertained. I give Hominy Grill a big thumbs up! more

Sunday Brunch 2/5/2006

This morning was my last visit to the Hominy Grill. While the food was edible, Ive been much happier with breakfast at a Waffle House. Two slices of bacon, $2.95, nothing special, dry and barely warm. The two egg breakfast with grits. Grits tasted like instant grits, were running on the plate, and only about ? cup. Toast was stuck in the grits. Even more disappointing was the fact that a restaurant with their reputation did not address my complaint. I brought it to the waitresss attention as well as the hostess. Neither one felt it important enough to address my dissatisfaction with the breakfast. I realize that when you have customers waiting in line on a regular basis that they may not care if one customer is unhappy. If that is the case, then shame on them. There are too many other good restaurants in the Charleston areas. more

A merely average restaurant 8/3/2005

Southern chic, for those who like such things. Uninteresting space, uncomfortably crowded seating, and lots of posturing. Expensive and mediocre wine offering. Contrary to some reviews below, good food, but quite boring. The first course was cheaply done, and the entree decidedly lacking in flavor. On the whole, the food is comparable with what one might get from most any restaurant with a passing interest in freshness and presentation. To the establishment's credit, the service is attentive. more

Southern Hospitality!! 8/26/2004

We had a great dinner just before ""Charlie"" visited. The staff was attentive and the ambience outstanding. The patio was ""old Charleston"" and the food ""Southern Comfort"". We enjoyed this restaurant thoroughly and came highly recommended by our historic B&B the Cannonboro Inn. Pros: Great Southern Food, Great Staff, Ambience Cons: , Dinner is pricey more
