Very dry bakery and pastry - do not go here! 11/6/2009

This must be the driest, most unappealing tasting pastry I have ever tasted. Oh, it looks great in the case, but looks are quite deceiving! My 3 sisters and I went here, each bought a different pastry at cost of $7-$8 each, and although the 3 pastries were different ones, the verdict was the same - dry, disappointing, not much flavor at all. We ended up spening about $19 for just 3 pastries (didn't even have lunch, just 3 pastries - only ONE each!), and all 3 of us were so upset at having spent that kind of money on a bad experience. No beverages either for that price. We learned the hard way, and this is why we are letting you know. We don't want you to learn the hard way too. Dry pastry is nobody's friend and very unappealing. Your hard earned money is better spent elsewhere! Pros: None! Cons: Very dry bakery and pastry more

not closed officially 3/11/2009

My friends and I are so thrilled to hear they are going to re-open! We really enjoy hanging out there for coffee and lunches. We will definitely be back. We also have met the owner and can say with a fact that he is one of the nicest guy and with extremely high tolerance (believe me, my friends and i can be really high maintenance). So we kinda giggled at the last comment which unfortunately speaks more about the writer. Chill pill anyone? Pros: coffee, lunches, nice people Cons: store hrs not long enough more

Hereghty's is TERRIBLE - and thankfully, it's now CLOSED! 3/7/2009

This place was a nightmare - hubby and I both got sick after lunch here on one occasion. Cons: Food posoning, very rude owner, loses important corporate orders more

Let's Keep it Alive 12/3/2008

I reluctantly have to agree with the recent poor reviews. I was the #1 fan, but have been greatly dissappointed by the change in quality. I agree the service has been rude and flippant -- a change is needed -- Brian -- please read this and others and make the change -- it will go a long way. Pros: Coffee (used to be pastries) Cons: Service, and now pastries more

Priceless Pastries 10/16/2008

If you want great coffee and delicious pastries, this is the coffee shop for you. The staff is warm and friendly knowing you by name always remembering your coffee preference. I have been a patron of this coffee shop for a long time and highly recommend it. They offer a wide variety of breakfast pastries, a wonderful lunch menu, and fabulous desserts as well as a great wine selection. Custom cakes are available upon request. There is seating indoors and outdoors with music provided to make it relaxing and inviting. A great place to meet your friends to make everyday priceless. Pros: Great coffee and pastries more

Coming back 10/11/2008

I heard they are re-opening, yeah! Thought they were closed but guessed wrong. I'm so thrilled as it is a great place. Finally looking forward to the latte and lunches again! Pros: coffee, lunches, kid friendly Cons: not big enough more

No clue what customer service is 10/9/2008

I had to stop going several months ago after I realized that there was no way to predict when they would be open or if they would have anything to serve. That and the service always left me bitter for having just spent my money to support such unfriendly people. Pros: Great location and coffee Cons: Gas Station Service more

Must have a new baker 10/8/2008

I always was willing to put up with a little 'tude because I was addicted to their awesome pastries. Something has changed- their pastries are different and, quite frankly, I am not willing to put with the 'tude for their 'new' pastries. Rather go to Starbucks- they are friendlier, their pasties are just ok as is their coffee. Great coffee at H's, but not worth the 'tude anymore. The pastries used to put them over the top, but they must have a new baker or something. Pros: coffee Cons: service & the NEW pastries more

Delicious desserts and great coffee! 10/3/2008

my husband and i have been coming here at least once/twice a month...if we lived closer, we would be here probably everyday. so i sort of consider ourselves regular customers. we may not know all the staff's names, but we find them and their service to be just fine and have never had an issue, so i was quite surprised by the negative comments about the service here. what i find unfortunate is that people, in general, will be first in line to complain if they are not happy about something, but the last to share a compliment. its a shame. in our experience, the patries have always been delightful and sometimes we just spontaneously decide to make a trip over here and treat ourselves to one of their delicous choices and a good cup of coffee. occasionally, my girlfriends and i will meet up here in the evening for wine and desserts and it's such a neat place to hang out...very cozy, upscale decor and cool paintings. we can easily stay for hours. i love this place and i wish we lived closer! Pros: great desserts and coffee! Cons: not close to where we live more

do unto others . . . 10/2/2008

After reading the string of poor reviews about customer service at Hereghty, I just have to speak up. I am a regular at Hereghty and from what I see there, it is not always the staff that is snobby. The saying of ""the customer is always right"" can be taken too far. I have worked in food service for decades, and there are some folks who just push the envelope. Now, I am saying SOME, not all. And there are SOME folks who frequent Hereghty who have an inflated sense of entitlement. It is one thing to POLITELY make a special request, and it is another thing to act as though you are somehow better than the people who are doing their best to serve you. It makes me crazy to watch it. The employees at Hereghty are human beings, after all!! Pros: delicious, mouth watering coffee and pastries Cons: snobby clientele who think they own the Universe more

They have a new Baker!! 9/25/2008

I am so happy to write this review... We used to visit all the time and then they lost their baker- which wasn't good. Now, they have a new Baker and the pastries are back to 'excellent' and 'craveable'!!! They don't have the huge selection of dessert-type treats in the case that they once did, but they have an outstanding selection of scones, croissants, danish, etc. Definitely the place to go if you need breakfast for the office or if you just want to sip your coffee and lounge in their cafe. Also, the staff's attitude has improved immensely- some new faces are behind the counter and everyone is happy to be there. The coffee is still the best in the area and I am so glad to have the neighborhood bakery back - and even better! (Try the mushroom/gruyere croissant - won't find that anywhere else in Raleigh and it is YUMMY!). Thanks for making the changes in staff and finding such a talented baker... Hereghty's is back on our ""Highly Recommend"" list! Pros: breakfast pastries & the coffee Cons: closed on Sunday more

Don't waste your time ... the shelves are empty! 9/14/2008

The first time we visited the store two years ago we got hooked on the good deserts despite the high prices. But we witnessed a steady degradation of our experience there. Regardless of time of day, one finds fewer and fewer desert options available. Often, the store is simply closed during regular hours. One time, we skipped desert at a restaurant to make a stop at Hereghty ... the staff was closing 2 hours early because: ""We ran out of deserts"" All of them! Pros: Good deserts Cons: Everything else, it is a waste of your time more

A little too far 8/27/2008

I surprised my girlfriend to a nice birthday dinner at Parizade which was great and then I took her to Raleigh to treat her to something a little different -- dessert & coffee at Hereghty's. (my friends kept on telling me to go there for dessert.) We had such a nice experience at the cafe and really like this place and now she wants to keep on going back there, but it's not really a convenient drive for us and with the gas prices (we won't go there)...so hey Hereghty's, can't you please, please open one in Durham?! Pros: good dessert, coffee, atmosphere, and romantic Cons: not one or like one in Durham more

Stinky Attitudes! 8/23/2008

I am having fun reading some of the comments about this place but their attitude and customer service is really beyond horrible! I thought I was the only one who saw or experienced it. I went 2 or 3 times when it first opened but I have not set my foot there since September 2006 and will never go back. On that fateful day, I was humiliated and made fun of because I asked the sales guy to remove the chocolate icing from the eclair i bought. Before that, I had noticed other stuff and the attitude problem the whole staff suffers from. I work very hard for my money and I refuse to be disrespected when I am asking things for free (which I never do), let alone when I am paying! I do agree their pastries are great but I don't have to have them. They are luxury items I can do without but if I have to have them, I go to Durham to visit Guglhupf. I was so sorry my favorite bakery (Gourmandises de france) closed abruptly. For any business to be successful, great customer service needs to be there. Just having great products is not enough. They will learn this the hard way. Just mark my words guys, they will be out-of-business soon and they will have no one to blame but themselves. Self-inflicted wounds will take longer to heal!! Pros: Great pastries Cons: Horrible, unprofessional staff more

some reviews 8/20/2008

I went here to order a cake for my wifes 60th birthday on tuesday the 19th of august . I wanted a 12 inch Nice cake. Lemon sponge fresh fruit and mousse. I was told that they had to call the baker. The cake was for pickup on sunday the 24th.The baker told the sales person he would have to call him back to let him know if he could manage to make the cake. The sales person told me they would call me to let me know. Today the 20th I have still not heard from them. I have never seen such arrogance and lack of customer service ever anywhere. The fact that I was willing to pay an exorbitant amount for this cake and that it was for a very special occasion had no bearing on them. For a supposedly professional bakery to humiliate people in order for them to buy a 12 inch cake is absurd. They should go out of business with the reputation that they make the best cake there customers can't buy more

Great desserts but lacking in other areas 8/14/2008

This place is amazing IF you can get in and they actually have stock. I have tried on three separate occasions to take a friend after raving about the desserts. They were closed for several weeks during Christmas and Epiphany (something that would be far more forgivable if there had been a better sign posted so we didn't return twice). The next time, we returned on a Sunday afternoon for a dessert after lunch and there was nothing prepared except for one fruit tart. The cashier didn't bother to offer a time period as to when new items would be ready as we would have gladly waited if they were in the process of cooking at the time. The customer service is just lacking and to not have a single thing prepared in a bakery is inexcusable. I'm still debating as to whether to ever try again. Pros: Lovely cafe setting, delicious desserts and coffee Cons: Terrible customer service, no available food at certain times more

The name says it all...heavenly delicious!!! 7/31/2008

This place is amazing...you won't find pastries this good anywhere! Each time I visit with my kids, we try something new...and it's ALL been so DELICIOUS!!! My kids often ask if they can have a treat at Hereghy's today! We'll bring something home for Dad as well or else he'll be upset! ;) I've been there plenty of times and find the staff to be COMPLETELY WONDERFUL!!! They are helpful in making recommendations and are sweet to my kids too! :) We love this place!!! Pros: Extraordinary pastries, cozy place with style, super friendly staff!! Cons: Personally a far drive but so well worth it!!!! more

Absolute heaven!! 7/31/2008

Wow, we couldn't believe it when we discovered this adorable cafe with all it's delicious desserts...so many to choose from, it can be overwhelming and exciting at the same time. We've been a few times now and my husband's favorite are the fruit strips - he says they are better than those he used to get in some of the best places in New York! I have a few favs...usually anything with chocolate, like the flourless chocolate cake or the berlin cake. Depending on time of day we go, we'll sit and have our desserts with a good cup of coffee or wine, then grab a couple of bags of the mini cookies and muffins to go. This is heaven, heaven! Thank you! Pros: Delicious variety & great service! Cons: Gets crowded - sometimes hard to find a table more

Great pastries mostly, very poor attitude 5/16/2008

Before this place was open, the two brothers were interviewed by a local newspaper. During the interview they claimed that their products will steal all the customer from Gourmandises de France (Raleigh) and Guglhupf (Durham). 3 years later, Gourmandises has switched owners not because of Hereghty's wonderful desserts but because the owners wanted a change. Guglhupf is actually more popular now. But what kills me is when you make such a claim, at least treat your customers with respect. Would you go to a pastry shop to *pay* for their pastries and then get humiliated? As another reviewer said, this is not Paris. I hate to tell you in Paris they treat you a lot better than anywhere in Raleigh-Durham. At Hereghty's you get humiliated. They think they are God's gift to pastry shops and they are *NOT*. The business feels unprofessional: an example among others is the Swedish Torte. I come in early one day because coming in late means you will find nothing 4 hours before the shop closes, and found the sign for the torte on the shelf and none of it available. Turns out that one of the employees had taken and boxed all the slices to take home. ""Sorry, but have you tried the Green Tea cake."" So yeah I paid $5 for a piece of cake that tasted like I was eating facial mask. The overall feeling I got before I stopped going is that the employees and owners feel like they are fed up with customers. Try complaining then walk away and quickly look behind you, you will probably catch them flipping you the bird. Pros: great pastries, fresh ingredients not found anywhere in RTP Cons: Poor attitude, dwindling selection becoming Americanized more

Great espresso drinks and bear claws 4/28/2008

I stopped by this morning to place a special order (they are open on Mondays...), and of course had to get something for myself. Normally when I order a mint mocha I have to add some sugar, either because the espresso is too bitter or the chocolate isn't sweet enough. Well, not this time, my drink was PERFECT. Oh, absolutely delicious. I smiled to myself every time I took a sip. And, the bear claw was equally fantastic! Pros: Great product, good location and plenty of parking, extended hours Cons: Can't think of any... more
