Hendrix & McGuire Optical

When I went to get my new eye glasses I was adamant about one thing: I did not want the anti-reflective coating. I've had it before-- it's a nightmare to clean and then it does not stay clean. The optical assistant/ receptionist told me that the coating had changed a lot in 13 years and went on and on about how I should give it another try. I got my glasses and, to my chagrin, the anti-reflective coating was giving me the same problems as before. When I called to explain the problem, I was told that a refund wasn't possible, in a rude sort of way. I also went in to the shop to talk to her and show her what I was talking about...no refund. She suggested that I wash my glasses more often and said, ""hey, at least you only paid 60.00 for the coating--it's normally 120.00!"" As if that made it any better... Okay, so... ""my bad"" for letting them talk me into something I didn't need or want. But, something that is important to me is being able to trust my eye care professional's advice. I don't want to feel like they are just trying to make a quick sale--which I feel like they did. more

I was visiting Portland and a local recommended a visit to Hendrix & McGuire. What a great place - a huge range of very stylish frames, including retro look. Combined with really helpful and knowledgeable staff, who patiently tolerated us trying on everything until we found the perfect look. The whole experience was great fun. Highly recommended. I went to Hendrix & McGuire for the first time today and was completely charmed. The owners were fun and helpful and Dr. Buset was very thorough with the exam. I like how she explained what she was doing and why throughout. the eye tests. I work with a computer and get dry eyes. The sample pair of contacts she provided and I have been wearing all day are the most comfortable I have ever tried. I wasn't worried about cost, but they did offer different products at different price points. They also made me aware of a $75 brand rebate I can take advantage of. After my insurance, the contacts will basically be free. I found the prices to be in keeping with the average. I've been with Hendrix & McGuire for over a year. I've ordered new glasses as well as had some classic sunglasses retrofitted with prescription lenses. The staff are very helpful and I have found their prices quite reasonable. I love these women! they are all super friendly, helpful and they let me hang out in my indecisiveness while I tried on a million frames with out hovering over me every second. they checked in just the right amount and even had an awesome sale going on the frames that I picked out which included the lenses AND the frames. they have old. they have new. they have urban, retro, nerdy hipster, designer and utilitarian. I'd be hard pressed to think that you couldn't find what you wanted there. I'm PICKY as hell and I found 2 pair! thanks H&M! Pros: the ladies Cons: haven't seen any more

The only reason I gave this one star is because zero stars isn't an option. I made an appointment for a routine renewal of my contact prescription. (I've been wearing the same brand contacts for 20+ years.) When Dr. Nancy couldn't talk me into pricey disposables (they don't fit me and therefore aren't comfortable) and it was clear I wouldn't buy new glasses either, she refused to write me a prescription! I got some incoherent lecture about how she's responsible for the health of my eyes (which she just got through telling me was fine.) Apparently the fee for an exam is not good enough for her without the up-sell. I'm 41 and I've been seeing an eye doctor just about every year or so since I was 7 years old. Hendrix McGuire offer optical expertise and excellent service - I have been wearing glasses and contacts for 32 years and they understood the needs of someone with a very high prescription. They have been extremely friendly and helpful - I will go nowhere else. more

Since I was a child, I have received eye exams and lens grinding/glasses fittings from Hendrix and McGuire -- and I always had the most competent eye exams and received quality, quick and affordable service. Not the greatest selection, so I buy elsewhere and bring eyewear to them. You won't be disappointed! more
