Best

so went to meet some friends at Hals and was a little surprised. what i thought was going to be a snotty bar and uppity restaurant turned out to be a really great place. The bur...

Worst

I have loved going to Hal's, especially when meeting with my girlfriends, and at least twice each month on Fridays. However, for the last three times the female waiter for the bar...

the best local place with great food, service and atmosphere 8/29/2006

Long time patron with overdue praise. Owners on site assure quality. Great upstairs for private party and quiet atmosphere. more

A Wonderful Place 5/19/2005

A neighborhood restaurant with style that takes pride in doing the little things right. May not have the biggest menu and you can probably find cheaper fare. But you wont find a place that provides such a consistently good night out. Great place for live jazz on Sunday night, too. Pros: Friendly Staff, Down to Earth Clients, Awesome Music Cons: Noisy at Times, Parking more

It's all about their Bread Pudding! 4/14/2005

This thing takes 20 min. to make, but it was the best bread pudding ever! more

good experience 12/24/2004

i had the risotto and it was great. the place gets a little noisy so conversation can be difficult. service was okay - waiter took order then just disappeared until check time. interesting crowd so people watching keeps you occupied. decor is nice. Pros: food, decor more

Reliable 7/11/2004

The menu is hit or miss, but mostly hit. Granted, it's nothing spectacular, but fairly typical Westside LA fair. May be a bit pricey for some, though, but a decent standby for just another dinner out. The green apple sorbet is the only thing I unconditionally recommend. more

One (big) problem 1/26/2004

A $25 entree is an unusual splurge for us and we tend to expect a lot for that kind of money. In many ways, Hal's delivered. Rich's turkey burger was tasty if unremarkable, but the accompanying salad was incredibly delicious. Chris thought his pork mignon was outstanding, and the risotto with carmelized onions was sublime. However, something was observed that kind of killed the mood. A series of comped deserts that followed were of varying quality. The sorbet trio was bright and refreshing and the chocolate cake had a slight bitterness that was compelling, but the lime tart was very runny. On the whole, if you can forgive the (censored) and the half-hearted attempt to compensate for it, it was an enjoyable, albeit noisy, dining experience. Pros: Food, Service Cons: noisy more

we always end up at hal's 11/1/2003

i live in venice and although there are a lot of great restaurants in this area, we always end up at hal's. it just has a great mix of somewhat moderately priced food, good drinks and a neighborhood vibe that kinid of has a buzz to it. i always take friends who are visiting here because it's such a part of my life in venice! THE best ceasar salad, amazing burger and they even have our favorite beer (Chimay)! Definitely go check it out ...the jazz on Sunday and Monday nights for sure adds to atmosphere. Pros: great food, reasonable prices, fun atmosphere Cons: crowded at bar more

Mediocre 8/22/2003

What is all the hype? Hal's is mediocre at best, in every aspect. The decor is bland. The menu is limited and overpriced. The service didn't leave any lasting impression. I just don't understand. more

Not worth the price 8/17/2003

Although the decor in the restaurant was appropriate for Abbot Kinney, I thought the place was too noisy, the service too slow, and the food way overpriced. Even as one of the cheapest entree on the menu, a 14 dollar turkey burger is too expensive. Same with a 14 dollar soup and salad. Pros: Neighborhood, Decor Cons: Noisy, Slow service, Too expensive. more

Great Food! 4/10/2003

Although it took awhile for them to seat us with reservations, it was worth the wait for the food. The food was awesome and the ambiance was even better. Good crowd and good decor. I would definitely go back again! Pros: Food, The Crowd, Good Bar Cons: Waiting to be seated more

Are we magically invisible?? 12/6/2002

Went on a Monday night. The host seemed to be bothered by us asking him for a table. He seated us anyway. We then sat for an entire 22 minutes without ANYONE coming to our table. Even after waving to several servers, busboys, and the host. After the first 10 minutes, we thought the service was just slow. After 15 min., it started to get annoying. After 20 min., it became a ""game""...how long will it be before someone notices us? Needless to say, we walked out. I assume we were seated in a section that was not assigned to a server, but come on! Pros: Wouldn't know! Cons: No serivce = bad! more

The coolest place on AK Blvd! 7/11/2002

Very cool NY feel. The turkey burgers are awesome! They do a great Sunday brunch. Sit upstairs if you can - much quieter. My favorite place for a drink on a weekend afternoon. more

music food and drinks 6/26/2002

Great location on Abot Kinney makes this a great place to start after work or on a Sunday night- They have some great live music and a nice bar. crowd tends to be 30's 40's...good scene. more

Split Decision 5/20/2002

Hal's has a lot going for it. The decor is beautiful (including original Joni Mitchell paintings), the Monday night jazz is great and the food and drinks are tasty/strong respectively. My main problem with Hal's is that sometimes it's really just an upscale meat market. Other times the vibe is downright seedy. There were three occassions in a row when I went there and the bathrooms were inaccessible because people had crowded inside them for purposes other than their intended use. The bottom line: The food is good, the crowd (usually) a mover and shaker bunch, the drinks potent. Just be weary. Pros: live jazz mondays Cons: can be meat market more
