We had to wait for our food over an hour after we ordered. When we complained they actually ARGUED with us. I guess they're ok with unhappy customers.

Amazing atmosphere 3/12/2009

I heard about this cafe through the Pittsburgh Post Gazzette years ago, but hadn't the time to stop by till last month. I am of Slovak descent and grew up hearing Slavic music. I came on a Thursday, which is the day they have a gypsy band play, and it was absolutely beautiful! To hear music that isn't heard anywhere else was fantastic. The food, the service, and the atmosphere were wonderful! I even tried dancing the Czarda's. Maybe one recommendation would be for them to add another room with a dance floor for people to dance to the Slavic music! ;) Pros: Good food, service, music, atmosphere more

Large parties with varying tastes. 6/23/2008

You know those evenings where you are not quite sure what you are looking for...you want to try something new, but you are sick of Italian and maybe you have a large party to accommodate with many different tastes. Gypsy Cafe is the place for you. I have enjoyed their unique menu three times in the last month and I have yet to taste anything there I have not been thoroughly impressed by. Everyone I have shared this great little treasure with has been equally pleased. Pros: Service, changing menu, delicious drinks Cons: Parking more

Mean girls! 6/12/2008

Gypsy Cafe is one of our favorite restaurants, and I checked up here for reviews exactly because of the previous comment. My boyfriend and I were having a quiet date near what had to be the girls who wrote the last review. There were 5 younger girls sitting just as you come in the door on a church pew on a Sunday night. They were obnoxiously mean, ordering around their young waitress who seemed to do everything short of dancing for them to please them. They were dismissive and mean. They're food did seem to take a long time to come out, but that just might have been because they refused to order at the same time and kept actually yelling ""hey"" to their waitress from across the room to change their orders and demand more things! One of the girls woudln't order at all but kept calling the girl back to ask more questions and then send her away. The waitress got so frustrated she calle dthe bartender over to help, but they were just as mean to her. I am in my 20's too and girls like them are what gives younger people a bad name in restaurants. My boyfriend and I can act like adults and have a good time and it is sad that not everyone can do the same. It's just as mean to say this, but my boyfriend thought they were so nasty because their waitress was so much cuter than any of them were! We will continue to go to the Gypsy Cafe and have a great time with their great food, sevice, and atmosphere, and hope our night wont' be ruined by a table so terrible again! At least Gypsy can be happy they won't see those customers again! Pros: Great place all around! Cons: Nasty customers at other tables! more

Don't bother. 3/26/2008

Slow service 12/22/2007

The atmosphere is slow and easy going and so is the service. They may want you to savor the experience of the eastern european dining. Food was good but you had to ask for bread according to the menu. When I did ask, I never got it, so I guess that was just a suggestion not an actual request. The soup was excellent (cabbage) and the food was good just really slow. Pros: Nice ambiance Cons: slow service more

One year later, things are only worse 11/6/2007

I couldn't agree more with the previous reviewer! Nearly 1 year later and the staff and service at the Gypsy Cafe are rude, unprofessional, and slow as molasses. My friends and I meet once a week for dinner and we were really excited to try this place. however, upon arriving (and ordering) we had to wait an hour and a half for our meal, even after asking what the hold up was. It was particularly frustrating considering ours was one of two parties in the place, and the other guests had their food wrapped up! While the appetizers were good, the main course meals were inconsistent. Two of us liked the meal, but the rest were left wondering ""what was taking so long to make this?!"" And, I had the same order as my friend and our meals tasted nothing alike (and mine- not good & cold). When we expressed our disatisfaction, we were further displeased to find an argumentative response, and the offer to comp a ""corking fee"" we weren't even told about (and only applied to 2 of the 5 of us!). Even after all of this, it took another 20 minutes to get our bill sorted out (were they using an abacus to divide the appetizer bill?). Needless to say, we won't ever be visiting this restaurant again. There are many great restaurants in the South Side- go elsewhere. Pros: Nice atmosphere, unique decor Cons: Service, food, value, attitude more

good value...not so good service 11/30/2006

We found the food to be decent and a good value for the money although not the most creative menu. The staff needs to work on being more friendly! They have a very cold attitude toward their guests and it took forever to get the food. We dont mind the wait if the food is exceptional but for avg food it took waaaay too long and there was waaaay too much attitude when we did get it. For a new restaurant they should appreciate people who are willing to give it a chance. It was almost like we should feel privledged to even be waited on. Not a great way to entice people to come back. There is more than one restaurant in Pittsburgh, and plenty with less attitude! Pros: good value and nicely decorated Cons: slow service from very unfriendly staff, no liquor licence, and hard to park more

GOOD FOOD!!!!! 11/11/2006

We love this place! Been there many times and NEVER had a bad meal. Make sure you call for a reservation its worth it. The menu changes several times a year, so never have to worry about having a boring menu (as if this place could have a boring menu!) TRY IT_ YOU WILL LIKE IT!!! Pros: GREAT FOOD Cons: some times hard to park (but worth it!) more

Great Food, Great Atmosphere! 8/9/2006

This is my favorite restaurant in Pittsburgh! It has a wonderful bohemian/artsy atmosphere - great for dates and intimate evenings with friends. And the food is excellent! Unlike many restaurants these days, there are many healthy options - from hummus served with veggies and warm pita to fish and seafood dishes prepared with vegetable-based sauces and relishes. There are also options for those who are vegetarians and vegans. The desserts are also phenomenal! I recently had a cream and (fresh) blueberry tart that was out of this world! more

Great place 5/25/2006

We have been to the Gypsy Cafe on numerous occasions and have enjoyed it each time. We always go on Thursdays when there is live music. I know they have music other days also. The music is the best live acoustic entertainment around. The food is very good. I have tried lots of items and my favorites are the ""Cossack"" chicken, Baked Feta appetizer, sweet potato gnocci, and of course the goulash. They change the menu seasonaly, so not all the above are on the menu all the time. The owner is most gracious and will make sure you enjoy your evening! Pros: music, food, atmosphere more

shame 2/14/2006

I went to this place with my girlfriend and we were both initially delighted by the looks of the place. We had a reservation, were setaed immediately in a place that had good seating arangments, clean white linens, decent stemware... and great live music. And then: horrendous service, waitress that could not give us a time of her day (we don'thave milk!? in the restaruant?). Food was terrible - bland, old bread, overcooked. So much visual potential, wonderfull music - such a shame. Pros: music, music, music Cons: food, service, service more

Great little place! 11/17/2005

I've been to a lot of newer restaurants in Pitt and this one is a definite must see! The restaurant is housed in an old church. The food is mediterranean/greek and was wonderful. We had the sarkidalia for an appetizer and I had the Linguinie with Scallops in Romesco. My wife had the sweet potato & pumpkin gnocchi. We both loved it. The restaurant is BYOB, but that's great too! Don't forget to get your tarot card reading during or after the meal! Pros: quaint location, food, great value Cons: can be tough to park more
