Editorial review from Citysearch 12/19/2013

I've been doing business with Bill Darling for years and would recommend him to anyone who is looking for quality work and a fair deal. I've trusted him with some pretty expensive guns and have never had a complaint. \r I was prompted to write this after reading the comment that I paraphrase, ""I've never met him or talked to him...but I don't like him."" And you think Bill is prejudiced? You are the definition of narrow-mindedness. more

Great place 3/9/2012

He showed me how to break down the firearm that I purchased. Was kind, courteous, and very friendly. Great guy. @ Patriot whom called him dangerous. That's slanderous. Especially, since you've never spoken to him. You just dislike what he believes in. I will be letting him know. more

The only real gunsmith in Maine 1/28/2012

Bill is a real gunsmith that went to school for it. it is not that he dose not know how to do something. His insurance will not cover it. There is vary few people i would trust more than Bill. He is also a Air Force vet. He is a hard working American that cares for his county. more

The House of Clown 3/16/2011

He can't be all bad ... his name is Bill! more

Helpful and enthusiastic 12/10/2010

Bill was very helpful in my selection of a shotgun to fit my needs. The price was very pair for the Browning BPS Buck Special 12GA. He is very knowledgeable in his areas and I would recommend him to anyone who needs a used or new gun. more

The owner is a Complete Clown 5/29/2010

Poor guy, every week somebody else gets scapegoated on his highway sign. The UN, ACLU, minorities, Democrats, teachers, academics, etc... pretty much the usual litany expected from the good little fox news follower. I have never met the man but then I usually stay away from clearly unstable individuals seething with rage and hate. Surely I'm not alone in thinking that it's a matter of time before he snaps and goes on a rampage. To all the morons who say he has a first amendment to speak out, yes he does. Of course all of you self-profess constitutional scholars know that the first amendment is only about government preventing free speech. It has absolutely nothing to do with someone stating some stupid positions on a highway sign and then being called on it here. Nice try though. Pros: Hasn't used any of his guns yet on some innocent party Cons: Owner doesn't feel comfortable in a democracy more

Do not like Bill's opinion? Welcome to America 11/21/2009

In America, we are all enitled to our beliefs, opinions, freedom of religion, etc. If you are afraid to hear and entertain the realistic, down to earth, Honest opinion of a fellow American, then shame on you! This asault on a fellow American who is freely expressing his honest views and opinions is unexceptable and Un-American. Is Bill shaming you? Condemning you? He is expressing his righjts of freedom of speech under the Constitution of the United States of America!! Remember the Constitution? Do those of you in protest of Bill's comments remember that clause relating to freedom of speech? YES, I understand you're expressing your freedom as well. These blogs allow people who may be incapable of dealing with reality and/or are non confrontational to express views which may never be vocalized otherwise. Have you engaged in a formal debate with Bill? Can you provide statistics, data, or documentation as clearly as Bill? Don't be a coward and hide behind the cloak of the internet. Bill invites your opinion/debate and is man enough to listen to you and evaluate your side. You never know, you may enligthen him! He invites you to prove him wrong, But, I'm sorry, its just easier to slam him and those of us who express the same views from a cowardess position. Pros: informative, and direct Cons: no one is perfect more

Owner is a Right Wing Lunatic 9/7/2009

I don't know anything about guns, but every time I drive by, I see the most virulent, hateful, anti-American messages on his illuminated sign. I can't imagine supporting this cretin so that he can continue disseminating this garbage. I assume he uses Rush & Glen Beck as his primary sources, with a side dish of Ann Coulter. This guy is dangerous! Cons: Owner is a Right Wing Lunatic more

Bill has a right to his opinions, but... 5/29/2009

Bill has a right to his opinions alright. But I find the messages on his front sign exceptionally hostile and ugly. It's one thing to state your opinion, it's another thing to demonize whole groups of people. He slams minorities, women, immigrants, labor unions, Democrats among others. And given that he sells weapons, there is a disturbing, unstated threat of violence in the rage he displays towards those he disagrees with. His sign is a disgrace to the town and gun owners alike: he puts the ""nut"" in ""gun-nut."" In my mind, there is a big difference between free speech and hate speech. Americans fought and died for one not the other. I'm a life long hunter, but will take my business elsewhere! Pros: He's closed at night. Cons: Doesn't know difference between free speech and hate speech more

Hey, Don't buy a gun the way you would buy a book about guns, ok? 1/15/2009

Bill Darling is an American. He has been a great resource for my three sons as they have learned to use guns over the years, and he is entitled to his opinions- as we all are- this being a free country with the first amendment still going strong. It is one thing to have a theory, and another to pull a trigger. Don't go in to Bill's gun shop expecting to be fed something you want to hear, necessarily. Like guns themselves, it takes a certain amount of skill and courage to pull a trigger. It's harder than the movies make it seem. Bill knows his stuff, and like his weapons, knows that anything worth having an opinion about carries a kick back. If you don't like that kind of edge, please, spare us all- and don't buy a gun- in Raymond, or anywhere. Sincerely, N. Daley Pros: freedom of speech and the right to bear arms Cons: people who only pay lip service to the concepts of freedom. more

Beware of this hack 1/5/2009

Went to this shop located in Raymond to look for a used rifle at a good price. After listening to this guy talk about firing .223 ammo which was damaged in a fire he had, through a CUSTOMERS firearm, and having a round get stuck in the barrell, I decided I was not going to do business here. Not professional talk for a man who makes his money doing this. Pros: seemed to have ok prices Cons: not a trustworthy business more

Honest, Basic Gunsmithing 12/10/2008

Bill is first of all, very honest in my opinion after purchasing a couple of guns from him as well as having repairs and reblueing done. Pros: Honest, funny, true Mainuh Cons: Leave the high tech repairs to someone who specializes in that area more

Best Basic Gunsmithing 7/14/2008

I have known Bill Darling for about 12 years now. I have used his services for bluing, basic repairs, sights, scopes/installation and barrel crowning. I have also bought countless guns from him. His selection changes reasonably quickly so there is usually something new to see. For top-notch restoration of expensive/historic firearms there are some better choices and I think that Biill would tell you as much. Like anywhere, his proces run from the very resonable to the too expensive range. Note however, that all of his prices include the tax. Pros: Quick, good handle on the basics, good advice, reasonable prices, good jokes & stories Cons: Does not really do machine work, restoration on historical pieces must sometimes be brought to more of a specialist gunsmith (Bill will tell you this) more

Best gunsmith in the Portland area 6/13/2008

I have been doing business wiht Bill for 7 years now. I have had 2 firearms reblued, 3 firearms repaired, and purchased 4 firearms from him. In addition I have bought several firearm accessories and several hundreds of rounds of ammunition from him over the years. He is always extremely fair in his prices and business practices. He is a first rate gunsmith, and the only gunsmith in the area that I would trust to work on my firearms. He may not have the largest selection of firearms for sale in the area, but he can order almost any firearm you would want. All I can about mikesdddd, is that he sounds like a local person that is anti-gun in every aspect and doesn't like Bill being able to exercise his 1st Amendment right on his own sign. The bottom line is if you don't like Bill's politics, then don't do business with him. If you want to deal with a first rate gunsmith, then you need to go to Gulf of Maine Gunsmithing. Pros: Friendly atmosphere, and even the other customers will help you out if they can. Cons: Prices may not be the lowest, but they are reasonable for the value you are getting more

excellent Gunsmith 3/5/2008

I have done business with Bill at Gulf of Maine Gunsmithing for 15 years and have been completely satisfied with both his gunsmithing and sales of firearms,( especially prices ) and ammo. Bill has never led me wrong. I recommend him whenever the opportunity arises He is honest and trustworthy and will go the extra mile when necessary. I have has 3 firearms re-blued and they came out perfect, what more can you ask. more

worst gunsmith ever 10/19/2007

Brought my antique side by side 12ga. in for a new front bead sight. When I picked up the gun after the service was ""completed"", I took it home and noticed a small, yet crucial piece of the internal cocking mechanism was missing. The gun would not set the firing pins without this piece. I called The owner of Gulf Of Maine Gunsmithing and explained what I had found (or rather not found). He assured me he had not lost it, but could order a new piece for me. I agreed, seeing as how my heirloom was useless without it. Darling called me THE NEXT DAY and said he had the piece. I drove to his shop, and He charged me $20 for the piece which had identical wear marks as my original, yet was ""new"", and was miraculously shipped to him within hours, and the piece is no longer manufactured by Winchester. This Guy is no more than some shmuk who would rather f**k his customers than be an honest working American. BEWARE!!! Cons: COMMIE more
