What mexican food?? 10/21/2009

Went to this wannabe Mexican food place a few weeks ago and was majorly disappointed. The food sucked. Nothing about it was mexican. You can't just add some salsa to something and call it mexican. Where was the menudo, chilaquiles or mole?? Ohh they did have these crappy store bought tamales that tasted like plastic!! There were no traditional mexican desserts or drinks. The server was a total D*ck. He was way more interested in serving the tables full of the young hot dumb blondes than he was of helping anyone else. The other tables next to us were complaining as well. In a nutshell, bad food, bad service, you have to pay for vallet parking when your car is 2 feet away from you. I'd rather to go El Torito than this place again.....The only reason I give this place one star is because you have to in order to publish this post!!! Pros: Good location Cons: Crappy food & bad service more

THE WORST EVER 4/12/2009

I have been to Gringo's a few times. This is my last time. Everytime the service and food is mediocre. This last time I complained to the manager about our server and he called me a liar! Also, pretty sure 5 out of the 6 of us are sick today from the food. Not good. Pros: Margaritas Cons: Everything else more

Best brunch on the beach 7/16/2008

I have been to Gringos many times, and I have always enjoyed my time there. The food is good, the margaritas are freakin awesome! Where else can you get a 27 ounce drink that they arent pushing for you to share with someone? Its like the big gulp of booze. On sundays they have a brunch that is all you can eat and drink mimosas. Sold! The food is good too, I usally get the filet and shrimp combo. Its a file mignon and jumbo prawns for like $25. Good deal. Great place to go with friends, great drink specials, i highly reccomend it. Pros: margaritas and brunch more

Gringo's is a tourist trap - & not in a good way 3/3/2008

From the outside Gringo's looks really cool. Even the inside boasts a really cool atmosphere. We visited Pacific Beach for the 1st time to explore the area and enjoy a night away from L.A. Sadly, the atmosphere alone could not overcome the less than mediocre food. As an example, the table-side guacamole came with canned diced jalape?os. We requested fresh diced jalape?os and received a 2nd bowl of the canned stuff. What Mexican restaurant doesn't have fresh jalape?os on hand? Not sure that Pacific Beach has anything better to offer, but if you want good food, don't go to Gringo's. Pros: atmosphere, heaters on the porch Cons: food, margaritas more

Gringos hates you 2/8/2008

There's a reason "Gringos" can be used as a derogitory term - The service wasn't bad. It was horrible, if not insulting. Our waitress was condecending, outlandishly rude and actually tried to make our dinner horrible. Do not go, it was the worst. The food was mediocre and not worth the price. Do not go there. If you smile once they will hate you. Gringo. more

Bartender Ignores you even if you try to be a nice person? 11/26/2007

We brought an "out of town guest" and only had problems. The sever let us know from the start that we were in for a rough night. We did our best to be kind and warm but... well it did no good for us. Our evening started with chips and cheese dip that were colder than the service we received from our angry and robotic bartender. After this we were told that, around 9:25pm, the kitchen had closed early due to lack of business, and that we could not order anything. After ordering a shot of tequila and a margarita, we were ignored while our bartender "Anna" paid attention to the other side of the bar. As we left to go to another restaurant for sustenance Anna made eye contact with my boyfriend, Mike, that was very concerned. He asked what the issues was, and said was there a problem with the bill. She then told him that he needed to pay the total bill, and Mike asked her and the bar back what it was they were talking about. Then my boyfriend asked her what was going on. He tried to make it clear that we had paid already. Anna gave him a very intense lecture about not paying the bill. When the Bar Back and Anna realized that the mistake had been a matter of the Bar Back putting the payment into the tip jar. Anyway, after this wonderful experience we asked to speak to a manager. A very polite lady named Brandy came out to tell me that she was sorry for the experience and we thanked her for her time. Thanks, and I rarely make complaints of this type. I can only hope this helps make improvements for the staffing and management as well as for future guests at this venue. -Sonya Pros: Service Cons: Ambience more

  • The Scene
When out-of-town guests come in for a visit or if you just have a special occasion to celebrate, this is the go-to restaurant in Pacific Beach. Unlike the beach hut-themed restaurants up Garnet, Gringo's space is elegant and modestly designed with Spanish-style furnishings and a sleek, but never generic atmosphere.

    The Food
While there's nothing new here (everything is relatively recognizable), the kitchen is good at taking a traditional dish and making it their own with technique and seasonings. Two good examples are the Conchita Pibil - Yucatan-style baked pork in banana leaves in an achiote marinade - and the Pescado a la Parilla of grilled swordfish topped with papaya-black bean salsa on a bed of Mexican pilaf. Of course, the restaurant is also a great place for drinks and appetizers on a hot day: a couple of the bar's mojitos and an order of nachos is a hard afternoon to top.
