This is a gem of a studio 11/3/2011

I have worked in a ton of studios in New York and Brooklyn. Grand Street has one of the warmest vibes of them all. It's comfortable, the gear is great and it's affordable. Ken the owner/engineer is amazing to work with as is the other engineer Tomek. I've done sessions here for two records now. It's my new goto spot. Great drum sounds, too! A gem for sure. more

one of brooklyn's A+ studios! 2/27/2010

ken rich's grand street recording is a second-to-none recording studio in new york city, which by extension makes it a second-to-none recording studio nationwide. ken's obvious, innate recording and listening talent combined with the love that he puts into every project amounts to a recording studio with limitless possibilities for musicians of every genre. it also doesn't hurt that ken's buddies, some of the world's most sought-after musicians, leave massive piles of amazing gear in storage there, and this quid-pro-quo is passed onto the client. bonus! i've done a handful of sessions at grand street as both a sideman and a leader, and every time, the result was the same: ken was the first one there and the last to leave. he had a positive attitude the whole time, we got the drums up and miked quickly, and he didn't spend half the session checking his email or texting people. in today's recording environment, that's freaking HUGE. please take your money and give it to ken so that he can make you sound really great. you won't regret it. Pros: yea, lots of pros record there. Cons: yea, some of them are probably ex-cons more

Grand Street Recording in Williamsburg is excellent. 2/24/2010

Ken Rich's grand street studio in Williamsburg is excellent. There is a live room large enough to accommodate a band, a really nice control room where we set up to record scratch vocals, plus a smaller room for isolation. Nice mics, good headphones and amps, great selection of drums. Keys players...while there isn't a real piano, the Wurlitzer and Rhodes pianos are in excellent shape. There is also a groovy vintage electric organ which holds some interesting possibilities, and also a Clavinet. Ken and his assistant that day (Tomek) were friendly and efficient, and most importantly really adept at getting good sounds quickly. We didn't waste any time with pro tools melt- downs or equipment malfunctions; everything seems to be in great shape and more importantly they know how to use it. One thing I really dug about the engineering was that Ken is an accomplished musician. I never felt like he was forcing his advice or opinion on us, but if asked he always had good input. Some engineers try to step in and ""produce"" unnecessarily but Ken would wait until his opinion was sought. In that regard his etiquette as an engineer was great. When not recording the control room or office are also great spots to hang out, drink coffee, peruse a selection of music books or order take out from many of the restaurants conveniently located around this Williamsburg location. All in all a great studio and a great experience. I'm really looking forward to doing more work here in the future. more

This place is no joke! 2/24/2010

Grand Street Recording is the perfect all around recording environment. Ken's live room is fantastic for drums and big enough to record a large live band. Not only that, but he knows his rooms, gear and instruments so well that you can't finish a cup of coffee before he says ""We're rolling."" It was a real treat for me to find that New York's top drummers store their vintage Ludwigs, Gretches Rodgers and bags of old amazing cymbals in the space, all for my use! Who else can say that?! more

This studio rules! 2/23/2010

Ken is an awesome dude who knows his stuff inside and out and contributes some really killer ideas when necessary. They have some of the coolest gear you can imagine. Last time I got a gorgeous guitar tone out of an old 50's tweed fender deluxe. The vibe of the studio is really comfortable and very conducive to creativity. The engineers are efficient, knowledgeable, incredibly skilled, and very cool to hang with. Equipment is excellent. I was incredibly happy with the session and the sounds that came out of it. Pros: awesomeness more

Check out Grand Street Recording 11/8/2009

I've done a bunch of recording at heavy, expensive studios--Quad, Sear Sound--but you won't get anything near the quality and attention to detail that you'll get at Grand Street. We've been working with Ken steady over the past couple months and it's the best recording experience I've ever had, no joke. They've got great gear and an excellent space, but that's kind of a given. What sets GSR apart is killer sounds, expertise, and a musician's ear for what is going to make each track pop. Can't go wrong here, I'm telling you-- Pros: Dope sounds, dope space, dope gear Cons: None that I know of more

The Place to Record... Look No Further! 11/1/2009

I've done a fair amount of recording at Grand Street this past year, tracking trombone for a bunch of different musical projects, and I have to say that it is one of my favorite places to record. Ken has fantastic ears and ideas and he works SO FAST. I probably end up recording what would take 90 min or even two hours in about an hour while working with Ken and it always sounds great. There is never any waiting for him to set things up or find the right spot to cue you in which lets you just concentrate on making music (and that also makes things much cheaper for whoever is paying for the studio time... more bang for your buck... you can't argue with that!). Highly recommended! Pros: Ken Rich, gear, Ken Rich, location, Ken Rich, vibe more

Things that go bump in the night 10/28/2009

Ken has recorded or mixed many of my projects over the years... but Grand Street has that magic, not to mention that mic collection. In short, Grand Street feels like you're alone at home recording but you never have to check your levels and what comes out don't sound nothing like home. Cheers to Ken. Darren Gaines & The Key Party> Pros: Extended Family Friendly more

LOVE ME SOME GRAND STREET RECORDING! 10/25/2009

I?ve done many recording sessions with Ken Rich. We?ve not only recorded straight-up rock ?n? roll songs but we?ve taken quite a few musical risks, as well. We?ve incorporated everything from a horn section and honky-tonk piano to drum machine and synth bass. But no matter what the genre or instrumentation, the track always comes out about a zillion times better than I thought it would. - Rob Carlyle, The Compulsions Pros: Results, vibe, staff, gear more

Greatest Studio to record your record! 10/24/2009

I have basically recorded all my recent albums at Grand Street Recording and would recommend going NOWHERE else! Not only is the studio awesome, with a great chill vibe and lots of great rooms - Ken Rich is really the man behind the magic. Ken can wear so many different hats. If you need just a PRO engineer - Ken Rich is that. If you also need him to work with you as a Producer or just a 2nd opinion - he can do that. Ken has the ability to push and challenge an artist - while still making them feel completely comfortable and supported. I truly would say if you are looking for a studio in the New York / Brooklyn area - don't even think about going anywhere other than Grand Street Recording! I have had nothing but positive experiences there. Pros: Ken Rich / his pro staff / great vibe / great gear! more

Grand Street Rules 10/23/2009

Ken Rich is a dear friend of mine. Not only is he a professional of the highest regard, he's a sensitive, open minded musician and producer. It's not about what he wants, it's about taking an artists' material and bringing it to the place they hear it, and going even further. It's an inspiring, comfortable setting at Grand Street that breeds creativity. Not to mention all the talented people that lend a hand in playing on any number of artists records that are working there. Grand Street Rules....... Pros: they are Cons: no, no cons more

Consummate Professionalism 10/23/2009

We have worked with Mr. Rich on two separate theatrical productions. Our first collaboration was on a play called ""Unequalibrium"". Over several sessions, Ken created an intricate design for the production with precise sound effects cues and more subtle, mood enhancing pads that played beneath scenes. In addition, he composed longer thematic pieces for the act breaks which tied the play together aurally. His creativity went beyond our expectations. Audiences were not able to talk about the production without talking about the score. After completing our next play, ""The Common Air"", we returned to Grand Street and Ken Rich, to even better results. After a 6 month run in Los Angeles, Ken's work garnered three nominations, and winning two awards for Best Sound Design from The Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle and the LA Ovation Awards. We will be back when we're done with out third. Thank you, Ken. Alex Lyras & Robert McCaskill. more

Our favorite studio in Brooklyn 10/23/2009

I love working with Ken at Grand Street Recording. He makes beautiful choices with microphones and effects, and his very presence is sensitive to and supportive of the subtle vibe of Edison Woods. Ken speaks up when he thinks something isn't quite right, which I also greatly appreciate. Mixing with Ken is just as much a pleasure, and I am so grateful for his ability to create adequate space for our layers of tracks, and still allowing the special details to come through, just enough. Pros: Staff, gear, vibe more

The best studio in brooklyn! 10/23/2009

I've been working remotely with Ken Rich at Grand Street Recording. And, I could not be happier with the results. The quality of the mix is superb. Ken is insightful and attentive to artistic intent, and he presents the work at its best. Communicating with Ken remotely is a breeze. He's one step ahead. It is apparent when working with him that he is a seasoned pro more

Best studio and management in NYC! 10/15/2009

I was just at Grand Street Recording this past weekend with a couple friends for a three hour session and got several songs out for our new album and could not be more pumped. Ken was awesome and made several key suggestions that went a long way to make our style unique and was exactly what we wanted. We have been shopping our demo's and just signed a contract this morning for a single release in the UK club scene. The two managers there are awesome and Grand Street Recording will bring out your inner artist with their laid back atmosphere and great ear for whats hot. We will not go anywhere else when getting our sound on wax! Pros: Highest quality equipment! Brand new Recording Studio! Cons: None Found more
