Not that bad ... really. 8/3/2008

I read the reviews on this site before I went to GYC and was a little nervous about going to the place. I'm not a big brooklyn fan in general - which I probably shouldn't be admitting on ""City Search Brooklyn"" - as it seems like there's an air of ""too cool for school"" that permeates the entire western portion of the borough, but figured I'd go check it out with a couple of my friends that live on Hoyt and Atlantic. Pros: decent beer selection Cons: it's in brooklyn more

Crappiest people in the world! 6/10/2008

It was close to 100 degrees when I went to the Gowanus Yacht club with my boyfriend. I was ID-ed and I didn't have my ID with me. To my surprise I was shut down from ordering a measley PBR. I was shocked that I was ID-ed in the first place since it seems like they're trying to pull off a tacky dive bar on the street anyway -- plus, I'm not ashamed to mention it, I'm cute. I ordered a veggie burger from the greasy looking, waiter, and after he spent five minutes walking around smoking a cigarette, he told me they were out of the veggie burgers. I was hot, miserable, and filled with nothing but hate for the stupid stuff like the rules posted on the chalk board and the fact that the ugly waiter id-ed me. Totally not worth it. Pros: Beer selection Cons: Service, Crowd, Seating more

Fresh & Warm 5/27/2008

Fast Bottled Water or Soda - - - NO other reasont o go. 2/29/2008

It's an OK shop. Large selection but WAY over priced. And once I found out that this place was owned & run by the same people who own & run the filthy Gowanus Yacht Club I figured how clean could this place be? Pros: large selection of realtively fresh bagels if you get there early Cons: Same filthy people run/own the the pig sty yacht club next door. I won't eat food from there now! more

PRETENTIOUS TRUST FUND BABY CROWD!!!! 12/29/2007

Typical pretentious herd that thinks they are cooler than everyone else. I purposely brought my bay ridge friends to this place just to annoy the hipsters there. I love watching the hipsers look at some of my buddies with thier yankees jackets and erin go bragh t-shirts. Pros: dont know Cons: pretentious, hipster too cool for you crowd more

Don't waste your time! 10/7/2007

The food is below average and the service is far worse! I stronly urge you not to eat here. My girlfriend and I ordered two cold cut sandwiches with only one other customer ahead of us. It took the brilliant staff of 5, not including the rude, stuck up bimbo behind the register, 15 minutes to make the sandwiches. When the second sandwich was finaly done, the bimbo behind the register laughs and says, ""oh, ha ha, didn't you order the 'american hero', I say 'Yes we did', She laughs and says ""he made the wrong one, do you want this one""? When I say no, the bimbo had the nerve to give me an attitude about it , sighed, rolled her eyes and sent her genius co-worker back to make the correct sandwich. Pros: location Cons: The service! more

rude barmaids and over zealous anti-minority patrons 9/23/2007

After forgetting my food order a couple of times the waitress had the nerve to charge me for an extra pitcher of beer. I didn't want to make a deal of it and to confirm I asked my friend who agreed that she was wrong. So I made my claim and the waitress said ""I'll take it off but I know I'm not wrong and you did get an extra pitcher"" now that said I have gone to this hole for years only because it had a viable outdoor area so I respond ""so you are saying that I'm lying and trying to get an extra pitcher?"" and the idiot barmaid kept saying ""I know I'm not wrong"" and immediately this bimbo next to the bar starts ranting at me claiming ""I'm not a local"" and begins a non sensical tirade in front of the other patrons. I don't like pulling a race card in these situations but being this place is full of white yuppie ""hipsters"" I found it odd being the only latino in the place that these 2 ganged up on me along with the stupid bouncer adding in a nice overly blatant sarcastic tone ""have a nice night"". The people that go and work there need to get a grip on reality and realize how pathetic the so called ""community"" ideal is what makes the rest of the world hate americans and places like this. more

Great food great prices! 9/3/2007

This is probably the best juice bar--not over-priced and they'll make anything you want. I love that they will make more gourmet versions of an egg and cheese on a roll and not charge a bundle---forget American cheese, you can get gruyere plus many other varieties and have it on whole grain bread or other options. the coffee is decent for deli coffee and the sandwiches are enormous, fresh, and reasonably priced--highly recommended! Pros: gourmet alternatives to comfort food, reasonably priced Cons: often busy more

Bad attitude, disgusting toilet, surly service, not-so-great beer, too-cool-for-school patrons, etc.- gone downhill 8/31/2007

What a f___ing joke this place is. There is a ""waitress"" there (long, stringy, black hair, tats, piercings, sullen, surly looks) who typifies the place: bad attitude personified. GYC is a little, stinky slice of attitude-laden Williamsburg in our wonderful Carroll Gardens 'hood. The staff is beyond unfriendly- they are comically rude and uncaring, as if they've done you a favor to bring you a beer or one of their attrocious ""food"" offerings. The bathroom is- no joke- the most vile sh_thole toilet I have EVER had the misfortune to experience- think about that as you bite into your hotdog. Pros: near the subway Cons: still open more

Too Bad 5/24/2007

I like Bagels by the Park. the workers are nice & the Bagels are good. Too bad they are the same owners as the Smith & Union Cafe {where I've gotten sick from eating at least 3 times} and they also own the Gowanus Yatch Club - - where you can never use the restroom - if they even have one. Nice place for a quick fresh bagel sandwhich if you're doing your laundry or sitting in Carroll Park. Like I said, the workers are real nice. Too bad the owners can improve thier other 2 places! Pros: Opens Early - Good Coffee Cons: Too bad they don't serve their stuff at the GYC. more

Noisy inconsiderate clientele 5/15/2007

I used to patronize this establishment, however I don't partake any longer. Not only is the service slow but the clientele is noisy and inconsiderate of the neighborhood residents. Even on a weekday night there is hooting and loud screams coming from this bar. Too bad its patrons are so immature. more

Good ofr your everyday deli staples 11/29/2006

Generally really good bagels and sandwiches, also very good smoothies (although they're expensive). A couple of the staff members are a little unfriendly, though. I love the avocado chicken bagel sandwich. It's a pretty good value for the area. Aren't open very late, though, unfortunately. Pros: Nice neighborhood-y feel, good bagel sandwiches and smoothies Cons: Some items a little expensive, not open very late in the afternoons. more

The Unfortunate Decline 9/8/2006

I've loved going to the Yacht club for the past few summers, on a near weekly+ basis. The beer and dogs are cheap and plentiful, the service usually rushed and sporadic, but ultimately friendly...it's not like you go there to be doted on. Pros: the dogs keep coming like rounds at the bar... Cons: the effort involved more

This place is going downhill 8/17/2006

Used to love Gowanus Yacht Club - in the past, it had good atmosphere, affordable beer, friendly service. more

Smith Street - Friday night 3/24/2006

Hurry up and open for the summer!!!!! Great place to stop for a drink on the way home from the subway. Pros: location, value Cons: noisy more

Ahh Bagels by the Park. 11/6/2005

I have a love hate relationship with them. They are cheap and good but they make a lot of mistakes. The bagels are really good, especially when they just came out of the oven. The coffee is decent too, well when they remember to clean the machines. For awhile it had that tin taste to it. I love this place for cheap simple things like eggs and cheese on a bagel. Anything more complicated seems to come out wrong. I think most of the staffs English isnt that good and causes miscommunications and mistakes. They also make a mean tuna melt and some fine smoothies. Dont order the large iced coffee or smoothie unless you are a family of 4, their large is basically a popcorn bucket with a straw in it. Its more liquid then any one person should consume in a single day. Pros: cheap Cons: slow, confused more

Great spot spoiled by rude clientelle. 9/22/2005

There should be more of these outdoor beer gardens around, but there aren't. This one has the makings of perfection, with cheap drinks and snacks. All seems to be well, except for the fact that the place gets crowded with bitter wish-we-could-afford-to-live-in-LES Brooklyn newbies. The last two times I was there, I was scowled at by some tattooed and pierced kid who felt that I was taking up her/his space. And yesterday my friend stopped by with her baby (during the afternoon) and 2 people made comments to her that it was not an appropriate place for them. Get over it. Pros: location, drinks, snacks Cons: clientelle more

Shockingly Cheap Beers 9/11/2005

Very fun and relaxed. It feels like you are have left the city, until you hear the car horns. Too bad its getting cold. more

it used to be so great! 7/6/2004

i used to live around the corner from here when it first opened and before every hipster and their mother moved to the nrighborhood! argh! now, its impossible to get a seat and the place overflows with gals in flipflops and skirts and boys in trucker hats. however, the waiters are friendly, its a good, cheap staple and for the most part (once you get a seat) , its a good time. Pros: friendly service, cheap, cheap! Cons: , hipstered out more

run far away 6/5/2004

this place was great until it became over run with the reverse b&t crowd (manhattanites that go to brooklyn to go out). In the afternoons the place is laden with hipsters with faux-hawks, flip-flops and big anoying sunglasses. In the evenings, they're still there and just dumb-drunk. The ""food"" is, well lets face its... ""food"" in the same way ketchup is a vegatable. With so many great, old neighborhood places in Carroll Gardens, I find it remarkable that anyone who may entertain the notion that they are cool, would even begin to concider hanging out here. Pros: cheap beer, dirty water dogs Cons: , bathroom more
