I always thought Gene Juarez would be an amazing ""top dog"" place considering the prices. Not so. I went to get a bayalage (a french technique of highlighting) I told the woman I wanted honey/caramel tones. What did I get? Light brownish color that you can hardly see! I was so excited for I was expecting a dramatic difference and for everyone to go ""oh my gosh I love your hair!"" They didn't. No one said a word. In fact, I don't think anyone even noticed. Talk about a waste of 125 bucks. more

I have had several hair cuts at Gene Juarez and the only person that is allowed to touch my hair is Althea. She does a great job with curls and isn't afraid to listen to my suggestions. I've had some TERRIBLE haircuts from these folks in the past and some pretty good standard ones. The staff often treat folks that aren't dressed in the latest trends like crap. It is really unprofessional and rude! In sum, go at your own risk. The other services at Gene Juarez, however, are amazing. The Spa is so cozy and relaxing. I had the spray tan services and some sort of relaxation package before my wedding. I felt and LOOKED like a million dollars afterwards. Since I am so fair, I was afraid that the tan services would make me look orange. On the contrary, I looked sun kissed and warm; not what I had expected at all! Their make-up artist, Antoinette, does an amazing job using mineral makeup. My skin never looked more even and healthy in my life! She really knows how to do makeup that looks great for wedding photos but also looks natural for the wedding itself. I just had the Northwest Tan service done, and it was a wonderful experience. The woman at the front desk was warm and helpful, and I was taken to the body treatment area almost immediately. I was asked to change into a robe (very soft!) and sandals and lock all my things (clothes, purse, etc) in a garment bag attached to a hanger. You have to hook the key onto your robe, and I thought it was a pretty neat idea...I felt my belongings were safe. Pros: Parking, hours, treatments Cons: Can be expensive more

Since when was it acceptable to treat one's clients as if they were the hired help? I have patronized some of the finest salons and spas all across the world and have to say that those currently employed in the Tacoma Mall salon have not been appropriately trained to serve their clientele. I made an appointment for a haircut and foil and upon arrival 20 minutes prior was told, ""sit down...we'll let you know"" by a snotty overly made up gal at the desk. I don't know what it is about Gene Juarez, but their stylists only know how to do one haircut: a mullet! I've paid $50+ more times than I'd like to admit (because it's supposed to be the best salon in Seattle, after all) for terrible cuts. Save your money, so somewhere - anywhere - else! If you are looking for a talented and friendly esthetician, look no further! AUREA at the Tacoma Gene Juarez Spa is amazing! I've been going to her for the past couple of years and she has never once disappointed me! She does everything from a brow arch to facials! I have been going to this salon for several years. Once you find a stylist that ""gets"" you, it's a great experience. The staff is friendly and service oriented. I do agree that the front desk reception staff can be fairly condescending - not sure what that's about - maybe they just need different training. Overall, the best place I've found to get a good hair cut that really works for me. I arrived exactly on the minute to my appointment, was coming from half hour away and it was pouring rain outside, and the man at the counter asked condescendingly, ""What happened to YOU?"" He was extremely snotty and rude! If I hadn't been getting the haircut for a special occasion the following day, I would have turned around and left. My stylist didn't even come out until 10 minutes after I arrived. My hair stylist also had a very ""uppity"" attitude. The cut was decent, beside having to wait ten minutes for the stylist to leave and cut somebody else's hair in the middle of my cut. Definitely not worth the $55 plus tip and the rude attitudes! The moment you walk into the doors into the Spa you are greeted with a smile and a sence of tranquility. From the hints of lavender to the delectable coffee and teas you are feeled with warmth and relaxation.
