Masterful Architectural Gem, Frank Lloyd Wright's opus, best tour in buffalo 12/12/2008

I f you appreciate architecture you'll love touring this complex. If you love extreme home makeover you will love this tour of a restoration of ginormous scope. Frank Lloyd Wright prairie school fans will be hypnotized once they see the restored opus. Personal docent led tours are amazing- the passion of these volunteers and depth of knowledge is cool as the wing their way on your unscripted tour. Tell them your particular interests and you've got it slanted to your need. The hidden secret is the finest gift shop I've been to at any museum. I could christmas shop for the whole family, books, jewelry, apparel, local craftsman, even Frank Lloyd Wright furniture. (you can visit the shop inside the Carriage House for free anytime). I have gone on 3 tours in the last 5 years and I see new stuff everytime. You can now tour the Gardeners Cottage, The Barton House, The Martin Main House, the Conservatory and the Carriage House. Soon to be completed (winter 2008) Toshiko Mori designed visitors Center will offer views and Wright interpretation that makes Fallingwater look tame. Can you tell I was impressed? I've been to dozens of Architectural House Museums (mainly frank Lloyd Wright) nothing compares to Buffalo. Pros: Tours, gift shop Cons: parking on street, park at the zoo and walk a block. more

  • Overview
Buffalo's rich architectural heritage includes Victorian homes, Art Deco office buildings and marvels of modern design by H. H. Richardson, Louis Sullivan, and the great Frank Lloyd Wright.

    Facts
Local businessman, Darwin D. Martin, had his beautiful Parkside home designed and built by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1904. The Martin House is currently undergoing extensive restoration, and is open for tour by appointment only. Wright's economical woodwork, trademark sharp angles and use of stunning stained glass make the Martin house a must for Wright devotees and fans of modern architecture. The tree-lined Parkside neighborhood is located near the Buffalo Zoo and Delaware Park.
