(Asian Fusion): After all the years and hipster joints to go out of business, Five-Star is still the straight up shiz. I don't know how they've managed to do it year after year; but if you're looking for a place to take a first date or you just want to get wasted and see what happens...Five star rocks the 90's...in a good way. more

Love Me Some Five Star 1/16/2009

yes, i know the staff, manager and owner. but only because my wife and i go there very often and through the years have become friends. and i get hugs and wonderful greetings when i enter. so yes, i may be somewhat biased. but i wouldn't continue to go back if the food wasn't delicious first. that's for damn sure! the decor is beautiful and music is always eclectic. we typically chow down on the apps as they offer a nice variety with subtle twists on some Asian classics. our favs our the heat-seeker shrimp, steamed dumplings, calamari and crispy green beans. my wife loves the scallion pancakes. as far as entrees go, i would recommend the crispy beef or 5 star chicken. NOTE-good to order a couple entrees amongst some friends and share. Pros: food, music, decor, staff, prices Cons: if any parking--we walk though more

Great Food, Awful Service 10/19/2008

I'd have to say that the hipster atmosphere and delicious fusion of Asian dishes provides a nice setting for a fun group dinner. However, the service leaves much to be desired. At one point, I had to head to the bar to serve my own table drinks as our waitress had made herself unavailable and non-existent for much of the night. Then to my surprise, when we asked her to divide our bill amongst a few couples at the end of our evening, she handed us a calculator and asked if we could figure it our ourselves. I don't spend nearly $200 and expect to do math. The manager was less than helpful and after they charged us incorrectly 3 different times, they were neither apologetic nor willing to deduct from the excessive gratuity that was included in the bill and which I would have been more willing to contribute had the service actually been worth it. The experience left a really bad taste in my mouth and while I'd recommend in terms of cuisine I would ask that you be very very patient as the help needs a little help. Pros: Food is fantastic Cons: Service is the worst I've experienced in Raleigh more

Never disappoints 7/1/2008

I really do love this place. Great food and never really been disappointed. Only thing I dislike is the thai noodles will not satisfy your craving for pad thai. more

One of the best experiences in the triangle 6/22/2008

This is one resturant that I keep coming back to. Not only is their food excellent, original and imaginative, it's also consistent in it's food quality and service. The staff is friendly and make you feel very welcome. Pros: Food, price, service, consistancy Cons: it's not closer to where I live more

Best Chinese Food 2/26/2008

I have chance went to Raleigh to visit my friend, and she took me to The Five Star; more

Love the food but hate the chopsticks. 12/12/2007

This place has the best food I have ever had, better than the ""wonderful"" P.F. Changs. I usually have good service, but have had the experience with more than 6 people. The server won't come back because they know they will get their tip. However, they have huge portions. Whoever thinks they aren't big enough must be Jolly the Green Giant. But beware... if you aren't fluent with the chopsticks... they charge you $.75 to use a fork!!! And they don't even throw them away! They are steel, and dishwasher safe. Kind of a rip-off to me, even though it's only $.75. However, I will ""fork"" over the money, because it is a great place to eat!!! more

Great appetizers and service! 6/25/2007

I went with some friends the other night for dinner. The service was great and they have wonder appetizers. I will definitely be back soon! Pros: Great food, good service, nice atmosphere Cons: Parking issues more

Going back again 12/20/2006

Went to 5-Star about a week ago after not going for a couple of years, and really enjoyed it. Great food, good service, servers were friendly. I was checking out the site to send it to friends and saw the last two reviews and couldn't disagree more! The food we ordered was delish, and we're planning on going back with friends. Pros: Food, ambience, service great Cons: Parking and neighborhood are sketchy more

Avoid this restaurant as it has changed 8/23/2006

Guys, I was blown away by the last review and how poorly 5 star was rated until I went there with friends tonight. Not only had they completely revamped the menu, but they had hiked the prices, cut the portions in half, and the server we had was horrible. Because we had six people in our party, we had an automatic 20% tip. She must have realized this as she came out to take our order, bring our food, and give us our bill. She never came in between. We all ran out of drinks and not once did she come by. There were only four tables in the house with people at them, and two were served by someone else. It was a hard pill to swallow since this had once been a favorite place to dine on our menu. Needless to say, there were six of us, and she would not divide the bill ( restaurant policy ) and then had the audacity to tell us no one else had ever said anything about that. I don't know about you, but I just don't carry a lot of cash in that part of the neighborhood of downtown Raleigh. What a disappointment this place is. I wouldn't waste my time. Ownership is obviously out of touch with what once brought people to this establishment. We should have known when there were only 14 people dining, including us, that we would be disappointed. Don't make the same mistake we did. Stay away and go for a more consistent Chinese restaurant such as P.F. Changs, where you know the service and food will be good. Man, I am so bummed! :O( Pros: It looks nice on the inside Cons: The menu is limited and the service is very poor more

Average Take-Out Style Chinese Food 12/7/2005

In a very ratty area of Raleigh (though, you wouldn't know it from the snobby demeanor) sits Five Star. The food: slightly better than your average Chinese food. The service: so snobby, you'd think you were in New York (you're not). The value: you're looking down the barrel of a $30 tab for $10 worth of food. If you're looking to receive poor service, buffet quality Chinese food, and pompous servers decked out in the hippest outfits Target has to offer - your first stop: Five Star. Pros: Food Cons: Poor Value, Snobby, Bad Area more

AWESOME! 9/30/2005

I lived in Raleigh for over 10 years and Five Star has been my favorite restaurant for the past 5. I still drive 2 hours from the coast just to eat there. The portions are huge for the money and they are oh so tasty. My favorites are the pot stickers, the won ton soup and the Five Star General's chicken. In other reviews, I keep seeing names( i.e. Kung Pau, etc. do not exist on the menu at Five Star) for entrees that you would see at a typical Chinese restaurant where every menu is the same. If that is what you are expecting, then Five Star is not for you. You cannot compare Five Star to other Chinese menus. I've had most everything on the menu and it is all fabulous. The staff, atmosphere, service and quality are all A+. Pros: food, service, atmosphere Cons: parking more

GREAT Chinese 9/22/2005

I stepped through the door and I felt like I was in Sex in the City. The food was awesome, and the drinks were pretty good. The ambiance was also great. Nice little place. I will definitely be back. Pros: great food, sleek ambiance more

Good Stuff 8/25/2005

I went here for a date and it was really good. The food was great, shrimp appetizer was great, service was good. Great experience Pros: Ambiance, Food, Service Cons: Disposable Chop Stick more

Great parties on Friday nights even with a $5 cover - good music, great drinks, and a very nice-looking crowd. Pros: good dancing more

Check it out! 1/4/2004

Five Star has the best General Tso's chicken in town! The BBQ Pork is good too. The staff and management are always friendly. Mitch the bartender is AWESOME! If you're looking for a not-so-ordinary place to take that special someone for drinks and/or dinner, give Five Star a try... especially through the week when they are typically not as busy as the weekend. Pros: Food, Drinks, Atmosphere Cons: Parking more

Impressed! 9/4/2003

What is up with the negative reviews! I went to Five Star and the food was great (love the heat seeker shrimp), the service excellent and the price quite reasonable considering the quality and portion size. The atmosphere rocks, plus, they carry my favorite Riesling, the Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt. Pros: good food, great service, value Cons: parking more
