We heat our home with a custom-built masonry heater, sort of a cross between a stone fireplace and a woodstove. Last winter we had a fire inside our very tall chimney. We could see that it cracked the exterior chimney masonry, but we were unable to see up the chimney to determine the extent of the damage because the system has an S-shaped flue, and the builder neglected to install a base of chimney cleanout.
The folks at Environmental Chimney Service let us know right away that this was going to be a complicated job. From the top of a 65-ft crane they were able to lower a camera to identify areas of cracked flue tile, tear down and rebuild the upper part of the chimney, and install a heat-resistant liner. They also cut a hole through the side of the fireplace and installed a door for future inspections and cleanouts.
We seriously doubt that anyone else in our area could have done this work, or would even have dared to try. Environmental Chimney is a first-class professional outfit. They did extensive research beforehand, consulting with manufacturers and other industry experts. We were kept informed at every stage of the operation. All work was performed efficiently and neatly. We’re grateful for their expertise and willingness to help us out, and can’t recommend them highly enough.
