Edo-Ya Tokyo Cuisine

By far the best Japanese restaurant in Fresno is Edo-Ya. My family and I are at the sushi bar as often as possible, and whenever family visits from out of town we have dinner at one of their teppan tables at least once every trip. The sushi is made to order, no old rolls attracting flies like some other places, and the staff is friendly and attentive. more

Edo-Ya is one of my favorite places to eat in Fresno. As a matter of fact I will be there in about three hours from now. OK, so you may pay for refills on soda... it helps to keep the slummers out of the place. Now if we could only do something about the fools who like to chat through dinner on their cell phones. I've eaten at a lot of sushi places, and this was probably the worst, tied with Nkd. Fish. Pros: Got a whole side cup of eel sauce to drown out the nasty flavor of the roll Cons: Everything else more

The server asks me, ""What would you like to drink?"" and I asked, ""Do you have coke? or pepsi?"" She said, ""Pepsi."" I said, ""No thank you, hot tea please."" What did she bring me? Pepsi. When did I get my hot tea? AFTER the entire meal was cooked and served to all 8 guests, each person at our table was asked if they wanted refills (that they charge extra for) and I never even got a water to tide me over. Next I asked for sushi ""ala carte"" of my teppan aki (sp?) meal and it came out something totally wrong than what I asked for. When the server brought my check, I told her why I wasn't leaving her 20%, tip (but I did give her 15%)and explained the above and she looked at me with evil eyes like she never wanted to see me again. Guess what? She won't! more

The dining experience started with gruffy and rude reception. No greetings and no smiles. The host and hostess were probably overworked, undertrained and underpaid, but still excuses can go only so far. Business is too good as the surrounding restaurants (Italian, Thai, Armenian, Seafood, Indian) had only a tiny fraction of Edo-ya's business - on a Friday night. Edo-ya is like a black hole. Some fine dishes on the menu - paper wrapped Salmon or Halibut with Scallop Tsutsumiyaki. Lobster with Filet Mignon. New York Steak, Filet Mignon, etc. - all Japanese proportion, that is, tiny. Choice of sashimi, tempura, chicken wings with dinner. Salad and soup also included. Medium rare filet mignon came out medium. Halibut and Scallop were overcooked. Food was at best average, but worse: soup and appetizer dumped on table while salad was still being consumed. Cold tempura and warm fried chicken wings were certainly not appetizing. In addition, the chicken wings were dry - any hole in the wall Chinese place could have done it better. Dishes are cleared away with the obvious intent of hurrying the customers out. It is a Friday night, but enough is enough. One of the worse dining experiences anywhere. Finally, inspite of this review, the place is better than this - just pick a slow night, like Monday nights. The traditional Japanese dining is the best part of this restaurant, especially if you chance across old-world culture in the server, who could be an older Japanese lady or a newly arrived Japanese college student. Courteous, refined and attentive. BUT the host is one of the worst ever in any restaurant you can come across. Talked with his ""friends"" and ignore customers. No greeting. Rude mannerism. host and waiter were extremely rude - they rushed us through our meal saying they were on time constrictions, but there were at least 50 empty seats in the restaurant. waiter did not refill drinks all he did was stand behind our table pressuring the cook to get us out fast. This is the best sushi place in town. Good service and good lunch specials. For under ten dollars you can get a lunch boat and a drink. Plenti of food to fill you up. Pros: Good Value, Good Serivce, Tasty food more

I think Edo-ya Tokyo Cuisine is one of the best Japanese style restaurants in Fresno. They have really good sashimi, sushi, and teppin-yaki. Although the service needs to be improved, they have a full service bar, great ambience, and I especially like the traditional Japanese style dining room. The problem with the service is that after dinning at the restaurant several times, they are slow in getting the food to the table and occassionally mix up the orders. I think if they just train their staff better they can be the best Japanese cuisine restaurant in Fresno because it's a beautiful restaurant with great food they just have a less than average staff.
