Great seafood restaurant 4/17/2006

When a craving for seafood hits, there's no better place to go than Dover Strait. Specializing in the preparation and cooking of seafood, I've been assured that the various water-locked dishes they serve are among the best in the area. My brother swears by their escargot (a fancy French term for snail) and my mom claims she hasn't found anywhere that serves a better calamari. I can't verify this, as I can't eat seafood, but I've always found my mother and brother to be a good judge when it comes to food, so I take their word for it. However, while Dover Straits is primarily a seafood joint, there are "land foods" available on the menu. And these are delicious, as well. The cuts of red meat are top-notch, well-seasoned, and cooked to perfection. While it's not a fancy restaurant, per se, you do want to avoid heading out there for dinner in your most casual clothes. You don't need to dress up, for instance, but you may want to put on some khakis and a nice shirt. The prices are high, but are very reasonable for the quality of the food, in my opinion. The restaurant itself is visually pleasing to the eye and is very clean--a quality that I deem completely necessary for a sit-down restaurant. The servers for the most part are helpful and friendly. Service is fairly quick. Some nights, you may even be able to enjoy some live entertainment, as they sometimes bring in people to play for restaurant-goers. You can even dance to the live jams, if you wish, as there is a dance floor there, as well. more

  • The Scene
This suburban seafood oasis caters to quiet couples and multi-generational families, with comfortable dining booths and a welcoming bar. Laden with rigging and relics, the sedate nautical atmosphere perks up with dancing to a live musical combo on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights.

    The Food
The moderately priced menu of traditional seafood--along with several non-seafood selections--is headlined by higher-ticket items like Australian lobster tail and king crab legs. Appetizers include clam chowder soup and a captain's platter combo, a generous starter of standard oysters Rockefeller, clams oreganotta, crisp fried calamari and smoky barbecued ribs. The signature Dover sole amandine is firm-fleshed and succulent; flounder Wellington with shrimp, scallops and spinach in phyllo pastry with lobster sauce is a richer option.
