Weapons Grade, Muscle Building and Joint Mobility Cockfight 9/19/2008

I joined Crossfit in January of 2008. Crossfit is much more than a gym with simple membership requirements. More than buff enthusiasts, the instructors are nutritionalists that subscribe to a philosophy of living, a physical 'filosophia di vie' of sorts, which transcends simple exercise. Scott, Xi Xia, and Rochelle are compassionate individuals and true exemplars of the practices and ideologies which support what is commonly known as 'Crossfit'. In other words, beyond providing the basics, i.e., the simple guidance as to the proper form of exercise, they offered the personal attention and dietary suggestions that are critical for those (like myself) whom are impatient to see the results of hard work.\r \r Portland Crossfit is by no means easy. The daily workouts are intimidating at best. As a friend once said, ""If I'm not scared by the Work out Of the Day, it's not worth doing."" I resonate with this statement. I have now been an active member of the Portland Crossfit community for nine months, and I can say with absolute certainty that each day when I arrive for class I am honestly scared. The reward, however, is in the discovery that the goals are in fact, achievable. By completing the prescribed workouts, we empower ourselves to take steps toward, albeit inch by inch, the goal of becoming more fit individuals. My experiences at Portland Crossfit have afforded new friendships, a new sense of confidence in my body-image, and a total weight loss of 35 pounds. More importantly, I have maintained a commitment to healthy eating habits; I have continued to be smoke-free; and I have reaped the unexpected rewards of imagining that I have a chiseled physique (psychological overconfidence and apparent narcissistic results may vary). Pros: The workouts should be illegal Cons: Not located near a zoo more

You will never go back to a regular gym again!!!!!! 8/22/2008

I have been going to Crossfit since December 2007 and I still look forward to going everytime because I never know what is in store - that to me is the what puts it head and shoulders above a regular workout routine - you can never get bored and you leave there with such a rewarding feeling when you do something you really never thought you could possilby do!!!! I would encourage anyone to go give it a try no matter what fitness level you are at. Pros: everything!!!!! Cons: there should be locations in every town!!! more

Hands down, best resource to help you live a healthy life. 8/8/2008

I've always been active in my life by doing sports. When it came to working out, I was always winging it. I was told weight lifting was always important, but I had no idea how to do it. Being a female, I thought weight lifting meant bulking up, so I tried not to do too much of it. I figured if I need some arm strength, I would do some curls. If I wanted to build quad strength, I would do leg presses on the machine. I'd do a couple reps of 8 sometimes or not, depending on how I was feeling. Then I'd get bored and not really know if what I was doing was really doing anything. When I found out about Crossfit, I thought,""This makes complete sense and sounds like a lot of fun."" The fact that they instruct you on HOW to do the Olympic lifts properly and what certain excerises do for your body, is so informative. I understand now how each exercise you do effectively helps you. Everything has a purpose and it just makes sense. Crossfit gives you a guaranteed work out every time. I have better body control and when I'm playing Ultimate Frisbee I feel more confident on the field with what my body is capable of doing whether it's sprinting, jumping or laying out for the disc. I feel like I've accomplished so much in the year that I've been going. For all those women out there who think they could never do a pull up, think again and join Crossfit Portland!\r \r Pros: personal attention, diverse workouts, supportive community more

The best fitness program, period. 8/7/2008

My experience at CrossFit Portland since I joined in January 2008 has been life changing. Before then I had spent years working out at typical gyms and frequently left feeling bored, tired and very frustrated. In the time I have been doing CrossFit I have noticed a significant reduction in body fat as well as monumental changes in my flexibility, strength and energy level! The WOD?s are competitive, challenging and different every time. The instructors are great and I leave every workout a little stronger, faster and more educated! I can't imagine my life without CrossFit. Pros: Knowledgeable instructors, great location, fun workouts, real world results Cons: None! more

CFPDX is HOT! 8/5/2008

Crossfit Portland has helped me to go from ""That's impossible"" to ""I just did it!?!"" I've been working out with a trainer at CFPDX for 8 months, and the trainers have helped me to get past an old knee injury, balance the strength in my legs, regain my confidence, and learn to push myself harder than I ever could before. Everyone has been tremendously supportive and helpful, and I've learned a ton about strength training, cardio training, and nutrition. Crossfit has also helped me to become a better Ultimate Frisbee player, too- I'm faster, stronger, and have a higher vertical jump! \r In short- the people rock and the results are HOT! more

For those bored with the usual gym experience 8/3/2008

I've been working out at CFPDX for the last six months and have seen great results. I'm stronger now than what I was working out on my own at 24, I'm more flexible and I've met a ton of cool people. Everybody I've met at CFPDX has been extremely supportive, from the very beginner to the individuals who have been doing this for years, everybody wants to see you do your best. While the workouts are timed, it's not a competition against others, but a competition against yourself, each class you find yourself wanting to do better than the last! Pros: More open gym times, personal attention more

The Anti-gym 7/31/2008

If you're tired of ""going to the gym"", want an intense and dynamic workout in a 'compete against yourself and others' (fun) environment then crossfit portland is for you!\r \r As someone having worked extensively with a trainer on heavy-lifting in recent years (but burning out) and also having done the gym routine for many many years, hearing about crossfit was more than exciting. I wanted something in addition to running and power yoga to complete the craving I had for a kick-your-butt workout where you also really learned about efficient ways to move your body in life and sport. The gymnastic and oddball (at least at first) weighted workouts were also quite appealing to me. \r \r crossfit portland also very much quenched my thirst for the social and ""game day jitter"" vibe I wanted and that is obviously missing in solitary sport slike running or yoga as well as headphone-wearing gym workouts.\r \r As is probably obviously I lo-hove crossfit portland and the trainers there; I am a year strong and hoping to do it for many many more!! Pros: Trainers, class times & a totally different workout environment than you are used to! more

No Question this is the best in Portland 7/31/2008

For those familiar with Crossfit this is a place you need to try. For those that aren't I would suggest you do a little research online about Crossfit (as there is a lot of great info) to learn more about it and then come in for a workout to experience it first hand. I've been working out at Crossfit Portland for just a few months and have already seen great results. What I like most about CF Portland is their wholistic approach to fitness (strength, joint mobility, agility, balance, and nutrition). The staff really know their stuff and are extremely helpful and friendly. Don't be intimidated by the sound of the workouts as they can be scaled to any fitness level. Whether working one on one with their great trainers or working out with groups, you won't be disappointed! Mark Vandehey. Pros: Great staff, great facility, convenient location, wholistic approach Cons: Haven't found one yet! more

Best Place To: Accomplish things you never thought possible! 7/31/2008

I can't say enough good things about Crossfit Portland, they wouldn't all fit in the 2000 character limit for my review! The trainers are awesome and supportive, the classes are great fun and SO motivational. Whether you've been working out your whole life or you are just starting, it doesn't matter, there is something for everyone. However, be warned: You WILL get hooked! Pros: Fantastic people, interesting and varied workouts, great new facility, muscle-ups and overhead squats! Cons: Highly addictive! more

Best workout in Portland 7/31/2008

The absolute best place to get fit in all of Portland! Strength, flexibility, power, conditioning, joint mobility --- you get it all every time you visit, and you almost never do the same workout twice. The trainers have a broad and deep knowledge of fitness science and methodology, and the workouts, in small group settings, will explode the shoes off your feet. Seriously couldn't recommend this place enough to anyone looking to either recover from injuries or get fit, get fast, and get strong. more

CrossFit Portland is FANTABULOUS!!!!!! I was doing crossfit workouts in my own gym before joining CFPDX. And that was alright, but it wasn't near the experience that I now have daily. For one, being with other crossfitters is GREAT! Everyone is so friendly and encouraging, and it's way more motivating to push yourself harder, than just working by yourself. I feel like I have gained so much knowledge in terms of exercise science and nutrition. I am healthier, stronger, FITTER, and loving every minute of it. Everyday is different, another workout, another challenge, and it's great! And CFPDX is a community! I feel like I'm hanging out with great friends and family while working out, which is why it's so supportive. With personal attention and support from your peers, you can't go wrong. Once you've gone CFPDX, there's no going back. Come get some! Pros: CFPDX! Cons: what downside? more
