I recently went to Cravze after having read all the positive reviews & I was very disappointed. First the room is tiny & not at all romantic, Nothing like the pictures in the webs...

Very Good Food.... 10/8/2008

The Crave is not cheap, but that's not why you came here with your date. You came here to get a little and sure enough... you will. The food is very good, but not spectacular, the wine prices are a little high, and the service is not up to the level of the menu or ambiance, but the setting is amazing. This may be one of the most romantic restaurants in all of NY so you will put up with the other failings because it sets the mood more

perfection for the palate 5/20/2008

Just tried Crave for the first time since I moved to the neighborhood and regret not going sooner. Great atmosphere with good music that still allowed me to have a conversation with my friends, who were very impressed. We tried a little bit of everything, which was the way to go. The brie tart was fantastic, we also had the shumai with wasabi, and the croquettes which melted in my mouth. I had the salmon, which had to be the most creative plate I've eaten in a while! It had a purple sweet potato and small sausages on the side, and the fish was cooked to perfection. My friends had the chicken and Ribeye, both beatiful plates. For dessert we were recommended the chocolate chili cake, and it was to die for! The waitress also explained to us about their tasting menus, and that will be a must for next time. Overall was a great experience and I was very happy with everything. We were treated to a course of small soups before our main courses, a touch that made the night all the more special and the service attentive. Go Crave! Pros: food you'll remember Cons: make a reservation more

NOT IMPRESSIVE 4/26/2008

I was so excited for crave. Our party of three consisted of huge foodies, both of the vegetarian and carnivorous variety. We ordered a variety of things. The food was not as creative as it claimed. Sides and apps were under-seasoned. It was just kind of boring. The wine list was decent. Space is cute, but I wouldn't crave Crave again. Though the service was friendly, it was inattentive, which is hard to swallow considering that we were only 3 of 5 people in the restaurant. \r \r \r Pros: cute neighborhood/space Cons: the food was disappointing. more

CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS WRONG AT CRAVE 3/31/2008

Just to set the scene, I am an experienced restaurant professional...this is my story of Saturday night during Brooklyn restaurant week...\r \r I reserved a table for 9 for the restaurant week menu, and the woman on the phone took my credit card info and said that if we didn't cancel within 24 hours, a ""small fee"" would be charged. Let it be known, that no other restaurant in the BoCoCa area does this (including Saul). A family emergency came up and I forgot to cancel, so 10 minutes after my seating time I got a call from Marco (co-owner) saying that he is charging my card the FULL PRICE of a restaurant week menu per person. That's about $200! I then spent 30 minutes on the phone with him, during which he was rude, argumentative, and unwilling to understand my apology or situation. I have NEVER EVER encountered such unrelenting stubbornness from a restaurant manager. He refused to believe that his wife mentioned a ""small fee"" would be charged, and felt that the ""full price"" was comporable to a ""small fee"". Again, I am still unable to understand why a restaurant owner (whose restaurant is rarely full) decided to be unrelenting with a potential return customer. DO NOT GO TO CRAVE!!! Cons: Customer Service more

Big Dissapointment 3/30/2008

I recently went to Cravze after having read all the positive reviews & I was very disappointed. First the room is tiny & not at all romantic, Nothing like the pictures in the website which make the room look very appealing. No linen & in fact it looked a little ""run down"" No bread was served, instead we were given greasy chips with a bland Chick Pea Paste . The service was the worse. I was seated than asked to change seats, because they had to use my table to combine with another table for a group of 4 people, I didn't mind this ,however, the waitress took awhile to come over & then when she came over & asked for our order, while I was ordering, another waitress came by & interrupted. My waitress turn around & began talking to the second waitress ignoring me, I had to repeat my order, not good.. Overall the food was okay not bad, but noting great, I was given dessert but not asked if I wanted coffee unti I was finishing my dessert. I don't know if the positive reviews are from the owners friends or has this restaurant just gone completely downhill? Not even close to the five star rating, no wonder Crave isn't listed in ZAGAT.. Pros: Food okay Cons: Service, Value, ambiance more

AHHH~~ CRAVE 3/24/2008

This review was meant to be written shortly after V-Day but I really wanted to say something sincerely. \r By the way Debbie and Mr. Lyn, thank you for the lovely meal and for the service. My soon to be fiance and I will never forget you guys and the restaurant.\r hmm.. now for the curious readers.\r For those who aren't so familiar with brooklyn area, do not worry cuz you will throughly enjoy the seceneries around the areas. Once near by the restaurant pay close attention to the street number otherwise you will easily pass by. Near by the corner street you will find the lovely cozy reastaurant that the size of a someone's large dining room. There were about 7-9 tables (not too sure...) quiet, comfort and well mannered staff warmly greeted us. It was pre-fixed meal for the V-Day and couldn't help noticed the plating and the taste were just fantastic.\r I HIGHLY RECOMMEND CRAVE FOR : IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A JUST ROMANTIC DINNER WITH SOMEONE SPECIAL TO JUST ENJOY EACH OTHERS COMPANIONSHIP AND DON'T WANT TO BE DISTRACTED BY CROWDS OR LOUD MUSIC.\r \r I feel there's more to it than my mere described but if my review isn't so convincing than take previous fellow dinners review as the ratings don't lie :)\r \r Enjoy. Pros: limited seatings Cons: limited seatings more

Treat your tastebuds to a delectable experience 1/21/2008

Chef-owners Debbie and her husband Marco lavish their well-honed culinary skills with a no-nonsense approach that focuses on flavors, combinations and presentation. This is not a place to visit to see and be seen, packed away as it is among the handsome Carrol Gadens brownstones. It's a destination that, as the Michelin Red Guide says to identify the best eateries, ""merits the voyage."" Unless you live in Carrol Gardens, of course. \r Imaginative dishes, individually prepared, focused on taste and disdainful of frou-frou ""pairings"" are the thing here. Debbie and Marco's gastro-experimentation works: Japanese black sweet potato with a reduction of apple sauce and slivers of Chinese sausage... a cloud-light combination of Brie, caramelized onions and feather-light pastry... sushi-grade tuna, seared on the outside and running from pink to burgundy at its core and deftly seasoned to tantalize the palate, not overwhelm it... wild salmon sweetened with oranges... \r Perhaps this is the secret of Crave's success: the food, beautifully presented, features an almost-perfect balance of seasonings --from the usual to the exotic via the unexpected. Go for great culinary accomplishments. Pros: Imaginative quality dishes, wines and beers. Warm service. more

LOVED IT! 1/2/2008

My boyfriend and I decided to try Craves and we loved it! When we first arrives, we were kind of taken back by the size of the restaurant, but once we sat down and began our dinner - the size just added to our LOVE of this restaurant. It is very small, so I would not recommend a group, but if you are looking for a place to connect with your love - Craves is the place. The service was wonderful and personable. The food was GREAT! We decided to try their the tasting menu and we did not regret our decision. We had seven courses in total - including dessert. All I can say is that every bite was a wonderful dance of flavors in my mouth. A different wine with every course - WONDERFUL! If you are a wine lover, their wine list is extensive. They will suggest the best wine to compliment every course. \r \r If you decided to try this restaurant, you will not be disappointed. Pros: Ambience, food and wine - perfect date place! Cons: had none more

Most charming and romantic spot in Brooklyn-- Tell everyone you know!!! 10/14/2007

I was out with my boyfriend in search of a cozy spot to sit and have a nice meal... It's intimate and really friendly. The servers had an explanation and fine understanding of all the food and wine that we asked about. The room seemed to ooze with relaxing elements of dark walls, soft pillows to lean against. All of this was great, but the food just sent us into a blissful state. The chefs, a husband and wife team were so sweet. They sent out lovely shots of spicy corn soup with a sweet pea foam. It was a such a treat on a cold evening to sample something on the menu that we didn't order. We had a four course tasting menu, and the food was cooked to perfection. It was complex and savory, every dish had a great balance and color to it.. and the presetation was just beautiful. We started with a new appetizer ""croquettas"" with apples, chorizo and spanish bleu cheese. The server we had was so sweet, she really took the time to explain the dish in great detail and why the wine was paired with it. After that it was on to a perfectly cooked Salmon dish with Japanese sweet potato, chinese sausage and edamame, finished with an apple wasabi sauce. I think the best part of the evening was finding out that this small but amazing place also caters. I jumped on it right there on the spot and now my sister has the best cater in town doing her wedding... I asked them about the breakdown of what they offer for catering and within a few days they set up a tasting for my sister and her fiance and now they have everything set up to move forward with their menu for their wedding. These chefs, Marco and Debbie get it. They are cool, really accomidating and insanely talented. \r To anyone who reads this... get in there before you can't. This place is on the move. Don't miss out. You've been warned. Pros: Amazing food and service Cons: Fills up quickly more

WARNING!! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY 10/7/2007

You may want to reconsider spending your time and money at Crave... After our previous visit s where we have waited forty five minutes for a turkey burger and a hamburger (With only one other couple in the restaurant), we really wanted it to work out with this cozy neighborhood destination so we went back for what would be the last time. This is a great restaurant if you feel like waiting one hour for your appetizer then an additional for forty-five minutes for the main course. Also, please be prepared for a $20 corking fee per bottle if you prefer not to purchase something from the higher priced wine list. The restaurant is not up to the neighborhood standard for fine dining. I would not recommend this establishment over Grocery or Po. The gastro chemistry is a nice touch but the foams are not adding to the light and contrasting flavor I was looking for in my dining experience. There are highlights that you will enjoy and do not take this review as a slam to the restaurant, but you should consider the neighborhood. I am an avid restaurant goer and really wanted this to be the hidden gem that I had heard it was, but this was just not the case. The food was attempting to be something that it was not. more

Incredible Food and Great, Personalized Service 6/15/2007

I highly recommend Crave, especially for a special occasion. My wife and I went there for our anniversary during a weekday evening. Although it is a bit out of the way in Carroll Gardens, it is well worth the trip. It is a small, very friendly atmosphere, and very good for an intimate dining experience. We received very individualized service from Marco, one of the owners and chefs. We ordered the 4 course tasting menu, which was definitely enough food and offers a good variety. The chef chose our food, but Marco made sure to ask us what kinds of foods we did not like. We started with 2 complimentary small portions of soup, wild mushroom and pumpkin chicken I think. Both were very tasty. We the saku tuna salad, which was incredible and probably the best thing we had during the meal. For an entre we had the ancho chili duck, which was succulent, and also the snapper, which was also good. The dessert was a combination of desserts from their menu, which again is great for getting a variety of favors. They even wrote Happy Anniversary on our dessert plate. The whole experience was very memorable. We definitely plan to go back, especially since they now have a $25 tasting menu. Pros: Excellent food, great service Cons: Price is probably more for a special occassion more

Stellar dining experience! 4/23/2007

I am actually hesitant to write this review about Crave, because I don't want too many people to know about this absolutely superb little gem of a restaurant....it'll be too hard to get a reservation next time we want to go!\r \r This is the first time I've posted a restaurant review, but I had to offer my public praise of this place. We went there for the first time on Friday, and took friends who were visiting from Dublin. We got the 7 course tasting menu. My, oh my. Each course dazzled us. We particularly loved the corn soup with the sweet pea foam and the wasabi shumai. Marco, the owner, who served us that evening, has a terrific sense of humor and superb knowledge of wine. \r \r Having lived here for 10 years, my husband and I know the NYC restaurant scene fairly well. And this restaurant surpasses all our prior favorites. We've eaten at Daniel a few times, and the food here was comparable, the wines wowed us even more, the prices were far more reasonable, and, best of all, Crave has an extremely relaxed and neighborly atmosphere with zero pretense.\r \r We can't wait to go back....again, and again, and again! Pros: relaxed atmsphere, inventive menu, friendly professional service more

great prix fixe, not mass produced like midtown 4/5/2007

Went for Dine in Brooklyn week, one of the best prix-fixe meals I've ever had. I stopped doing restaurant week b/c the food often tasted uninspired and mass produced, this was definitely not an issue at crave. Everything came out looking delicious and tasting that way too. The window to the kitchen is a fun touch and let's you see the no nonsense cooking going on. The wait staff was pleasant and did a wonderful job of explaining our choices. Lovely little date spot or for going out with friends for a casual evening. more

Disappointing food 3/24/2007

What happened? I was so excited to go to Crave - I had heard so many good things when they first opened. I finally went last night, and the food was disappointing. It is a cute place, and our server was fantastic, but the food was boring and often bland. I hate to write a bad review of what should be a great neighborhood joint. The salad was bland - no dressing, and the hearts of palm tasted like they just came out of a can. The shrimp & leek rolls contained no discernable shrimp. The best part of my vegetarian entree was the mashed sweet potatoes (the stuffed squash had no flavor). The sorbets for desert were great - because they were Ciao Bella. I went during Dine In Brooklyn, so maybe things weren't up to par? But that's backwards - things should be better during this week. I wish they'd go back to what they were doing when they first opened and there was a good buzz - but until/unless that happens, I won't be going back. more

great tasting menu 2/15/2007

The wonderful food and service made our anniversary dinner. Chef even threw in a free course to help us celebrate. We'll be coming back often. more

Just wonderful! 2/10/2007

We had the pleasure of reading about this restaurant on this site - and decided to give it a try. Despite being a small place, they were able to squeeze us in with barely any notice. We had the four course tasting menu with the wine pairing -- highly recommended. The food was unlike any we had tasted -- with jamaican and asian influences. The wines are afforable and beautifully paired with the courses. It is a husband/wife duo - the husband was running the floor when we went and he made sure that we taken care of throughout the evening. Needless to say, the service was wonderful. All in all, a great culinary experience! Pros: Food, Wine, Service more

Best Burger...EVER 12/21/2006

My fiancee and I are sitting in our dismantled apartment with boxes all around. Moving truck is coming at 9am. The place to have our final meal in Brooklyn was an easy choice. We each just ordered a burger from Crave. By far, the best burger we've ever had, and one of the things we will miss most about Brooklyn, and Carroll Gardens. Another of my favorites is the seared tuna sandwich. You really can't go wrong at this place. Enjoy it as much as we have. Pros: Best burgers Cons: We're moving out of town more

An Incredible Dining Experience 11/2/2006

My wife and I had our anniversary dinner here last night and could not have been more pleased. Everything was excellent, the ambience, the wine, the food which was almost too beautifully presented to actually eat. Marco, the co-owner with wife Debbie Lyn, was very informative and knowledgeable about the food and wines and even mentioned that they will prepare any dish around any allergies someone may have. Especially if you get the tasting menu they offer which you can have paired with wines as well. \r The corn soup with sweet pea foam could be the best soup I've ever tasted. My wife's duck was gorgeous topped with pink raspberry foam and my ribeye with truffle jus was delectable and perfectly cooked. The sandwiches and burgers looked incredible too and they offer an array of pastas and vegetarian dishes. \r We can't wait to get delivery, the menu is so extensive we want to try everything we can before they change it again for the spring/summer seasons. \r Oh, and the deserts are incredible, the parmesan ice cream was out of this world. All in all, delicious and very fresh food with a twist at very good prices. Pros: Incredible food that looks like art at great prices, off the beaten path more
