One word - AWESOME!!! I was in Baltimore visiting friends and wanted them to take me to a ""real maryland crabhouse"".... one with brown paper on the table and mallets to whack the crabs! The Crackpot was their pick! I am so glad they chose it. It was awesome!! We had the best crabs I have ever had and loved the old-school retro atmosphere. It really took you back and made you feel like you were in the real deal of crabhouses. As everyone knows, some of the best food is found by visiting the hidden gems which have been around forever... a true testament to their quality! By no means is this place fancy so don't expect it - it is a casual place to have a great time, eat awesome crabs, have some pitchers of beer, and enjoy summertime in Maryland! A few friends who are too ""lazy"" to ""whack the crabs"" as I say (LOL) had some crabcakes and burgers which were also unreal. The jumbo lump is a whole different world of what we get in Boston. The best tasting crabcakes I have ever tried... ever. You can't go wrong with The Crackpot! Just go in planning to relax and enjoy some delicious food:-) more

Family outing 2/21/2012

I was born in Loch Raven Village which surrounds the restaurant and remember my parents going to the Crackpot 30 years ago. I myself now frequent the bar area and occasionally bring my own children to the restaurant. I have been to the Crackpot recently and have tried the new all Jumbo Lump crabcakes which were delicious. I personaly have not tried the steamed crabs in quite sometime but have heard some pretty good reviews from the regular customers at the bar. I have had some great times here and I know my parents did as well so they must be doing something right. more

All around great spot 1/23/2012

I have been searching for a great seafood joint for a long time and finally found it! The Crack Pot (in Towson... dont be confused with the Bel Air one that closed down!) is my new favorite place to go for some dinner and drinks with the wife or a night out with friends. The atmosphere is exactly what you would picture in ""old school"" crab-house. Its pretty awesome! I have loved the crabcakes everytime I have gone, but noticed a new item recently - The Shrimp Cake. I was hesitant to try it, but the price was so good I thought i'd give it a try - boy, am I thankful I did... It was so good its my new favorite dinner item! Everyone should give it a try... its that good! If you are looking for a delicious crabcake or hard crabs - this is the place to go! It is a true Baltimore Crab House and you won't regret your visit. I haven't tried much else on the menu yet, but hope to if I can ever get away from the Crab Cakes and Shrimp Cakes. I have had the wings and a burger which were both the best I've had in a while. Trust me - this is a place you want to go to feel right at home with a great meal. I have found the staff including the owner to be some of the kindest people I know and always so welcoming. They recognize you and make a point to say hello. It's a place you don't want to miss. Last time I was in the whole Towson Universirty Mens Lacrosse team was there and having a great time... it was packed. Hopefully I can still get my spot at the bar since the word seems to be spreading! more

Good place--good food 1/5/2012

I became a semi-regular customer here shortly after I turned 21. (I am now in my mid-thirties). I have mostly been a bar customer and have eaten here countless times. I can honestly say that I don't believe I've ever had a bad meal here. A couple of my personal favorites are the prime rib (a great surprise for a place known for it's seafood), the crabcakes (including a couple of the specialty ones), and probably any of the stuffed fish selections. Appetizer-wise, the calamari and clams casino are probably right up there with the best I've ever had--and I try those just about anywhere I go. Most of the bartenders are great...I've developed some nice friendships with them and some of the regulars there. I've only eaten in the dining room upon occasion where I've been with a group out for some steamed crabs. I know crabs can be a crap-shoot, but I've always been pleased with the crabs I've gotten here. And I kind of dig the old-school look/feel of the dining room. Just a heads-up to anyone who bothers to read these reviews...I noticed when I was looking through these that about half of them (and all the bad ones, by the way) were for a restaurant in Bel Air that closed over 3 years ago! This place is in Towson! more

Crackpot is Owned by Racists 11/11/2011

I happened to be at the bar one night at the ""crackpot"" and over heard a conversation between the owner Neil and one of his patrons. We were watching a basketball game which happen to be taking place on an aircraft carrier, the very same aircraft carrier they threw Osama off of. Neil's friend says, as the president steps out on to the deck, ""I can think of someone else I'd throw off that ship in his ""War veteren"" hat. Then Neil says ""sniper"" and chuckles. His aged friend says, ""Yeah, somebody just shoot him"" They all laugh. Just didn't sit well with me, so I won't be ruturning again. more

I had to visit this ""RETRO"" Restaurant and crab house! 8/2/2011

From the moment we walked in the term ""retro"" was in full sight. Hugh mounted fish on the wall - my 11 year old was delighted - crabpots hanging over the tables, port holes, ships lanterns etc. Just like the crab houses my parents used to take me to. more

Hugh mounted fish on the wall - my 11 year old was delighted - crabpots hanging over the tables, port holes, ships lanterns etc. Just like the crab houses my parents used to take me to.\r \r The MD crabsoup and the cream of crab soups are the best! We tried some of their famous crabcakes - the regular and some of the specialty crabcakes. All got rave reviews, I just loved the blackened crabcake I got.\r \r It brought back great memories hearing the steamed crabs being wacked. We will certainly be back to try the steamed crabs & some of the other seafood that we saw being served.\r \r PS Our server told us that they have perfected a gluten free crabcake that will begin being served soon! more

YES!!!!! 7/28/2011

Just went back to the place after it had been sometime... AND it was exactly what I remembered which is delicious food and a great place to relax! I had the crabcake dinner which was awesome. Some of the best crabcakes I have had ever... and I have lived in MD for a long time. This is one of those places that decieves you from the outside, but when you get inside you know you've made the right choice. The best crab houses in MD are the ones that are hidden gems serving amazing food. If you are looking for a fantastic meal in/around Towson - this is the spot to try! Their hard crabs areequally delicious as the table next to us was raving about them while they were having a blast whacking them open. Fun all around:) The bar is huge if you want to have a drink before or after as well. Enjoy the Crackpot! more
